Dragon_Of_Islam actually it's haram if u invite a lot of people (not a lot i mean even few) and make party and make this birthday like a holyday and u know in islam the r just two hily days right? so it's ok if u thank Allah to let u live one more year in this life ^_^ but to invite people and make party?? i don't think so ^_^ besides...who is the first who did the birth day thing???? not islam of course even the valentine days, mothers day and more and more it's absolutely not islam ^_^ Rasulullah saw. once said: Inna ma a'malu bin niyat, (you guys can translate better). so, was it wrong if we want to share our happiness with other people, for being alive for another year? Our intention is not for 'show off' or something like that. Right? ^^

Birthdays are haram b/c Muhammad pbuh never celebrated his birthday or anyone else's. Muslims are to follow the example of Muhammad pbuh: if he pbuh didnt do it (in this case: birthdays) then the Muslims should not celebrate birthdays. Now if someone wants to give you a gift, just tell them give it to you after or way before your birthday. That's so that you will still be kind to them for thinking about you and you will not be compromising your religion. The same as if you were giving a gift to someone. Some might view it as unkind, think about it: why should people just give gifts only on birthdays and holidays. Its like: Oh, the only time you thought of me was on my birthday and not the other 365 days of the year. 3nodding

you don't have to give a gift on birthday, but it's not like giving on birthday is forbidden.
There's not a single ayat in Quran or any hadits that talk about it, so it came to ijtihad. in my country, some ulama said it haram, because the first one wasn't done by muslim, and there's a hadith: ''Whoever imitates a people is of them.'' [Ahmad & Abu Dawud]
But some ulama said that it's not haram, which said not everything that non-muslim did is haram for us to do, only those that related to pray, religion, and other ibadah. and birthday isn't related to religion. Furthermore if we celebrate it as a form to thank Allah for another year that He had given to us.

That includes if he did not do something that no how means we can't do it either unless if he prohibited us from doing it.
