She was preparing to walk down the mist-coated path to the pool where her loyal subjects scurried above the surface of the water. Her heart was pounding in her chest to think of what was to come. Finally she had come of age. She was no longer Izo'raina. She was LuciƩrnaga'reina. Future Queen of the Fireflies.
She braced herself, drew in a deep breath and began her descent, moving through the undergrowth on fully-grown paws, her head up and eyes alert.
And, as the trees parted, she saw there magical glow and the heart in her chest beat harder. How she loved them, her beautiful muses, so fragile and delicate and beautiful. All hers. Her pretty little subjects.
She paused then as the trees came to an end, glancing around the clearing. And then she called out to them, a soft call to catch their attention.
"Shining ones, your queen is here..."
And she moved on towards the waters edge where, on the moss, lay a crown made of vines and leaves.

Miminiwa had long since discovered his muse, it had actually happened the day he had met one of his first friend, Lamya. His memory of the actual event was, unfortunately, rather hazy but he did remember that he liked the dark colored female and that was the day his muse first decided to speak to him.
How long it took for him to get his muse name, well...that was a different story.
Now the sun, while always bright, warm and shining, was quite the mischievous muse. It didn't want to just tell it's chosen one what his true name was, no it wanted him to work for it, which had put the young adult into a bit of a sour mood.
Oh come on Jua, don't be such a poor sport," his muse chastised. You enjoyed the game and you know it.
Mimi sighed glancing up at his muse partially. He could never look at it directly, as much as he wanted to, "Yeah, I know but I can't help but tease you," he laughed shaking his head. He couldn't continue to play angry any longer, it was just too difficult!
He found himself grinning as he went in search of his dearest friend Izo. "Izo?" he called loudly.

Izo was an easy cat to find. She was almost always close to the pool, or somewhere in the vicinity. Thus, you only need to go nearby and call for her to hear you no problem. And Mimi knew this better than most.
She turned, startled momentarily from the wondrous moment about to occur, and felt her joy increase tenfold. Her best and most beautiful handsome friend! He would be here to see her crowned! And what about him? There was no crown here for him and he was a king of the fireflies! Oh no!
Would he be mad?
Nononono. He could be crowned another day. Tomorrow? Yes, tomorrow! No worries, then. None at all! They each needed their individual days to shine, right?
"Mimi!! Over here!" She paused to wait for him, smiling as perhaps a dozen fireflies came to land on her. What a perfect evening this would be!

Mimi always knew where to find Izo and while he assumed that it was because he knew her so well it was because of something much deeper. It was something that pulled at his heart strings, left his chest aching whenever he was without the pretty blue and white lioness. Whether or not he was aware of it the female had actually become a part of who he was.
When he was a child he was simply the other half so to speak, he was often around his pseudo-twin who, coincidentally was originally name Jua, and was rarely seen without him. More often than not people mixed them up. Now, as he had grown up, he hardly saw his brother and often spent his time around his new friend Izo. He had always been a bright and bubbly lion but once he met her, everything changed.
He was no longer just Miminiwa, he had become Mimi the firefly lion, the King of Fireflies and he couldn't imagine his life without her. If he understood what love really was he probably would have understood that this was how one felt when they fell in love.
When he heard her voice his face lit up brighter than it had ever been before. His grin was large, lips curling upward and his teeth showing, even his eyes held a twinkle that wasn't usually there. "Izoooo~" he called in a sing-songy tone scurrying to find her quickly.
He picked his way through the vegetation with easy following the path he had grown so accustomed to, and it showed. Soon he had emerged into the open not too far away from her and quickly bounded over to her. "You look happy," he commented.

Love. A tricky thing indeed, even more so when your grip on reality wasn't exactly a strong point. Mimi was not alone in his lack of understanding or realisation of it, for Izo (or Lucie as she was now) did not know anything of it either. All she knew was that when Miminiwa came to see her and joined in on fun adventures, life seemed more beautiful. More inviting. Life was good!
"Mimi!" She called again. And a few moments later he was there, bounding towards her. She mimicked the action and moved to greet him, buffeting her head up against him.
"I am happy, Mimi. Today is the day! I'm a fully grown adult now. Ready to take up my position of Queen. I'm to be crowned!" She nuzzled against him. "And you, too, tomorrow, if that's okay?" She glanced up at him with her golden eyes. "You can put the crown on me and then I can do the same for you? I have to say I was a bit worried the fireflies might not be able to manage it by themselves!" And she nuzzled him again, so overjoyed and caught up in the moment of him being there and her finally becoming a proper adult.

"Are you now?" Mimi teased pressing his nose against her cheek. "Well good, it's about time my queen, your subjects have been kept waiting long enough," he whispered in her ear. "Don't worry about me," he told her shaking his head. "Today is all about you," he mumbled pressing his maw into her neck.
He had come here in search of her and once she had told him that to day would be her day of crowning, well then he didn't want any of the attention to be focused upon him. No, today was all about her. Of course he had wished he had known before hand but he didn't mind, not now anyhow.
"Hahaha, you don't have to worry about anything with me around," he told her shaking his head. "So Queen Izo, now that you are of age, what shall I call you now?"

