The metal bands I listen most to would be
Tool
Unexpect
Finntroll

Mostly Tool and Unexpect, since I ******** adore everything about Tools songs and Unexpect since well...it's freaking well done avant-garde extreme metal, one has to love the mesh of different style in their music.

Beside these I mostly go for various Folk Metal when I'm in the mood for metal.

......Folk metal?
I think my mind has just been blown.
The genres are so different I'm trying to figure out what that would even sound like.
I gotta listen to this.
(I've been listening to folk a lot lately so maybe I'll actually like folk metal.)

awaqu:
I'm not a fan of metal at all.
So I must ask, correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought the name of the show was Metalocalypse and the band itself was Dethklok.

Indeed.
Metal mixed with Folk music.
8]
It is epic.
Taking Folk music and making it all hardcore.
(not that Folk music isnt hardcore in its self, I listen to alot of plain folk music)
I actualy don't listen too all that much metal myself.
I go more for other rock genres,
but Tool, Unexpect and the various Folk Metal are something I really enjoy listening too.

Oh and if you find Folk Metal to sound a bit mind blowing, then check this out :
Electro, Black Metal, Gypsy Music Progressive Metal, Melodic Heavy Metal, medieval music, European Classical music, Opera, Jazz, Ambient, Noise, aaaand Circus Music.
All those genres (underlined or not) are used to describe Unexpect.
Seriously. It has freaking Gypsy Music Jazzy Circus-y feel too it.
c:
Those are the kind of Metal bands I like.
And Tool.
Since honestly, those guys have got it all down,
Ussualy described as the "Thinking-mans" Metal.
I never get over how beautiful and well thought-out their music is.

You are also totaly right about him having mixed up the show and the band.

ALthough he has edit'd his post now.

That sounds.. really.. epic.
I have to look at this now.

I also have to look up Unexpect know.
I must know what Gypsy Jazz-Circus music sounds like.

I'd never really explored the metal genre because any of the mainstream metal bands I've heard I haven't liked.
But I may have to check out some of these sub-genres, they sound really neat.
(I may have to give Tool a second chance. I listened to them once and didn't like them too much.)

Pah.
Post editing.
Now I just look weird pointing out a now nonexistant mistake.
Can I still point out that he spelled it wrong?
Well technically correct but the band spells it "Dethklok" rather than "Deathklok"

It is EPIC.
It's also called Viking Metal sometimes.
Just You Tube Folk Metal and a bunch of it should pop up, or wikipedia it too try and find a band that sounds promising or something,
they are actualy rather easy too find.

I reccomend giving Unexpect a try.
:]
Again, I don't really listen to Metal alot. And for a while was a bit negative towards it, since my only experience of it was of mainstream Metal which just sounded so...
Obvious somehow. A bit predictable in a strange way that somehow seemed not to fit into what it could achieve. Difficult to explain, anyway I just didnt really like it. It ussualy just left me with a deep sence of some dissapointment.

Then I started hanging around my Jesus-Shampoo Comercial friend, who aside from looking like Jesus is a Metal enthusiest.
And actualy knows what he's talking about,
pretty sure he's one of the few who actualy know pretty much every genre of Metal there is and can actualy tell them all apart.
Plus he's actualy a bit of a musical genious himself.
(He's in a Metal band himself, a funky Metal band that occasionaly has some jazzy/circusy undertones)
Aaaanyways. He started making me listen too some of the more interesting Metal genres, the more experimental ones and one day intratuced me too Unexpect.
At first I was a bit intrigued yet skeptical but after listening through one of their album through I pretty much fell for the band.
For it was awesome.

Chromatic Chimera

Now keep in minds that yes, there is screaming and such, but just focus on the delightfully chaotic instruments.
And the occasional break in the more metal sound as happens at about 01:04
And then how all the song changes into such pretty vocals at about 05:00 only to disolve into chaos yet again.

Desesrt Urbania
Same happens here at about 01:35, goes from screaming too this delightfull little circusy melody.
Meet Me at the Carrousel
I really like the little song line at about 00:26 in this one. And again around 02:44

Megalomaniac Trees
A very smooth sounding chapter begins somewhere aroun 04:44,
I quite like it for some reason.

I suppose one has too have a liking for chaos in their music to be really fond of them.
But hey,
You're a Dresden Dolls fan if I remember correctly so you might apreciate their phsyco-carnival thing if you give it a chance.
c;

As for Tool,
might have just been the song?
Or possibly you just don't like them.
Their are not everyone thing.

