So yeah, I'm looking into buying a new compass. My dad sat on and broke my old map compass, and I'm looking into replacing it with a lensatic. Problem is, I don't know where to start and what to look for. I don't need any fancy radium/tritium/nite-glo bullshit. Survivalism is not the main purpose of this. I need to aim antennae at a radio tower I can't see, and guesswork SUCKS. I don't think I should be paying more than $20, but I don't know. I bought one for $5 at Wal-mart and it won't give me a clear reading; I'm returning it next time I go there. Anyone know what kinds of things I should be looking for or avoiding?

Sportsmansguide has some milsurp compasses.

A bit more expensive than your Walmart s**t, but yah know, if these things are milspec, they're worth the price.

$15 for two? Smells like it was made in China.

Doesn't look like it's actually a lensatic compass though. There's no rear sight.

Who buys compasses in pairs, anyway? Seriously...

Tell me you honestly trust a compass that uses radiation to glow like that. I mean, seriously. I don't want hand cancer.

Tritium is used in many gun sites. Some very popular ones at that. The amount of radiation is negligible, unless you swallow it. As well, apparently the TYPE of radiation it has doesn't penetrate the skin, although it WILL target the organs if ingested.

The search was supposed to have a bunch. They had a couple cheap ones.

Tritium releases beta particles, that s**t can be stopped by skin yes.
Also, if it does have any biproduct of its decay it'll be kept inside the compass, assuming it's air/water tight.

Anyway, they use it in nightsights so I can't imagine how dangerous it could be. Especially if they're not mandated to put a 'Radioactive' warning on the gun or in the manual.

They used Radium in those, not Tritium.

My dad has tritium sights on his Glock, they're rather dim, even at night (though to be fair, they're as old as the gun, which is a first-gen Glock). That sonofabitch looks like it's got a goddamn green lightbulb inside it. Sorry, I just don't trust something with that much radiation coming from it, free electrons or otherwise.

@Uryu: it did have a bunch, that one just jumped out at me as being a terrible idea. xd
