Hello everyone. This thread is here for any new members, or even old members, that need help finding their way around the guild and (for those that are new to Gaia) a look into how to get the most out of the guild (posting, polling, etc.). My name is Jade, or if you'd prefer to use my real name, it's Alex. I am the Vice Captain of this guild as well as your guide to this welcome thread. I will be talking about the following topics:

1 The Grand Tour (Navigating the Guild)
2 Hammer and Chisel (Posting and Polling)
3 The Darkroot Hierarchy (Guild Ranking)
4 Dragon for your thoughts? (Dragons)
5 I'd like to thank... (Awards)
6 Random at its Best (The OOC)
7 You, in a Nutshell (Membership Forms)
8 It's Alive!!! (Character Creation)
9 Reporting to you, live. (The News Cast)

Each of these topics will be in a separate post following this one. If you're looking for something specific, just scroll down to it.

The Grand Tour

(Navigating the Guild)

There are tons of fun things for you to do around the guild, but if you don't know how to browse around, you won't be able to find or enjoy any of it. Let's start off by looking at the the tools you can use to move around. At the top of nearly every page in the guild, you'll find six buttons (seven if you're a crew+ member but that's a later topic). These buttons will take you to certain parts of the guild that you wish to look at. These buttons include 'Guild Home', 'View Forum', 'Guild Members', 'Report Guild', 'Recommend Guild', and 'Join Guild' / 'Quit Guild'. The following is an explanation of those buttons:

Guild Home

'Guild Home' will take you to the Guild's Homepage. This page shows our current Guild Banner at the top, following with a short explanation of our storyline for the RP. A copy of the guild's rules is here as well as another 'View Forum' button and a 'View Guild Announcements' button (which will take you to a list of our Guild-wide announcements, though it will often be empty). Lastly, there are some Guild stats and a spot to Donate gaia gold to the Guild (not required, but always appreciated).

View Forum

'View Forum' will take you to the guild's Main Forum, also known as "TDC Main Forum". The Main Forum is where you'll generally spend most of your guild time. It's where you'll find all of the threads pertaining to the RP. There are icons on each thread that explains what type of thread it is.

User Image Announcement: - This means that this particular thread is an announcement thread. An announcement thread is a way for the Crew+ to give members important news, so be sure to pay attention to these. They are always placed higher than sticky threads and normal threads.

User Image Sticky: - This means that this particular thread is a sticky thread. A sticky is a thread that is generally "more important" than a normal thread. Each sticky thread will always be higher up than a normal thread on the forum.

User Image - This means that this particular thread is a normal thread. A normal thread is a generic thread page in the forum. In our guild, normal threads in the main forum do not pertain to the RP officially. They can talk about the RP, but they are not essential to it. This makes them, for lack of a better phrase, "less important" than sticky threads or announcement threads, but they still matter to the guild... otherwise they wouldn't be there.

Normal threads can have different icons as well.
User Image - This icon means that the normal thread has less than 25 posts.
User Image - This icon means that the normal thread has 25 or more posts and is thus considered a 'popular' thread.
User Image - This icon means that the normal thread is locked and cannot be posted in by anyone other than a crew+ member. Announcements and Stickies can be locked as well, but the icon does not change.

If any icon is orange instead of white, it means that someone has made a new post in that thread while you've been logged on to gaia.
Examples: User Image User Image User Image User Image User Image

You may also see the word [ Poll ] next to a thread icon. This indicates that the particular thread has a poll that you can vote in for fun and gaia gold. The polls are located at the top of each thread. Just visit the first page of that thread to vote in its poll.

Each thread in the Main forum has its own explanation on the first page of the thread. You can visit a different page of a thread by clicking on a number below the thread name. That number will take you to that page. You can also change the page number while inside the thread. To learn more about a certain thread, simply visit it.

The Main forum is not the only forum in the guild. We have subforums as well. These subforums are located on the Main forum page though. They're at the top of the page. Currently we have 5 subforums in our guild: 'Crew Forum', 'Puzzles Forum', 'Contests/Games Forum', 'Pokémon: Reckoning', and 'Sprite Central'.

The Crew Forum is only available to the Crew+ members of the guild. We have private bathrooms and living quarters as well as a wall projector and mini fridge in the meeting room. You know you're jealous.

The Puzzles Forum has an announcement thread in it that explains what goes on in there. Here's a link to that thread.

The Contests/Games Forum is where you'll find threads pertaining to contests that the guild is holding or other random games to play for fun. Sometimes the contests will be announced in the Main Forum as well if they're a large scale contest. Each contest will have prizes and sometimes winning them will earn you an award for the Awards thread (which will be explained later). There will also be a later post in this guide pertaining to Contests.

The Pokémon: Reckoning Forum is where a side RP is being planned for the guild. Currently the project is on hold as we don't want it to interfere with the main RP. If you'd like to know more about the Pokémon: Reckoning Forum and its eventual release please PM me or ask your questions in the 'Questions and Suggestions' thread in the Main forum.