I just really like them, for :
the focus they but on the music, instead of the lyrics by always keeping the instrument slightly higher then the vocals.
the fact that despite the focus they put on instruments their lyrics are still always well thought out and rather moving,
The amount of emotion in every single song. It's not always something I can identafy with but it always leaves something none the less.
Their artwork. Sure it has no real connection too liking their music, but I still love the work of Adam Jones their guitarist puts in the Album art and videos (most often then not stop-motion)
The voice. Honestly the vocalist, Maynard Keenan has a truly beautiful and expressive voice. He's very good at bringing out the emotion behind the lyrics out and does not rely simply on screaming as so many of the mainstream metal bands do, but instead performs them with a sort of tender brutality.
(I'm not really managing to describe this well)

I also like how much thought they put into their music, for example
the arrangement in the lyrics of the song Lateralus if I remember correctly fits with the Fibonacci numbers.
My Jesus friend is more of an expert on the field of Tool,
the lucky b*****d owns every single thing they've ever puplished I think.
Even this uber difficult to find box set that should cost a small fortune but he managed to find it borderline cheap.
Lucky b*****d.
Aaaanway.
They just sort of mellow me out.
While Unexpect is something I rather groove to when I need to be hyped.
Tool is deffinetly for more concentrated mellow moods.

A few Tool links just in case you want to give it another try, and hell, even if you don't end up liking the music you can at least enjoy some intensely cool music videos:
Stinkfist

Schism

Prison Sex

Parabola

Ænema

Vicarious

Adam Jones the guitarist directed all these videos, the man is a freaking genious really (plus is I remember correctly he totaly did some work in a Nightmare on Elmstreet movie or two which is awesome)

The Pot
(not an official Video)

Jambi
(again if I am not mistaken, not offical but rather good video none the less)

Post editing suck
:c
And yes.
You can totaly point that out
since I'm pretty sure "Dethklok" is the correct spelling,
and when I say 'pretty sure' I actualy mean "Positive"

'Cough'
Long Post is Long.

...
...well, I've heard Disturbed, and Dethklok, and well...
I'm not sure of any other bands that I listen to are actually metal. Sorry.
I listen to a plethora of music, so more than likely I have tons of metal and don't even realize it...

Oh, yeah, almost forgot... Metallica. lol

At the moment, I'm obsessed with Nightwish, though I'm pretty sure it ain't metal. (Which usually means I'm either right by luck or wrong alltogether xp )

(Because quoting long-post would make my post really long)

I looked up "folk metal" on Youtube and Alestorm sounded interesting.
I'll have to listen to them more but I think I may like them.

Jesus-Shampoo Commercial friend looks like a metal kid.
He's got that look.
That's kind of how I feel about metal right now though.
Kind of negative towards it, it's predictable, etc.

I'm really liking Chromatic Chimera though.
I think it's wonderful when a band call pull off controlled chaos like that.
Because when it's done well it's so great.
Now I'm interested and I'm going to listen to the rest of the songs you posted by them xD
I like the girl's voice, she's got a pretty voice.
(Still not too fond of growly-screamy whatever but as long as they don't focus on it like it seems a lot of metal bands do then I think I can get over it.)

Yeah, I'm a Dresden Dolls fan.
The psycho-carnival thing is great.
I didn't think I'd find another band doing it as well for a loooong time.

Maybe.
I've only heard two or three songs by them and it didn't really strike my fancy.
Though I wasn't really listening if you get what I mean.
It was more background noise and it was just kind of "Eh, who is this? I don't think I like them."
Maybe if I listen and actually pay attention I may like them and catch the things you said.
(Though it'll probably take me a bit to get to them because now I need to listen to all the Unexpect songs you posted.)

Yeah!
I can still point it out! :D
(I'm just being nitpicky because I don't like it when people basically tell me "my music rules and if you don't like it you can suck my d**k." He may not have said it in those words but... I don't remember where I was going with that, it just annoyed me.)
PostPosted: Thu Mar 04, 2010 10:49 am
Jesus-Shampoo-Commercial friend
does look like a metal kid.
Which is why it's kinda funny that the first really clear menmory I have of him he was dressed in thight jeans, pink tiara and fairy wings
and a pink shirt that said "Sorry girls, I'm gay" on it.
Heh.

Glad your liking Chromatic Chimera so far
:]

Pshyco-carnical is the best thing ever.
Speaking of which:
Ever tried listening to Kaizers Orchestra?
They've got that Gypsy-carni-folk rock thing going on.
You might like it.

And dude, nitpick away! Go wild with it I say!
