Jatukaa was exhausted: mentally, physically, and emotionally. It still smarted that her own family had decided to kick her out. Well, they had done so in a loving manner, but still. They had sent her out on her own to find a place where she could fit in. And to get out of their fur. It wasn't her fault her entire family consisted of a bunch of sticks in the mud.
She'd been wandering for quite some time now, and admittedly, had learned a lot of things. She'd become quite good at hunting for one thing. Foraging, finding shelter, and tracking were also skills that she'd been able to hone on her travels. However, she was tired of wandering. She wanted to find a place where she could rest. A place for her to call home.
Kaa glanced around at the change of scenery warily. The landscape had been changing quite slowly, but it was still interesting to find herself surrounded by trees. There was an interesting scent in the air as well, very salty. How intriguing. She followed the smell through the trees, relying on her sense of smell in the fading darkness. Her eyesight had never been as strong as it should be, so she'd learned to rely on her other senses to compensate.
She finally made it to a break in the trees and peered out in awe. The sun was setting over the largest expanse of water she had ever seen in her life. Beneath her paws, the ground was made of sand. She'd never seen anything like this before in her entire life.
"Where am I?"

"These are the Kizingo'zaa pride lands," his deep voice was little more than a rumble as Zuri, who'd let his curiosity get the better of him and followed the strange lioness through the trees made himself known. "It is my home."
For a lion who belonged to a pride that did not have any special consideration for strength or for honour, Zuri was big an powerful and proud. He wasn't a man of many words and wasn't very good at the whole social thing, but he was fond of people in general. He had grown up surrounded by family and by friends in a peaceful environment and, while Zuri was rather shy and quiet, he was not unapproachable. It was fairer to say that he was apprehensive, but hardly cynical.
"You are welcome to stay for as long as you like," he informed her with a nod of his head. This was how Zuri worked. Short, sweet. To the point.
The male studied the female for a moment, sweeping his eyes over his frame with a clandestine blink. He decided that she was a pretty girl, and wanted suddenly to share something more tangible with her.
It was difficult for him to get to know people. Family was much easier. He had known his brothers and sisters for much of his life. They didn't expect anymore from him than they already knew he was prepared to give. Not that this stranger had asked for anything. She hadn't, of course, and he privately kicked himself for being so awkward.

Jatukaa had been very engrossed in the sight. The sound of a deep voice coming out of the trees was almost enough to make her jump out of her skin. She shrieked and whirled around, immediately striking a cautious pose. Her heartbeat pounded in her chest and she gazed around wildly in the fading light. She was lucky that the male who'd spoken had a rather light colored coat. He stuck right out in the trees.
She glared at the male as his words sunk in and she realized there was no threat. Kaa took a moment to catch her breath and slow her pounding heart. She'd really taken him by surprise. She really had to work on that; it made her very vulnerable to attack if she wasn't paying attention.
Finally, she caught her breath and was able to speak.
"You really startled me. I'm sorry about my reaction," she added, a bit sheepishly. "Really, I can stay here? That would be wonderful. I've been wandering for quite some time and I am really tired."
Kaa took a step closer to get a better look at the male and saw that he was giving her the same look over. She shrugged and took the opportunity to do the same. She had to admit that he was a rather good looking male, with very pleasing markings and coloring.
"I'm Jatukaa, and you are?"

The intensity of her reaction caught him off guard. Zuri's eyes narrowed and he tensed when she spun around, but there wasn't anything else in his posture or expression that gave away his surprise. He was not used to lions responding so defensively, but he was not ignorant. He knew that not all lions grew up in environments such as he had and, while he'd never admit it, it made his heart ache.
Wondering silently at her past, but not nosy enough to ask, Zuri nodded once again.
"That's what I told you," he said patiently, "You're permitted to stay here so long as you don't hurt any other lions. We do not condone physical violence here. You are, however, allowed to defend yourself."
He was alluding to her passionate reaction to his surprise, and didn't care if she knew it. Zuri could hardly blame her. He was good at moving silently. It was one of the few things he was arrogant about.
"You can call me Zuri," he told her softly, and inhaled a sharp breath of air. His chest puffed up as he did so. "It smells like rain."

