Sims2 Apartment life crashes?

The words I want are out of reach, but they've never been so loud...

I've had this game for awhile, played it with no problem, but now whenever i try to play I get the "Sims2 ApartentLife has encountered an error and needs to close" Thing.
I've tried running it directly, I've unistalled and reinstalled.
If I uninstall the Apartment Life EP, then I can still run the game with my old expansion packs, so the problem appears to only be with Apartment Life.
Could it be a problem with the disk? Or is it most likely the computer? Because I work at a videogame store and I can probably get my disk resurfaced for free....
I run on windows XP, btw.

Do you think it's the disk?

Do you use custom content like hacks or mods? If you do, did you update them when you installed Apartment Life? It could be a conflict that is causing the error.

I highly doubt it is the disk because the computer should only check the disk when you start the game to make sure you own a copy. It never checks again during gameplay.
I've taken the disk out once the game has started before and it carries on running.

It doesn't even start the game. I click teh "play" button and it crashes.

&All my custom content was deleted when I uninstalled it, so it shouldn't be causing conflict now.

Sounds more like an installation problem to me. If it can't check the disk it should give you the 'No disk is inserted in the drive. Please insert the game disk and try again" type error.
Or maybe it can find the disk but is haven't issues checking it so maybe cleaning the disk would be a good place to start.

Cleaned it 3 or 4 times. it can read it well enough to install it again, but it just won't play it.

the disk IS the only variable that had changed since I last played. I didn't install anthing new or change anything, so I think I'll get the disk resurfaced and hope that works.
