Its not the raising of the alarm, it not being able to step into the shadows and blast these fools as they pass.

There's not really any "shadows" to step into... You're in the middle of a narrow hallway which has no pillars to hide behind, really. To effectively "hide", you'd have to hop over the rails into the courtyard to your right, which is brightly illuminated, and hope they fumble the perception check...

It isn't the fact you can't, it's the issue of being unable to maneuver out of the way.
