As she moved her shoulder still felt a slight strain. Although she attributed to the last two failures, she held her head high, chest full of pride and hope. How many times would she have to seek out these duels, these tests of her strength, fire and truth to become a Firekin? She breathed deep and looked over the dunes, another standing before her. Not the female who's eyes she would not forget, no, a male who looked as regal and strong as any other. A true Firekin. She craned her neck backwars and roared out her challenge over the dunes, for a moment she waited and while the other had not moved, she had chosen her fate this day as the sun rose high over her head.

She moved quickly over the sands, carrying her weight and moving as fast as she could bring herself to without wasting too much precious energy. She would have a challenge in front of her now, not only had she failed twice before, a new opponent meant different moves, different strengths and weaknesses. Had she made a mistake?

Regradless she moved forward and within range, thrust herself towards him with a snarl and felt nothing on her paw, no connection, no flesh no fur, nothing. She felt a pain in her chest not from falling, but failing again.

Move: Hit

Kidondo; quiet, observant Kidondo who prided himself on using words over actions and not giving into his Firekin rage. Something had happened to him since they had opened their doors to rogues and brought forth the duels. It had awakened something in him. Something that had been rare before.

His fire.

He'd always had it, of course, as all Firekin did. It was with them at birth, small but bright and grew with them through time. Kidondo had felt the rage and fought in his youth but it was different from this. The battles of his past had been fought for life and death. These sparring matches. They were...fun. Yes, he'd admit it. He enjoyed them! They made him feel alive, made him stronger and he relished in every strike and miss.

So, the challenging roar brought a thrill to his heart and as his opponent thrust towards him he was on his paws and dancing away from her advances. His counter-attack was instantaneous. He leapt at her, intent on using his bulk to bowl her over.

She watched his eyes and his movement, his muscles were tight and made his movement fluid and strong. Flicking her tails he watched him, felt a guilt in the pit of her stomach for failing herself once again.

Rellik felt as if a boulder had fallen on her ribcage as she tried to catch a breath. She felt air beneath her and fell hard, coughing and the warmth of friction of sand on her pelt caught her anger aflame.

She grit her jaw and pushed herself up, watching him with one eye half closed, "I can't do it again," she coughed, taking a breath and the sting of sand in her flesh. "I've tried twice before, and I will not give up, ever, until I am home," she breathed. There was evidence in her pelt that scars ran deep in her flesh, and she would keep fighting no mater how many she kept.

Feeling off balance she tried to ground herself, and jumped forward at him again, he seemed keen to fighting, born into the fire and sand and she felt nothing under her grasp again.

She wouldn't fail again would she?

He dodged again, sensing that the female was not one hundred percent. She was being sloppy. He saw that determined look in her eye. Saw the fire there, blazing. She wanted this badly. Well, she'd have to prove herself first and in her condition he wasn't sure that she would.

"Twice before, you say?" He asked, biding his time for a moment to speak with her. It only seemed right seeing that she had been here before. "Then you must know, from fighting my kin, that you cannot hope to win a battle when your body is not up for it. I can see in your eyes that your fire burns brightly. But the spirit needs the body, too."

He came to a halt and looked at her. "I will not go easy on you, outsider."

The sun beat down on her, and there was thrumming in her ears from the last blow, she felt herself hit but not as hard as the first, and she clawed into the sand beneath her to keep herself from falling. Breathing heavily her eyes half lidded she watched him move, with every move he made, it seemed to entice him more as if she was purposely baiting him to do worse and more every time but she wasn't trying to, she was trying to win.

"I do not want you to go easy, I want to prove my worth with no exceptions, but I will not waste days waiting when all I have ever wanted is beyond this, here, now," she breathed, grinding her fangs, biting back her temper. "Would you wait long if what you wanted, what you dreamed of and knew was right was before you?" she questioned.

Moving herself she swore on her life, her eyes and heart that she wouldn't stop now, she couldn't. What would Iroh think? She had failed twice before and he had tended to her twice before, how many more failures could her heart take before it broke her?

Didn't it mean anything, her determination? She had failed already but was showing fire and loyalty, persistence, didn't that mean anything? Failure failure would bare hard on her head if she could not win, and she wouldn't give up now.

"I will never give up, ever."

Running forward Rellik felt hot and dizzy but paid no mind, she grit her teeth and dove forward at him, hitting the sand and she kicked her back legs out trying to topple him over from below. If she got him off center, it might help.

He smiled. "Until you learn patience, friend, you will find no victory in these lands. You have heart, yes, but you let it rule your actions. Fight with your head."

