I define a rifle as "a man-portable, non-mounted weapon, firing single projectiles from either a smoothbore or rifled barrel"
I wasn't aware there was a type of barrel that was neither smooth bore nor rifled.
Well, the Taurus Judge has light rifling. I think what he meant was to bring attention to the either/or instead of leaving it up to assumption, which many of us would have been wrong in making.

Personally, I'd agree up to the last bit. Rifles have rifled barrels. Anything else is a musket.

or a shotgun

Still saying it has either a smoothe bore or rifled is pretty pointless. Light rifling is still rifling. There aren't any barrels that are neither smooth nor rifled and there aren't any that are both.

EDIT: Also all of these fit the description but are not rifles

The light rifling was a joke. My point was, if he hadn't said 'rifled or smooth bore', we'd have assumed that he meant weapons with rifled bores only, when in fact he did not. It was more for clarification than anything else.

Perhaps some refinement is in order.

Ok now I understand. smile

Yeah some refinement would be a good idea.

Geez I used to think merriam-webster was a good source of definition.

Don't know if anyone's mentioned it yet, but what of the Barrett XM-109? Granted, I've got two different sources telling me that its packing either the 25x59 cartridge (a grenade round which I think is bullshit) or the 25x137 round which is what the M242 Bushmaster Chain Gun on a Bradley shoots. Which I think is more likely. However, when you look at things, the M82 is a 3MOA gun, which I think is unacceptable for a so-called 'sniper rifle'. The 109 is supposed to be pushing a larger projectile through a shorter barrel. Looking at the physics of everything, I'd be surprised if it got better than 8MOA.

Any input on that?
