Mzimu'motokali had been rather intensely pleased to discover this place...this pride...a fierce and proud set of lions that only accepted warriors, the intelligent, those with something to offer. He had quite a lot of confidence in his own, hard-won abilities, after all. But this female he was facing seemed just as intent as he to prove their mettle.
And so, he waited for a moment, bright crimson eyes gauging his opponent. He'd see what she'd do first...perhaps discover what her strategem was before he hurled himself head over heels into this little duel.

If one thing could be said of Iirte's strategy, it was that it was much like the sands they walked on. It shifted and altered from day to day, depending on the conditions that it was faced with. For example, with a lion as big as the one across from her, she'd be a fool to rush in head first and try to beat him with brute strength alone.
No, she may have been large for a Rogue, but this male... This male was on par with the natural born dwellers of these lands. But she could use that size, use his own power against him if she worked the land properly. She'd grown used to the shifting sands and he had not, but she knew better than to get cocky. Her last duel had proved to her that she also had a disadvantage. One in the form of a little Jackal pup rather happily playing with a bangle the size of her waist on the sidelines...
Iirte's eyes narrowed briefly. They couldn't drag this out. She hadn't been given a chance to feed Ista yet, and she had no doubt the pup was beginning to get hungry. And if this male wasn't going to make the first move, she would.
It wasn't a bold attack by any means. The lioness had rushed forward, feinted to the left and made a swipe at his paws. It wasn't intended to injure, but to trip him up.

Whilst 'Kali might have been a particularly large lion (towering over several of his siblings), he was rather agile for his size, having trained himself as a hunter and a warrior. When she came in, he watched her body language, the way that she moved, how she twisted for that feint, and but seconds from her strike at his feet, he pulled backwards abruptly, making a diagonal so he didn't wind up falling on his rump.
Mmm...so she'd started out trying to trip him, interesting, but it wasn't an actual attack, merely an attempt at an advantage. Rumbling his warning, he continued to wait...inclining his head but never taking his eyes off of Iirte. He definitely wasn't one to underestimate an opponent...for either gender or size. This was a pride of warriors, and he would prove himself as one of them.

As soon as she realized her first attack had failed, Iirte darted away, tail flicking and ears pressed back. This lion was certainly taking his time watching her, and she wasn't about to let that be his advantage. He was analyzing, and she knew it.
But she could analyze too. She hadn't joined these lions simply because they were physically strong. No, she'd joined because they were survivalists. You could fight as much as you want, but you'd be hard pressed to permanently damage any one of them...
This time, she waited. She kept her distance and her eyes flicked briefly towards Ista. The pup was still entertained and out of the way. Good.

Ah, so it was to be a waiting game. Well...'Kali had not always been a patient creature, and he had yearned for this moment ever since he had heard tales of this pride, and all that they stood for, their proud and intimidating legacy. He knew that it was his own, and he wished to be a part of it.
With that thought spurring him on, he bunched hindquarters in a flash of a second and propelled himself towards her. He had to use his weight to his advantage if he could, and so he slashed out with one massive paw, aiming for her shoulder and attempting to damage and knock her off-balance. If he could get that hit in, then he could follow it up with another...if he had it his way, the fight would be decided quickly.

The paw that met with her shoulder quickly sent Iirte tumbling onto the ground. The impact kicked up a good deal of sand, leaving her stunned for a brief moment before she got back to her paws and backpedaled. Another blow like that and she'd have to step down. She didn't need to be going on her next patrol bruised and battered from a duel.
For now, she kept her distance, regaining her bearings and once again double-checking to make sure Ista was still alright.

Watching as she took that tactical move, he couldn't help but observe that this particular female seemed distracted...perhaps an unlooked-for bonus in this fight, since it was so crucial to his acceptance. The victory was perhaps but a strategic attack away if he just chose the right one. As her gaze flickered, he seized the opening, charging forward, holding back not a whit of his immense strength.
He meant to pin the lioness this time, and if he could succeed in THAT, then this fight would be his. No one ousted him once he had a hold, 'Kali a particularly tenacious and stubborn fighter, especially when it came to close quarters.

Unfortunately for Kali, Iirte had never taken well to getting pinned. She attempted to dodge, but he'd caught her at that split second where it was too late. Soon enough, she was pinned beneath him. With a rather furious snarl, the lioness struck out, and wriggled in an attempt to free herself.

Fending off her attack with one large paw, he simply held the female there at bay, growling in her face to wordlessly tell her that he intended to win this struggle. He had her precisely where he wanted her now, and victory was coursing through his veins. All she needed to do now was to surrender, and this scuffle would ensure his acceptance. Not that he'd had a real doubt of it from the start, but overconfidence would have been a surefire way to equip a handicap in a duel such as this one.
Tail lashing from side to side, it wasn't hard to see satisfaction gleaming in the depths of crimson eyes. This had only furthered his conviction that this was the place he had longed for since birth, trial by combat deciding those fit for battle...fit to belong.

Iirte wasn't going to be outdone just yet. He'd made one mistake when he'd pinned her. He hadn't made sure her hind leg were sufficiently immobilized. With a low growl, she bunched her muscles and kicked him as hard as she was physically capable of right in the gut. Had she been using her claws, it likely would have been a finishing blow.
But this was not an attack meant to injure. It was meant to dislodge the other lion enough for her to slide away and return to her paws. She knew she'd lost, but she wasn't about to surrender where he could easily slice open her belly. Duel or not, she still had her pride.

As it was, he nearly had the wind knocked out of him. Grimacing, he was very grateful that she HADN'T used her claws. But then again, he and she both knew that he could have finished the fight moments ago. It was not a true gesture of aggression, she just wanted him off of her. That, he could do. Shaking himself vigorously, he stepped off of the lioness with a threatening rumble. "Good move..." He pointed out, deciding to be polite despite the tussle they'd just had.
They were to be fellow pride-members, after all, and he'd no intention of starting a feud right off. Duels were honorable things.

Iirte was on her feet as soon as Kali had stepped off of her, absently shaking the sand from her fur and quickly glancing around to make sure Ista was still safe. She was hard-pressed to hide the relief on her face at the sight of the pup, still happily playing with the bangle. After a moment, she nodded.
"Thank you. Next time you try to pin me, please make sure I can still see Ista. She's still fairly young, and I don't need her wandering off and getting lost in the desert," Iirte said lightly, sitting down and absently motioning the pup over to her.
It was obvious the duel was over. The male had beaten her fairly. She had no need to tell him this.

Ah, the pup. He'd noted the little creature at the start of things, but hadn't realized that her attachment to the wee female was as such. A cute babe, but not the sort of responsibility that 'Kali was particularly keen on taking at this point in his life...children someday, but not jackal pups. "I will see what I can do." He responded, manner friendly.
Inclining his head respectfully to his duelling partner, he then turned, squaring his shoulders and heading further off into the pride lands. He needed to see what else might be done, to further make him a part of this place...excitement mounted within his very core, and it was all the warrior could do not to break off into a grand lope. He had to at least savor his win...and his dignity, until he was out of Iirte's sight.