Jatukaa could see that Zuri was thrown off by her reaction and she was a little irritated by that. After all, he had surprised her. He could have made his presence known in a less startling way. Well, it didn't really matter. If he lived in this mysterious place, it was likely that he wasn't aware of how mysterious he was as well.
There was something strange about the feeling of this place. Kaa couldn't quite explain what it was, but there was this strange feeling in the back of her mind. It was a little unnerving, but strangely comforting at the same time. How curious.
Shaking herself out of her thought, she returned to the situation at hand.
"Zuri, it's nice to meet you."
Rain? Well, that was a random statement. But now that he had mentioned it, she could smell it on the air as well. It was harder to catch, because of the salty, damp smell of all that water. Now that was another thing she was curious about.
"Hey, maybe you can answer something for me. I've never been in this area before and I've never seen so much water in one place. And what is that smell in the air? I don't understand it."

"Its the ocean," Zuri almost smiled at her, but still wasn't very sure what to do with himself. The formalities and subtleties of meeting strangers made him awkward and uncomfortable and, while he wasn't sure that he wanted to leave, Zuri didn't know if he wanted to stay either.
"The water is the ocean," he stepped away from the trees finally and, moving slowly and gently so as not to startle her, took a few steps closer to the beach. The sand felt familiar under his paws. "The smell is the ocean. The water isn't good to drink."
"It is beautiful, though, isn't it?" Look at him, continuing conversation without provocation! His brothers and sisters would have been proud. Even with the dark thunder clouds that rolled in the distance, there was a certain type of wonder and awe that the lands of the gypsies and the pirates inspired.

Jatukaa was a little thrown off by the way he was talking to her. It sounded as though he was explaining something to a cub, rather than another adult. Still, at least he was talking to her and explaining what the ocean was. She turned to gaze at the view with him. It truly was a lovely sight.
She didn't miss the fact that he stepped closer and she took another chance to gaze at him out of the corner of her eye.
The sound of nearby thunder startled her out of her observations and she cringed instinctively. She'd been terrified of storms as a cub, and though she did think they were beautiful, it still managed to frighten her every once in awhile.
You're not a cub anymore, she reminded herself.
"So, where do you think I could find some shelter for the night? I'm afraid I don't know the area very well, obviously, and don't want to take someone else's spot by accident."

His guard was down. The young hunter was certain that Jatukaa was no threat to him or to his people, and he was ready to accept her as one of the pride. This was how it worked with them. He had heard tales about prides who required lions to demonstrate their worth in a pride before they were welcomed as full-fledged members and, while a part of Zuri was intrigued by the idea of battle, he preferred the peaceful customs of his home lands.
It was what he knew.
Her next question made him turn white. Arranging a place for her to sleep was not something that he had expected from this little escapade into the unknown. He appreciated her consideration for the places that might already be occupied, but he was at a loss as to what to do.
There was silence for a heartbeat. Then he turned to her.
"You are allowed to sleep wherever you want," he informed her as casually as possible, "the pride is safe. You do not have to worry about anything."
Still, he could not shake the knowledge that she was a strange lady in unfamiliar territory. Zuri suspected she might feel more comfortable if she didn't have to figure out everything on her own. He did not feel like babysitting, however, and almost regretted introducing himself. Almost.
He sighed, glanced sideways at the storm, and then mumbled; "When storms come in, the pride moves into those caves." He pointed at the cliffs in the distance with his chin, "and we wait there for the tide to go down. You can stay with me tonight, if you wish, and be safe."
But it was just for tonight.