The Personnel Files Forum has an announcement thread in it that explains what to do in there. Here's a link to that thread.

Last thing for the Main Forum page... you are able to post a new topic/thread in the Main forum by clicking this button: User Image, but we ask that you request to do so from one of the Crew+ members of the guild. This way we can keep any Spam out of the guild. Any thread that is created by a member without the permission of a Crew+ member will likely be removed.

Guild Members

'Guild Members' will take you to a list of each member of our guild. The number on the far left, doesn't really have much purpose... the lower the number, the longer you've been in this guild. Each member's gaia name and picture will be displayed. Next is their level/rank in our guild. Captain, Vice Captain, Crew, or Member. (Guild Ranking will be explained later). After that, your donations to the guild are recorded here (again, donations are not required, but they are appreciated. Next is your total amount of posts in the guild. After that, we have the exact date and time of each member's latest/last post in the guild (be sure to attempt to keep this current). That's the last of the options on this page if you're a normal Member.

Report Guild

'Report Guild' is what you'd click on if you felt that this guild was doing something that goes against Gaia's Terms of Service and if the Crew+ were knowingly ignoring this act against those terms. If you feel that this guild is operating against those Terms of Service, please inform the Captain or myself in a PM as soon as possible and we will take care of this issue immediately.

Recommend Guild

By clicking this, a member can recommend this guild to be a featured guild on Gaia. Though it is highly unlikely, we like to dream big.

Join Guild / Quit Guild

'Join Guild' will appear in orange if you are not currently a member of our guild. It will send a join request to the Crew+. However, we ask that you do not attempt to join this way. To join the guild, please read our rules that are located on our Home Page as well as in the The Character Skeleton, Rules of the Road, and Profiles Sticky. These rules are your key to joining the guild.

'Quit Guild' will appear if you are already a member of our guild. You can click this button to no longer be a member of the guild. If you are having a problem within the guild and feel that you need to leave, please PM the Captain or myself and we can help you with this issue.

That sums up the guild tour, for more specific information on certain threads or topics, please continue reading this guide. All questions can be asked in the Questions and Suggestions thread or you may PM any Crew+ member.

Hammer and Chisel

(Posting and Polling)

Posting is why you're in this guild. You want to be a part of the guild's RP and take part in the creation of its storyline. In order to further the storyline at all, we have to make posts. In this section, I will be discussing how a member is able to post and edit the contents of their posts, color options in posts, the proper way of posting, and how to create a poll.

How to Post/Edit

Posting is very simple once you do it a few times. To post in a thread, simply click User Image. This button is located at the top left and bottom right of every page in a thread. Once you click it, you will be taken to a page in which you will become all too familiar with very soon. You'll see a large box in the center of it all. That box is where you type your post. At the top, you'll notice a ton of buttons. All of these buttons are used to alter your typing. If you want certain words to be in bold, simply highlight the word or section of words and click the ' B ' button. If you want certain words to be in italics, do the same, except click the ' i ' button. ' U ' is for underlining and ' S ' is for strikethroughs.

The 'Quote' button is used to quote other members your same post. This button can also be found on top of a post that has already been made (that button will take you to the same posting window, but the quote will already be included and you can type after it). It is much easier to quote in that way rather than attempting to quote inside a post by typing it yourself. But, if you're up to the challenge... simply hit the quote button and the word quote will appear in brackets. Type = after the word quote and then type the name of the member that you are quoting in parenthesis; Example:
You then type in whatever they said and end the quote with:
The end result will look something like this:

Jade Ralden
Posting is why you're in this guild. You want to be a part of the guild's RP and take part in the creation of its storyline.

But in coding, it looks like this:
Posting is why you're in this guild. You want to be a part of the guild's RP and take part in the creation of its storyline.
The 'Code' button is used to demonstrate the proper coding technique required to create something. Much like how I just showed you how to quote by using code boxes to show you the coding. Had I not used the code box, the coding would not appear and you would only have seen the quote itself without showing how it was done. Gaia is run in BBCoding. If you understand how it works, you're able to do many shortcuts. Example: Instead of highlighting the word Darkroot and clicking 'B' to make it bold, try typing in this:

Darkroot

The brackets are automatically typed in for you when you click the 'B' button, but sometimes it's easier to just type it in yourself. The first set of brackets is called an 'open' set, as it begins the effect. The last set of brackets is called a 'closed' set, as it ends the effect. The closed set will almost always be identical to the open set except for the addition of a backslash: ' / '. Back to the topic of the 'Code' button, it is used to demonstrate the BBCoding used without applying the coding.

The 'URL' button allows you to quickly make links in your post to other pages elsewhere. Example: Click this link to go to our Home Page. You simply click the 'URL' button and it will ask you for the address of the page you want the link to take you. You type in that page's address, then you click OK. It will then ask you what you would like to name the link. You name it and press OK. The coding for the link will then be displayed.

The 'IMG' button is used to display an image in your post. Click the button and it will ask for the image's url and then you click OK. The coding for the image will then be displayed.

