"Mommy...Mommy! Wake up~" Lith'elen batted at her mother's nose, claws sheathed and a bright grin on her face. She'd seen something extraordinary! And all because she'd had to go REALLY bad in the middle of the day. And she HAD to show her mother! Maybe her mother would know what it was...after all, her mother had seen lots of things!
Hakuna grunted as she was roused from her sleep, blinking at her young daughter with sleepy eyes. "What is it, Ellie? What has you so excited?" Several seasons ago, she might have snapped at the cub for waking her so early...but another litter and time had given her patience. A great deal of it. The large lioness shifted so she was more alert-looking.
Ellie pointed outside the den's entrance, to where the sunlight was. "I saw this BIG round bright thing in the sky! And...and the sky is all light blue! Like Mvua's spots!" She darted to the light, squinting a bit as she approached it. Being born to the night made her a stranger to the bright light of day.
Hakuna was very awake now. And blinking. What he he-oh. Now Hakuna was a bit disgruntled. Why in the hell would one of her cubs be attracted to the daytime at all? She sighed and stood, trotting over. Though she did squint to shield her eyes, Hakuna was more used to daylight than her daughter. Perhaps it was just a passing curiosity. All cubs had such a phase... "That, Ellie, is the sun. And the sky at daytime." She snorted. "See how pale it is? Not a fit time for demons to be awake and about." She moved to shuffle her daughter back inside.
Ellie clumsily dodged her mother's attempts and laughed. "The sun is pretty! Like a star...only BIGGER!" She looked back to her mother happily. "Is the sun a star, Mommy? And why are pale colors not good for a demon?" She was curious...wanting to know why and how and what.
Hakuna sighed and shook her head. "Ellie. Come back into the den and I'll tell you. So much sun is bad for demons. We are creatures of the night, darkling." With that, she succeeded in scooting her daughter back into the shadows.
Ellie pouted and trotted further into the den after her mother's scooting. "But it was nice out there...warm. Like when we're all together sleeping!" She smiled again and weaved through Hakuna's front legs. "So will you tell me now Mommy?"
Hakuna nodded and pushed her daughter aside long enough for her to lay back down. "Yes, darkling...now I will tell you." She shifted a bit. "Pale colors are bad for demons because we are born of fire and earth...we are children of the night, of the dark. Is the earth pale? Is the night sky pale? No...they are dark. And fire is hot and burning...That is why any pale demons must prove themselves...prove there is a demon within them despite their fur."

Ellie flopped onto her mother's back, pressing one cheek against the Tirma'eth's neck. "I guess....that makes sense." Were there pale demons? Mvua certainly wasn't one...else she wouldn't be her mother's Na'artue. "So...is the sun a star?"
"Yes, the sun is the daystar. But it makes more light than we demons can bear." She chuckled. "Oh, we can certainly bear it for short times...but the sun's light is uncomfortable." Hakuna herself had never been fond of the day...it caused her too many problems.
Ellie nodded gravely. She'd have to remember that. She had rather liked the bright ball of light though...Oh well. "Hey Mommy...isn't part of my name 'star'?"
"Yes. Lith'elen means 'soot star'." The lioness purred, content back in her den with her cubs. "The soot for your fur, and the star for the yellow 'lights' on your fur." A simple name, perhaps...and not the fiercest...but Ellie was her cub. She'd grow into a fine demon like her elder half-siblings. "You're the second star I've had, you know. The first was your half-brother Nyota'angavu."
Ellie nodded. "Mmhmm! I met eldest half-brother Nyota!" She giggled. "He said 'Ellie' didn't sound demonic and others might tease me...And I told HIM that if anyone said so to my face, I'd give 'em scars to remember otherwise!" Despite the vicious meaning of her words, the sound of her voice and grin on her face was completely innocent.
"Well...that's good! Let no one push you around." Hakuna blinked and yawned, knowing she needed to sleep once more. "I will start teaching you how to fight tonight. But for now...sleep darkling. It is far too early for us to be up." She shifted to make herself more comfortable and lay her head on her front legs.
Ellie's grin faded to a pout again. "Okay..." She slid off her mother's back and instead curled up beside her. The cub purred and nuzzled Hakuna. "Sleep well, Mommy. May Sparda and Morifaer bless your dreams."
"You as well, my darkling star...you as well." It was good to be a mother again. She would have to speak with Verge soon...it was certainly time for her to step down as a Guard and step up as a Teacher.
