It could be argued that the cave paintings in Lascaux, France are some of the earliest evidence... But it would be a very extreme stretch to say that it's furry, let alone that it is a religious image meant to have spirit animals aiding these hunter-gatherer societies.

I do recall some some paintings by the San in Africa that had distorted anthropromorphized humanish...things... But that's brought on by hallucinations and I don't know how old the paintings are or anything.

Still, it's a stretch to say it's furry anyway. As other have stated, it's impossible to tell.

Yeah, I wouldn't call anything created by ancient civilizations furry, but they are anthropomorphic animals and that is what furry is all about.

FYI, when I use the term furry I am talking about the fandom and its members, not the artwork and characters.

i think it started with fantasy literature, media and animation. As soon as people started making cartoons characters displayed anthro-animal hybrids, or humanistic animal characters. bugs bunny, mickey mouse, ect. a fandom started centered around anthro characters. but thats like the proto-furry fandom. not really the fandom as we know it now.

i think what really became what we know it now as had to have come about from the influx of anthro characters in Anime, and fantasy literature and animation starting in the late 70's, developing into almost a complete subculture into the mid and late nineties.

there is a fur wiki somewhere i forgot it's address but it has a furry fandom history article.

I think the first really anthro characters to come up in history have to be egyptian gods, and greek demigods. but that cant really be considered furry.
