こんばわ!
Yeah, it's the evening when I wrote this, but whatever. On to some simple formality tips and notes.

です- Is actaully fairly formal. Good for when your talking to people older then you, adults, important people (Like on buisness trips and such), or your sensei.

If your talking to close friends or underclassmen (If your still in school) then you can generally kill of the です and simply end the sentence without it.
Also, you can ask questions casually using tone infliction
One good example of this is "How are you?" or (お)げんきですか。
If you add the お at the beggining, then your being pretty formal. Without the お you're still being pretty formal, though not as quite. Now, if you simply ask げんき, adding a slight tone infliction on the end, then your being pretty casual. You don't even need the か at the end, though no one would mind if you did...
