It was another lovely day in the pride’s lands. A bit on the warm side, but it wasn’t unbearably so, not for those who’d been born into the desert’s heat. Still, it was warm enough to make getting a drink seem a very a good idea. Which was why Anwar was headed down to the pool of water his mother had taken him to once or twice. Ordinarily he’d have been a bit nervous about going so very far from the den, since they were supposed to stay nearby, but he was only getting a drink.

Besides, it wasn’t like he’d get lost or something. He’d been here before, he knew the way back. And with all his brothers and sisters, no one would miss him anyway. He was hard to notice most of the time, his pelt helping him to blend in with the grass and shadows cast, and his habit of being still and quiet helped him to further escape detection. Which was precisely the best way to hear all the most interesting things…

With the occasional glance over his shoulder to see if he was being pursued, for whatever reason, the cub picked his way through the warm grass and down to the water that had been his goal all along. Another quick glance around, maybe something was making him a bit wary though he couldn’t say why, the olive furred cub leaned forward to lap up a nice cool drink. It might have felt nice to put his paws in the water, it was rather warm today, but if he got wet everyone would know he left. Anwar wasn’t positive he’d get into trouble for leaving… but he didn’t want to take chances.

User ImageMirage grinned at his father who watched him playing. He was happy it was a hot day because he got to go to the lake. The lake always seemed to have others about and Mirage always wanted to meet someone knew. He seemed oblivious to the strange looked given to him after he'd gotten over his initial shyness of strangers.

At first he had tried to get a drink from the lake, but he ended up tripping and falling right it. He came up spluttering, but after his panic wore off he laughed and jumped about in the water. He tried to get his father to join in, but he seemed content just to watch, so Mirage ran about in the water keeping to the shallow parts and making quite a bit of noise.

Mi'rage tripped yet and this time when he came up he simply shook the water off, no panic, he was okay. "This is great fun," he stated loudly.

He could have sworn he heard his father to tell him to calm down and he sighed, but did as he was told. He turned to head back to his father, but a cub caught his eye and he gave his father a pleading look. He could see his father smile, so he turned and headed off toward the other cub.

"Hey there," he called, though not to loudly. His father had, afterall, told him to calm down.

He hadn’t realized just how sandy and dry his throat felt until he felt the first mouthful of water trickling down it. It felt so good, cool and wet and soothing. Eagerly, the cub lapped up more, still wishing he could place even just his paws under the surface, kneading them into the soft dark mud he knew would be there. Mud felt good. He wasn’t sure why, but he always had the strangest urge to squish and play with the mud, feeling it between his toes and the squelchy way it sucked his paws under. It was… fascinating. Somehow.

Anwar realized abruptly that he had, in fact, been about to place a paw in the suddenly extremely incriminating water, and drew back hastily. His red eyes rose to see who had splashed over to him, whose greeting had broken him from his thoughts?

The cub frowned, spotting the stranger. Just a cub like him, sure, but… was he like him? His pelt was odd, a deep midnight color speckled with stars and even what looked like the moon on his haunches. It looked like an actual sky against the soft night-tinted brownish color of his legs. Strange… very strange. But it wasn’t the cub’s fur that was the very strangest, oh no.

No, it was the way the cub…didn’t look quite right. That wasn’t quite fair, he did look lionish. Feline. But… he was too…slender? Lion cubs like him and his brothers and even his sisters, they all had more…roundness? Something…blocky? Thicker? But this strange night-colored male…he looked… he looked like…

…like a something else. But what?

“…hello,” Anwar said after a moment, backing up a pace so as to make sure he didn’t get splashed and letting his forepaws bunch together where he stood. He knew doing that made him look nervous, or insecure. People where friendlier when someone seemed anxious. “My name’s Anwar. What’s yours?”

And what are you…?

It seemed to take the other cubs ages to answer his greeting and Mi'rage was beginning to feel very awkward under the cubs gaze. He did not enjoy being looked at this way, though he wasn't entirely certain he'd been looked at in the current manner before.

He almost sighed when the cub responded and smiled at the cub, his father's habit shining through. His father seemed to smile at everything, that wasn't unhappy or degrading and Mi'rage was much the same.

"My name is Mi'rage Metab. It's nice to meet you Anwar."

Mi'rage set in the water enjoying the cool feeling as the water soaked through his fur and rested against his skin. "The lake is very nice, but I have to say that I was getting bored running about by myself. Neither of my sisters joined us at the lake today."

Mi'rage looked over the lighter cub, slightly amused by his markings. Angular, but round and wholly unlike anything he'd seen before, though that wasn't saying much as he was rather young. In Mi'rage opinion he seemed plain with a slash of excitement, unlike himself whose pelt screamed adventure.

Well, at least he seemed friendly. Maybe he was just...younger than Anwar? He just... Anwar was used to his siblings, and this cub was so much... he was skinnier or something. Shaped differently. It wasn't his fur, Anwar may not have met many people but he'd done a lot of looking and listening and knew full well how much variation could come in colors.

No. It was just the...odd shape of him really. But both of them were still growing. Maybe Mirage was just going to be really tall or something, he'd heard someone say something about 'growing into' paws or ears or whatever.

"It's nice to meet you too," Anwar replied, reminded of his manners. "I only came down to get a drink..." he added uncertainly after a moment. He was a little nervous about going for a swim. If he came back soaking, then everyone would know he'd left.