Jatukaa hid a smile. It was obvious that her question had not only caught him off guard, but it had also made him very uncomfortable. His manner and answer confirmed that. She loved the fact that the pride was safe enough for the members to sleep wherever they wished. She would have to see that to truly believe it.
The mention of caves made her sigh in relief. That was more like what she was used to. She'd taken shelter in rock formations and caves before, during her travels. Some shelter from the rain and the storm would be nice.
His next offer really took her by surprise, pleasant surprise. She'd been alone for quite some time and she missed having company. Also, she had to admit that he was a handsome lion and there was no guilt in enjoying company with a good looking male.
"That is very kind of you, I really appreciate it! Thank you," she said with a bright smile.

Oh, god. She actually wanted to stay with him. Zuri felt like he'd had the wind knocked out of him. It was not that he didn't like Jatukaa. With the exception of her originally defensive response to his approach, she seemed quite nice. It was simply that Zuri was used to being alone.
He had a blue-eyed twin and, while the other male was very dear to his heart, Zuri and the Fortune Teller were not on the most familiar of terms these days. Zuri didn't share enough of himself to be on familiar terms with anyone.
He may have asked her, but Jatukaa's ready acceptance of his invitation didn't fail to surprise him. His cave was perfectly roomy. There was more than enough space for both of them, but the point was that it belonged to only him. The thought of being in there, with this lady, who was a perfectly pretty stranger, alarmed him more than he would have liked to admit.
"Right," he had to clear his throat, and did his best to appear at ease as he started forward, "Follow me, then."

Jatukaa was not the most adept at reading others, but it was quite easy to tell that Zuri was very uncomfortable with the idea of her presence in his cave. She frowned, concerned. There were several possible reasons for his reticence. She simply had to think them through. She followed him and turned her thoughts to the problem
One, she was a stranger he had just met. Well, that was obvious and perfectly understandable. Two, he was shy. Well, that was no problem. Kaa was not shy and she could make up for the two of them. Three, there was something she had done wrong and he didn't want her to stay with him. Now . . . that was a painful thought. She quickly thought back over the entire conversation and couldn't think of anything she could have done wrong. Still, it was a likely reason.
"Um, you know, it's really nice that you are offering to let me stay with you, but you don't have to. After all, I am a stranger you just met. Perhaps I should find my own shelter if I am going to be staying here for awhile," said Kaa.
"I wouldn't want to intrude on your space and if I am staying for a little while, finding my own shelter will be essential. Do you think there might be any other caves that are open? I don't need a lot of space, just somewhere to sleep."

His personal space bubble, which had wrapped itself securely around his massive and furry frame at the original prospect of sharing his cave with this pretty stranger, stretched in relief when she spoke up. Zuri was grateful to her for being so perceptively honest, and it took a weight off his conscience to have her suggest it.
He wouldn't have felt very gentlemanly declaring that she find some way to survive on her own. It was good that she didn't mind being alone. He could admire that in a lady.
"We can probably find you someplace of your own pretty easily," this time, when Zuri smiled the corners of his eyes crinkled upwards in genuine appreciation. Privately, he made a mental note to show her a cave close to his own.
A part of Zuri was very much looking forward to seeing Kaa again. He hoped that it wouldn't be too long into the future.

Jakutaa nodded, a little disappointed but unsurprised by his answer. Well, at least he still offered to help her find a cave and she trusted that he would help her find a nice spot. Besides, if they both took shelter in the caves, it was likely she would have the chance to see him again. That thought brought a smile back to her muzzle.
Kaa shivered once, an odd feeling creeping down the back of her spine. That strange sensation was back. It was almost as if she was being watched or as if someone was trying to communicate with her, but she couldn't hear them. How incredibly strange.
She thought about asking Zuri, but shrugged off the idea. She wouldn't want him to think she was insane or something. That would not bode well for her future. So, she shrugged it off and followed him with a smile. There would be a chance for her to get to know him better at another time.
