How much would you be willing to pay for this very fine-quality SVD, good sir?

Not a penny more than $700 out the door.

Well, I'm not sure I'd trust a shotgun. Not that it isn't effective, I just don't like how long it takes to reload, nor do I like how bulky the shells are. M1 Garand? It's accurate, quick to reload, packs a punch, and can double as an effective melee weapon.

Problems- the ammunition's still bulky, you can actually screw up the reload in a panic, you don't need an especially accurate weapon, and it was balanced in such a way that buttstokes were more difficult to preform than many other guns.

That's not to say it isn't a magnificent gun; just that most of its flaws were solved simply by training the soldiers better.

While the shotgun shells are wider around, .30-06 is much longer. With proper training, reloading can be done extremely quickly. Hell, you don't even need a LOT of training, just one or two methods that you practice with snap caps in your spare time ot get the muscle memory up. There are a bunch of different methods based on how you are carrying the shells. Speed Strips? Pull 'em all out in the hand, and go down the line. Loose bag? You might actually be best off grabbing them one or two at a time. Bandoleer or cuffs? Two or three at a time in a "cigar" hold, one inbetween each finger, and load them that way.

I wouldn't call the Garand particularly quick to reload, because of HOW you have to reload it. Even the more skilled of the soldiers never tried to reload it from the shoulder, because it could, and WOULD, damage their thumb horribly. They always brought it down to their hip so they could reload with their dominant hand, so they could use it to hold the bolt back while they did it. And then they still had to be very quick to pull their thumb back before it bit it.
As well, "packs a punch" is subjective. Unless you stock a TON of softpoints or JHPs, it'll zip right through without causing much more damage than a .30 hole. As well, you should NOT use modern commercial ammunition in a stock Garand. And that's what you'll find the most of. It'll ******** the operating rod pretty bad. One or two rounds wont, but if it's all you're shooting it sure as hell will. They work at much higher pressure than it was designed to work for. You have to get an adjustable gas plug, which will have to be adjusted for the ideal bolt velocity for each different load to prevent damaging the oprod, or causing the bolt to not go back far enough to load another round.

On the other hand, modern shotguns can handle old and new shells without a problem as long as they are the size they are chambered for. Pump-actions can, anyway. Semi-automatic shotguns will not cycle with many of the older shells, and could possibly be gunked up pretty bad.
