I suppose it could be because of numerous reasons-some that you already mentioned.
Some people have a high power need which makes them want to be in control so if hurting someone gives them that they may do so. As those with an abusive background are more likely to do the same.

for some it's because they can (and need) to feel the power over the emotions of others (emotional bully's) and they act maliciuously because of it. you may have been used (i was) if you were at least you know about it and you can take the high ground (both intellctual and moral). all that really matters is that you have a good set of friends when push comes to shove

I'd agree with the points made.
I had a friend who had to move in with his girlfriend since he'd moved out of his home and didn't want to go back and he lost the place he had before. She made him so miserable I had to spend an hour talking to him one night convincing him not to kill himself.