She nodded a little coyly. "I think they were getting a little impatient. But...I didn't want to let them down, and now I'm older, I'm much more prepared for the role. I love them so much, my shining darlings, the last thing I want to do is upset or hurt any of them." Her ears fell flat against her neck and she purred as he pressed his maw against her.
Oh she was so glad he was here.
And then she smiled up at him softly. "My new name is to be LuciƩrnaga'reina. A mouthful, I know, but it means Firefly Queen. I couldn't think of anything more suitable. The darlings have been in my life so long, made such an impact that...well, it seemed only right."
She touched her muzzle against his shoulder and turned to point a paw towards the water. "The crown waits over there. I think...I think I should give a speech, shouldn't I?"

"I doubt you could ever disappointment them, or anyone for that matter," he reassured her. He honestly believed his words because to him Izo could do no wrong. When she told him of her new name his grin dropped from his features as he looked at her in confusion. He hadn't even been able to catch most of her name.
"Er...Honestly Izo I didn't get any of that," he admitted with a sheepish smile, ears flattened against his skull. He chuckled, shaking his head, "You might have a new name but you'll always be my Izo," he stated resting his chin on top of her head as she pressed her muzzle against his shoulder.
"If you feel like it is the best thing to do then yes, you should," he agreed.

She purred, touched by his words and the smile on her face grew wider as he continued. "Well, since you are the most special lion I know, I suppose that'll be alright." She beamed up at him, admiring how pretty and handsome he was now. She adored the golden shine on his pelt and truly believed he was a firefly reincarnated into a lion's body (or something along those lines anyway). He shone just like them.
"I think I ought to say something." She gave him a light tug by the mane to encourage him to follow and then moved slowly up to the bank, pausing before the crown and before the mass of glowing insects.
She paused, looking thoughtful. And then, after a moment, she spoke again.
"I speak a lot, as most of you know. It's difficult to get me to be quiet, but...but this is different. Today I feel speechless because...because nothing can...can describe what I am feeling. So proud, so overjoyed, so honoured that you are my muses, that you chose me to be your queen."
Another pause and she cast a glance across at Mimi. "I promise you all that I will be true to myself and to you. I will protect you and listen to you and love you and...and do the best that I can to live up to the title."
Another pause.
"Thank you."

Mimi shook his head. "Now Izo, I'm nothing special and if I am it's because I have you in my life," he told her fully confident in his words. He hadn't changed much from when he was but a child but who he was now was shaped by knowing her.
He would have never believed it before but now he understood that one person really could change your life. Izo had made a complete difference even if he didn't really understand how. He didn't care either, all the could focus on was her.
As she tugged his mane he stepped after her with a goofy smile on his lips. He had never felt restricted but now he felt completely free just being in her presence. He listened intently as she gave her short and simple speech only stepping toward her.
"My queen, as your loyal subjects, we wish to gift you with a crown.

She blinked, drawing back a little to survey everything around her. The beauty of the fireflies, the glitter of the water, the comforting expression there on Mimi's face.
A crown.
Her heart thumped and she nodded very lightly. A moment later and she knelt on the grass, bowing her head so that her very special friend could gift it to her - on behalf of their people who would have struggled with the task themselves.

Mimi felt his heart skip a beat as he watched her in all her glory kneeling to accept the crown. He trotted across the grasses laughing softly as the fireflies danced around him. He reached the crown pausing as he looked at it before carefully picking it up in his jaw.
He turned his head slowly, being careful not to damage it as he moved back toward her slowly. The crown was woven from vines in the shape of a halo with a flower or two decorating it. He paused, standing before her, looking down at her and sighed contently. She looked so beautiful to him as he lowered the crown, placing it upon her head, and released it from his jaw.
"With the blessing of the fireflies, we crown you Queen."

She felt tears of joy in the corners of her eyes but desperately fought to hold them back. She was an adult now and grown-ups didn't cry! So, wait, why were the tears rolling down her face?
Ack!
She felt the weight of the crown on her head, heard Mimi speak the words and felt as if her heart might burst from the joy of it. And then she raised her head, cast her eyes about and lifted a paw to wipe away the tears.
"I'm so glad you were here to share this with me, Mimi..." She leaned forwards to press a kiss to his cheek. "And you're wrong, you are special, Mimi. There is many things in this world I could do without, but not you. I need your friendship and support. It means...so much."

He licked the tears from her cheeks and pulled her closer to him with one paw. "Shh, it's okay my queen," he comforted her nosing her behind the ears. "I'll always be here for you Izo," he whispered into her ear. "Nothing would ever stop me from being by your side on your most important days," he stated confidently
Alas, if the boy only knew just what he was going to get himself into in the near future and just what it would do to his relationship.
"I feel the same way," he admitted pulling back away from her just a bit. "You are my best friend Izo, I'd be lost without you."

And at that moment the world seemed perfect. She had her name. She had her muses. She had her best friend in the entire world. Life was good and she revelled in it, every moment.
But trouble loomed overhead, and though neither of them knew it, it would change their lives forever. Only time would tell whether it would end up for the better or the worse.
Even still, Izo was blissfully unaware of the future. The future wasn't important to her. What was, was here and now. Sharing this special moment with a dear, dear friend.
