That's quite an interesting opinion. I never thought about it that way. In that same respect, I still find it upsetting that about half of the people that DO join the fandom use it as more of an excuse for outrageous fetishes and inhuman actions, such as ****ing their dolls, true bestiality (***ing their dog, cat, horse, gerbil (Yes, it happens)), and having an actual "RELATIONSHIP" with inanimate objects or with another animal. And then those that are obnoxious to everyone by growling, barking, sniffing, scratching, etc... people at random because they don't know how to control themselves, so they blame it on the fandom. Those are the biggest reasons why the fandom is frowned upon, really.
But, I agree that it's probably a good thing that it's not so popular (yet) because of all the more morons and crazy people that would join just to be part of the "in" crowd. I personally prefer being a minority and my own person. (And yet I joined the military... anyone else see the irony in this?)

you all have really really good opinions on the subject, actual. i think that they all are justified in their own right.
Shard of Ronin: call me nuts for loving Twilight (god knows i've heard it enough) but i adore the books, and have since the original first came out. now all the sudden there's a movie, and i hear it EVERYWHERE. that's what you're talking about. i like being a furry, but i chose it because it fits me, not for any other reason, popular or not. it would be terribly annoying to come on and see tons of people here talking and talking and having no clue what their talking about....there's just really no point in trying to inform all of them.
Ravendor: that's why everyone hates furries!!!! ugh! i was first introduced to this idea by my boyfriend, and now a few of my friends have adapted it. they do fit the essence of the fandom, but they're all so damn obnoxious. you still have to have respect for the people around you, and not just join a group as an excuse.
Felix: i know what you mean, too. i mean....i don't want to be part of the "in" crows, it's far overrated. but i'd like to not dirty looks and comments for being who i am, and looking and dressing how i want. everyone's different **shrug** the world needs to deal with that.
i'm sorry i just pretty much rehashed all of what you all said, but you basically explained every aspect of my opinion on the matter. ^_^

I remember talking about this with a friend the other day.
I understand what you are trying to say, but time and time again the problems you all bring up due to popularity and the influx of noobs has more to do with the original members. If a group goes down hill it is because the people are not willing to put their foot down as what is hurting the fandom or the group.
The real problem things are to loose interpretation of very basic fandom definitions because nobody can come to an original agreement, and the newbies come in and decide for themselves what the fandom is going to be about obvious to it's origins and intended uses.
It's not the fault of the newer members that the older ones or original ones do not lay down solid foundation and stand up and stamp out things that do not belong. So as much as I agree, yeah I would prefer for fur fandom to be unpopular meaning not mainstream....wishing thus is pointless. We already have an influx of newer members who are beginning to desecrate the fandom from within.
So it's better to accept that, and if you care enough speak out when it is necessary. It's what I do and I get somewhat unpopular for it in some places because I care about the fandom. I want it to be there in future. I have gained so much from it, and I don't want to see that go away because the original members refused to put their foot down and start actually policing what comes in, and laying down their own groundwork for what the fandom is and is not, if that makes sense.
Of course I realize that too is a pointless thing to want because too many furries now are locked up in this mindset that you most tolerate everyone and everything, and judge no one. Fighting it is fruitless. You get ostracized for asking perverts to keep their perversion where they belong. You get yelled at when a legitimate problem begins to creep up (such as Bestiality and feral drawn porn on FA, and Cub Art both of which have huge legal implications that could shut FA down for good, and have the mods arrested, ect). You dare point out that "Hey a fetish fat fur banner is no appropriate for (insert thing here) and the fandom decides "Oh you hate fate people).
It's rather irritating.

Sorry, but I have a lot or ranting to do... This isn't directed at any one person or group or ethnicity, etc., but I have to get this off my chest.
I was raised on Tolkien since I was a little girl, and so I know how annoying it is when people jump onto the band wagon. The movies were great and all, but they brought a lot of people who didn't know half of the real story. I loved anime and things like that since I was six years old -lord thank Miyazaki-. After I grew up on the stuff, I found that when people watch a few episodes of one anime and say that they're fans, it bugs me. I do agree with you on that point, it does ruin a lot. I watched Naruto for the first 13 episodes then dropped it when everyone watched (and spoiled)it.
It was the hundreds of socially challenged people who didn't really know anything about it --but still sported Naruto gear and clothing and accessories-- that made it socially rejected. The same thing with Bleach. I watched about 32 episodes then dropped it. The same with Twilight, but I really disliked the way it was written. The sentences were rather choppy and she barely used any good literary devises. The book was good for speed reading, but not for my kind of book style. (That's just my opinion, please don't kill me!)
It's the same thing for furs. When someone sees the fandom and thinks ,'Oh, they're different. I want to get attention by mimicking them', That's what really ruins it for the rest of us furs. It those who go parading around and making a fuss for attention that truly create such aversion.
I've been a fur for most of my life, but I'm the quiet laid back type. Yes, I did occasionally wear the kitty ear headband to school, and yes, I would meow, purr, and squeak around my friends, but it was never a publicly broadcasted message. (side-note: I don't really like yiffy porn or any of the odd fetishes... but a scratch behind the ears is always nice) If I'm not deliberately asking for attention (positive or negative) Then why can't I be left alone?
Feh, beliefs are complicated.

I fully understand this.
I've been a furry for 9 years, going on 10. If anything has degraded the fandom it is the amount of people who have come in with no appreciation for what the fandom is or why it began and use it as a place to act like a freak, or act like they are different and that evolved into a crusade for acceptance and tolerance which is tearing the fandom apart from within.
It gets to the point you get tired of these new people coming in telling you what the fandom is about and you've been it longer than they've been having sexual urges....it's like....what the hell?
The fandom? About Tolerance? Acceptance? I've been here (X amount of time) and never got that memo.
Letting the fandom become to accepted or too mainstream is going to flood the fandom with even more people willing to desecrate the fur fandom just because they temporarily want to feel like they fit in.
If this ever happens it will be a sad day for the furry fandom because we will lose everything that makes it what it is. We lose what makes the fandom so nice. See our stuff we have is self created creating a different kind of community. We are a community of artists and fans of the art who perpetuate the need of artists to make stuff.
It if goes main stream it will then become commercial and then become a fandom where we have stuff handed to us, sort of like the Anime Fandom. We are not supposed to be like the Anime fandom. That is now how we grew up, evolved, and came into being.
