Midevil Europe was a place where slavery, by definition, did not exist. Serfs worked the mansions and other servants worked within the manors and castles but actual slavery existed no longer. Right? Wrong. Slavery most certainly did exist even though it was passed off as the hiring of servants or obtaining new serfs. Some slaves were treated well compared to the serfs which sparked a lot of jealousy and anger between the two groups but other enslaved people were treated much, much worse which caused ire directed to the slaves' masters.
The slave market was located in the dirtiest parts of London and was always very active at night. Nobles from every country on the continent would come when they got the chance or if they were already in London for other business and purchase a new addition to their manor. “Slaves are nothing more than property.” was the general opinion. The monarchs always overlooked the slave market because they were active participants. It was an international affair that, at times, was the only thing tying the European nations to each other. Everyone knew about its existence but it was never talked about in public. Only behind closed doors would you hear the word “slave.”
