A while back I had this story in which a plane is used that's painted in a camouflage pattern--blue on bottom and tan on top--so it would look like sky from viewers on the ground and like ground for anyone above it. I thought this was a nifty, and original, idea. And then...

Yeah, it looks silly but I guess it works.

Also heard that the unpainted bright finish, I think the B24 bombers, were hard to spot in the air.

But once on the ground, hehe, you try to miss a big piece of chrome in the middle of a field.

I think i've seen this pattern on other planes before, but i cant pinpoint them right now...

Actually, now that i think about it, i got a model of an F-4 Phantom for a birthday, and couldnt decide what to paint it. so, first, i painted the whole thing with what little white acrylic i had, and it looked horrible. Then, i started to paint the top camo, but ran out of paint on that. But then i realized, "Hey, this crappy white paint job actually looks like clouds from the bottom, and the top still looks like camo! Cool!

The plane is still hanging by fishing wire in my room ^___^

It wasn't really effective till WWII. Before that the planes were too slow and couldn't fly high enough really.

The unpainted finish was to save weight, because the bombers were escorted anyway nobody gave a s**t about camouflage.

And yes, the blue underside with camo top has been pretty standard since WW2.

And the P51s were mostly unpainted.

I think most of it depended on the plain, how they were manufactured and the area they were being used in.