He stepped aside, not willing to start fighting again until he had at least tried to offer advice. And he would give it whether she wanted it or not, because right now she looked like she needed it. "I am Firekin but my head is cool. The temper doesn't take me, so I fight clear-headed. I understand what it is to have a dream, to want to leap in without a thought for what might happen. Believe me, I do. I waited my whole life to change the ways of the Firekin, the wait was hard but look at the results."

He waited, wondering how she would respond to that.

Rellik snarled as she felt herself losing ground, feeling dizzy and losing again. If she lost again, where would she go, would Iroh look at her like the failure she felt she was? She wouldn't give up until she couldn't move any further, she would drag herself away and back time after time if need be. Though she felt herself choking on saliva as she tried to breath deeply. She heard him speak and bit her tongue to not bite back.

Her back was aching and it hurt to turn her neck, but her eyes, if able, would be able to set fire to an entire savanna with the flames that embraced her body and blood. Did he think she knew not patience? "You think I know not patience? Patience, was when I sat and heard my family striped from my life, their screams, patience was when I could not move as I saw the winged beast of unknown come to me! I could not do anything then, and only one other was able to save my life. I did not move because I believed if I waited the thing would go away, but it only did because of the one who saved me. I thought it would go away on its own if I waited, but only from that action did it leave, and it took my family with it!" She bit back tears from her eyes, felt the anger in her heart from that day.

"One day, I will stand beside you as one of your own, and together we will fight and tend to the borders any that come here, and even now, as I wait beyond the borders I wait and watch for threats to announce if I must. Even if I am not here in body, in spirit I am, and I will protect this place with my life, all I want is to be a part of it from the inside, not the outskirts. Even if that thing comes here, I will gladly give my life to protect these lands from it rather than have history repeat itself."

Patience, she had been patient already,s he just wanted to be here, home.

"I won't stop fighting until I am embraced by the kin I consider family already."

There was no getting through to her then. Very well, he must show her the hard way. One could not fight with body and spirit separated. To be a warrior, one needed both to work in unison. In harmony. She was fighting through desperation, not skill. She needed to clear her head.

"Patience or cowardice, my friend?" This wasn't like him. Surely these words were not his own? But yes, they were, and cruel they might be, he had to find some way to get her to pull herself together. "Then if you will not listen, I have no choice. I only hope you take my words and put them to good use."

No more biding.

He went for her again, raising back a fore paw to strike at her, a snarl rumbling up from his chest like distant thunder.

Cowardice? Cowardice! Rellik snarled at him, feeling enraged and angered, she had been so small, a child and didn't know what to do, where to go, how to face that thing. She bit her lip so hard she tasted blood and as he raised his paw to her she felt a blow hard against her cheek and she swore she heard a crackle in her ears.

Rellik toppled onto the sand, her head hitting first and she felt dizzy and everything became bright. She didn't move for a moment, feeling the breath taken out from her stomach. Darkness threatened her vision, and she felt cold. Her muscles were on fire and she felt the warmth of blood on her shoulder again.

She heard screams in her head and closed her eyes, "No," she wouldn't stand for it. The screams grew louder and she heard crunching and tearing, "I won't," she pushed herself to stand. She felt tired, exhaustion creeping up on her eyes and mind but she wouldn't stop not yet.

"Even if I have to come back time and time again, I won't stop," nothing could make her stop. She snarled and ran forward at him, lunging at his side intending to use her weight to topple him over. If she couldn't beat him, she wanted to never forget this day.

He saw her erupt then, her anger focused into brute force. That was the way! Push pain aside, forget injuries! Okay, so she was fighting with more heart than head, but it was a start!

She bowled into him and he tipped off balance in the sand, lying there for a moment, dazed. The warm sand pressed against his side, absorbing his weight as he landed so that he hardly noticed the impact. And then he was rising up onto all fours, regarding her with a gentler face now.

"Enough. That's enough for today." He dipped his head. "You fought well for one whose body needs rest. If you will accept advise, rest for a while, put your training on hold - at least for a couple of days. I promise, you'll feel better for it." He smiled. "I look forward to the day when I can call you kin."

Rellik pushed herself to sit on her haunches and held her head down. Though she looked forward to the day he would call her kin as well, she felt betrayed by her own body and spirit. "Whenever that day may be," she spoke softly. She lifted herself up from the sand and felt ashamed, she looked to where the den on the outskirts lay for her, but knew Iroh might come looking soon, so she headed towards where another pool of water was, though a small trickle of blood left a trail behind her.

She looked back once to look at the ale again, know his pelt and eyes, she would search for him the next time. She offered a half smile and hid her pain of mind and body and brought herself away from where the sand was moved and pushed from their paws.

It wasn't over.

She wasn't done.
