November 1st, this Saturday, is opening day of Pheasant hunting in Illinois! I can't wait! I get school off friday because we are considering it a "family vacation". Really the only bad thing is I live by the Ohio state line so its gonna be a four or five hour drive over there.

Starting off tomorrow morning, I'll be shooting some clay pigeons to shake off the rust. And then around noon start heading out. I wonder how many cars we will see on the side of the road this year (last year we literally saw at least 10 cars randomly pulled over on the side of the road). Then we will probaby just get to the motel, head over to my great uncles for a little while, hunt the next day and after that day of hunting go out to dinner with family.

Well enough of my babble. Just wanted to announce going hutning lol. What do you guys/girls like to hunt?

I tried deer once. But honestly water fowl and pheasants seem more interesting.

Honestly, if I took the screen off my window and sat there in the lazy boy I could bag two or three pheasants.

lol, yeah birds are a lot more interesting than deer, you don't have to wait half a day to get a chance at a shot and requires a lot less planning.

Luckily we got one of the best spots in the county to hunt too, its nick named "The Pondersoa" and for good reason, its always full to the brim with birds. One year (i wanst there) they walked one strip and everyone had shot their 3 bird limit (and this is like 10-15 people).

I wish I could go hunting, but as you know, I live in California.

Although, there IS a loophole in a law that says I can hunt whales, as long as it's from a moving vehicle on the beach.

Anyone know how much damage a .30-06 will do to a grey whale?

Deer hunter here...
Only a few more weeks...

Since I'm in Biology, I get to write it off as an educational field trip.
Friggin' pwns.

Anyways... We should make a hunting sound-off thread.

I used to shoot ducks during season in the Imperial Valley at the south end of California when I was young. We had access to a private club with ponds built for that purpose. Fun days.

I've tried elk and deer with various levels of frustration. Deer is far more plentiful, damn near like rabbits in their ability to breed. And damn fine eating. Get two a year and you'll never go without protein.

I hunt vermin. Rabbits, chipmunks, ground squirrels, rattlesnakes, and the occasional coyote. Targets of opportunity.

One day, I may bag myself a feral cow. Maybe. They're pretty skinny, I'd eat for a couple days, including soup. Not including soup, I'd starve.

Snow goose opens up tomorrow! Finally!

Edit: I got 5. Much better than I thought it would be with this weather.

Well i just got back. It was a crap shoot this season. So many things went wrong: it was too warm, too much standing corn left, didn't get the strips mowed in the ponderosa till day two and thats all on top of the fact that there was a low bird count this year. We got a total of six birds (thats over two days with nine people >.<), but i atleast got one! lol, It was fun none the less.

Listen, get this.

Some douchebag has been doing target practice all weekend.

On Saturday there was a whole group shooting off two different guns. I could hear them shouting too and one point I heard one of them say, "Hey there's Bambi!" and then after a shot there was obnoxious hooting and hollering.

On Sunday there was just a guy and a young kid firing off one gun.

Mind you these people are our neighbors. Although not on our street they're behind us.

Guess I'm lucky. All we ever get out here is the occasional faint "WHAM" of our neighbors' shotgun (couple dozen times in an hour, but that hour only comes every month or two). Of course, they live within 100 feet of the road and only own a couple acres, so I can't imagine what they're shooting at, and I can guarantee it's illegal. Goddamn cops and their 45-minute response time.

On a quieter note, my uncle who lives in upstate New York is offering a bowhunting trip with me next time i go up there. Granted, i need to get a licence first, but i think you can get it online... anyone know about this?

Yeah, you can usually get an out of state license through walmart, thats we do for hunting in Illinois. I think you can do it online, if not, just call up a walmart there or send your uncle your gun safety card.

And why aren't quotes working? question
