Today, Zarha was running away.

Well, she wasn’t really running away, though she hoped her parents got scared over her little stunt. She loved to push her family’s buttons. All she was doing was going to the lake all by herself. Since she went there all the time with her family she knew the way, wasn’t the least bit scared, not even a little. The lake was only about a ten minute walk from the den. Zarha knew she’d be safe.

As she approached the shores of the lake she marveled at all the grown-ups and older cubs relaxing about in the shade. With a great big smile Zarha pranced on her way to the shore, tail in the air and head held up high, strong and independent just like her mama and papa. She felt like a real grown-up going to the lake all by herself, even though it was only ten minutes away from home. Hopefully her parents wouldn’t find her too soon. She wanted to enjoy being on her own for a little while. Maybe she would even meet some other cubs she could play with.

Harb yawned lazily as he lifted his head from his front legs, blinking sleep from his emerald eyes. A soft smile crossed his muzzle as he looked about the den seeing his mother and father. They had their differences but both of them always tried to show their cubs love. He flicked an ear again looking to his siblings. Sweet little Neha always wanting to play, goofy Asfar who always had a joke and a smile, then there was Zar...wait.... Where was Zar?!

Harb leapt to his feet, his heart pounding. Where was Zar? Of all his sisters, Harb was the most protective of his dark sister. He loved them all but she held a special spot in his heart.

Taking several deep breaths to calm himself, the tan male padded from the den trying not to panic. It wasn't the future yet, she wasn't in danger. Shaking his head, Harb forced himself to think before dashing towards the lake. It was something he had heard her talking about. Please let her be safe, don't let her be hurt.

Musical laughter tickled the air as Zarha romped through the shallows, splashing and scaring the fish. The grown-ups ignored her for the most part. A few banus may have whispered amongst themselves out of concern, but as under most unusual circumstances all assumed there must be an adult in control somewhere, probably just out of sight, so no one tried to supervise. Meanwhile Zarha was having the time of her life, unaware that her little brother was about to arrive and spoil the fun. She spotted a shiny fish and started to chase it through the shallows.

”ZAR!!!!” Came the angry bellow of an outraged male, the voice was too young to be a fully grown male. Harb’s green eyes were flashing fire as he catch sight of his more…mischievous sister. He didn’t worry about Neha or Afsar really, sure Afsar had a smart mouth of her but nothing like Zar. His dreams of Zar’s painful future kept him up at night, often waking him from a sound sleep shaking and to wake this morning from such a dream to find her gone…

“Dammit Zar! You –know- you are not suppose to leave without letting one of us know where you are going!” He growled, his tail lashing the air. He could feel the watchful eyes of the adults on the two of them and something inside him trembled in fear that this would reflect badly on their father but his anger wouldn’t let him hide.

“You are lucky I am the only one who knows you snuck out.” He knew what his sisters thought of him, that he was too serious and had no sense of humor. None of them knew his secret except for their parents and if Harb had his way, none of them would know. “Get out of the water! We have to get back before mom and dad wake up and find us gone.”

Zarha stumbled, splashing through the water as she came to a sudden stop. She gawked at Harb, eyes as wide as the sun. If he had only yelled she might have shrugged it off and gone back to playing. Harb kept talking, but Zarha could only stare, stuck on that one hurtful word, damn. He cursed at her. No one ever cursed at her before.

Her ears flattened as she noticed all the adults watching. Some of the older banus glared and whispered to each other. One of the pads was smirking. Their looks made her cheeks burn. She couldn’t stand it any longer. Head lowered, Zarha scowled into the earth. She trudged up the bank with muddy paws, leaving a trail of dripping water on her way to her brother. She refused to look at him.

The second the word had left his mouth, Harb regretted it. Sure he always fussed at his sisters, but it was never out of anger only out of concern. NEVER had he truly yelled at them in anger...until now. He laid his ears back, a look of regret filling his green eyes, but the hurtful words couldn't be unsaid.

"Why must you always push Zar? Why can't you just be good and do what you know you are suppose to?" He sighed softly, before transferring a glare at the smirking Pad. Didn't those stupid adults have better things to do than to stare at them?

She couldn’t believe Harb would talk to her like that! His concerned scolding only earned him a sneer. “And what am I supposed to do, sit around at home all day? The lake isn’t even that far from home Harb, they would have found me,” she hissed under her breath.

What angered her most was that Harb had to embarrass her in front of everyone. Mama would have never done that. This humiliation was worse than any punishment her parents could give, even if they grounded her for a whole month she would rather be stuck inside the den than see those older lionesses gossiping about her. Now everyone was going to think she was some big trouble maker. All she wanted was to stir up a little fun.

Had she at least acted sorry, it was likely he would have kept his mouth shut and simply taken her home, but no she had to mouth off. His ears went flat back against his skull as he growled at her, " You know better Zar. All you had to do was tell someone where you were going but no. You are a spoiled little brat that only thinks of herself. "

Snorting in disgust he shook his head, " I don't know why I even bother to try and save you from yourself. Why should any of us care how you end up since you don't seem to care yourself. I am tired of waking up scared for your future, do whatever the hell you want."

Turning back towards the den, her grumbled under his breath. There was no way to turn off his dreams, but at the moment he didn't really care. Of all his sisters only Neha seemed to love him, or care that he wanted to keep them safe.

Zarha didn’t understand why she should feel sorry. There wasn’t any harm done. Harb was the only one who let himself get upset. She still didn’t understand what his dreams meant or why he went on about them so much when he was trying to control her. Just because he dreamed something didn’t make it true.

She gawked at him as tears started to sting her eyes. “You don’t even know me, Harb! All you ever do is order me around, so why don’t you go find some other girl to yell at?!”

She turned around and ran from him. This time she would make her family come looking for her for real, she would make them more worried than ever, and when they finally found her she would tell them it was because Harb yelled and cursed at her. It was the cursing that caused her to run. Harb raised his voice to her before but this was different. She didn’t care about the pride’s rules. How could they even apply here? Harb was her brother, he was supposed to love her unconditionally. Her young mind couldn’t reconcile brotherly love with his angry words.

Harb growled/groaned knowing he would get in trouble if he really let Zarha run off on her own. "None of know you Zar because you won't let us!! Have you ever considered even ONCE I tell you things to try and help you?!"

Unlike before however, she didn't stop when he yelled after her and his anger quickly turned to worry. Anything could happen to her on her own, not all pads where nice and trustworthy. "ZAR WAIT!!"

Through her sobs and hard breathing she heard Harb’s little paws pounding after her. In that instant a terrible thought came to her, an idea so stomach turning she gulped air like a fish and threw herself into an all or nothing sprint. She thought of her brother tackling her to the ground and striking her with his claws the way the black Vizer did his females. Yet even as the wind blew back her little mane, she felt that she was wrong. That alone should have slowed her down, but the sting of the bad words was still with her and she ran ever faster to get away from him.

"Zar...no..." If a heart could break, then little Harb's certainly was. His sister, the sister he loved more than just about anyone, she feared him. He could smell it, see it in her eyes as she ran from him. The ache that spread through him caused him to stumble to a stop staring after her with haunted green eyes.

How...how could she even imagine he would harm her? Had he ever struck her? Hell he had never even wrestled with his sister out of fear that he -would- accidentally strike them. A soft whimper escaped the little tan male as he watched her disappear. She was afraid....and it was all his fault.