'Imgleft', 'Imgright', and 'ImgMap' are rarely used as they're a little trickier and harder to work with. They'll do the same thing as the 'IMG' button except they'll place the image in different locations on the screen. Once you get the hang of posting regularly, try your hand on these image settings to see if you like to use them or not. An example of the use for 'Imgleft' and 'Imgright' is shown on all of these guides; the different colored Celtic corner borders located at the top left and bottom right of each post (purple on this particular post).

Below those buttons are three tabs: Color, Size, and Align. Color will alter the color of a selected word or group of words. Size will alter the size of the letters in a selected word or group of words. Align will alter the alignment of a word or group of words. Here is an example of the three used in coding so you can see how they are used as a shortcut:

Hello, these words are aligned to the right side of the screen, in size 12 font, and are in the color red.

Which results in:

Hello, these words are aligned to the right side of the screen, in size 12 font, and are in the color red.

Moving on, if you look to the left of the typing box, you'll see the Emoticons! If you don't know what these do, perhaps you don't belong online... Seriously though... click one and it will be coded into your post. But they'll always be sent to the end of the post.

Below the typing box you'll see a tiny check box that says 'Attach Signature'. If it has a check in it, your gaia signature will be displayed at the end of you post. This is allowed in the RP if you choose.

If you would like to see how your post is coming, just click User Image and a preview of what your post will look like will appear at the top of the screen. This way you can check your post before posting it for everyone to see.

When you're finished typing everything you want and would like people to see what you've made, click User Image and your post will be complete. You can then see it among the rest of the posts on the page.

Color Options
There are many fun things you can do to alter what you type. Color is the most popular thing to change. As I explained earlier, you can change the color by selecting a word or group of words and click on the color tab above the typing box and changing it to your desired color. Only thing is, it displays a limited amount of 14 possible colors. But, BBCoding allows for much more. If you don't see the color you want to change it to, don't worry... I can help. First things first, you need to learn how to change the color using BBCoding rather than the color tab. To make a word blue:

Word

Which results in:

Word

Now that you know the coding to change a color, you can learn about the hexadecimal color system. There is a six-digit hexadecimal representation of color in the form #RRGGBB, where RR, GG, and BB are the hexadecimal values for the red, green, and blue values of the color. Here's a link to a ton of hexadecimal colors. Find the color you want and copy the 6 digit number following the # sign. You can then use that 6 digit number as your color name in the coding. Example:

This is the color "palegreen1" (#9AFF9A).

But in coding it looks like this

This is the color "palegreen1" (#9AFF9A).

That Hexadecimal list is good to use when you're first starting out, but for more advanced abilities and unlimited color try this Color Theory Visualizer. The 6 digit numbers on the right will be your hexadecimal code. Just remember to add the # sign in the coding.

Another fun tool to use when coloring text is the Gradiant Text Generator. Just type in your text and play around with it. Select your colors and then it will give you the BBCoding for it, which you just copy and paste into your post. Though they can get rather long so be careful.
It can make things like this that look awesome! It also has a cool rainbow effect.

Proper Posting

Other than inside the RP itself, you are able to post in any way you want, as long as it's following our Rules and Gaia's TOS. Inside the RP, post should be at least 2 paragraphs (that's 10-12 sentences), legible (which means people need to actually be able to read it), somewhat grammatical (we aren't going to yell at you if you make a grammatical error on occasion, but please don't type like you never took an English class in your life), no run-on sentences (which are never ending sentences being constantly continued by commas... much like the sentence I am currently typing), and no chat speak (full sentences and proper capitalization... I don't want to see lower case ' i ' everywhere).

Creating a Poll

When you first create a thread, you are able to make a poll that others can vote in for fun. When you type up your post on your newly created thread, you can scroll down to the bottom and make your poll. You first type in your poll question where it says 'Poll question:', example: "What's your favorite color?". Next, you type in a possible response to your question where it says 'Add:', example: "Green". You then click the User Image button and another 'Add:' area will appear, allowing you to add another possible response to your question, example: "Blue". You can repeatedly push the add option button to add more possible responses in you poll, but the limit is 10 responses. Once you've finished choosing your responses, you need to choose the length of your poll, where it says 'Length:'. This is asking for a duration of time, specifically days, that you would like the poll to stay open for voting, before being closed. If you would like the poll to remain there permanently leave the number at '0'. When you submit your post, your poll will be above it at the top of the page and you (and everyone else) can now vote in it. You are able to remove the poll at any time by editing that first post of the thread, scrolling down to where it says 'Remove This Poll now!' and clicking that button.

If you're looking to create a poll, but don't have a thread of your own to make it in, feel free to create one in your Personnel File. You can simply edit your first post and scroll to the bottom to begin creating your poll.

The Darkroot Hierarchy

(Guild Ranking)

Every Guild has four ranks. Captain, Vice Captain, Crew, and Member. Each of these ranks has its own purpose in keeping the Guild running smoothly. Here's a short explanation of what each rank does. (My thanks to Yagami for his input)

Captain
The Captain is a sort of overseer, high up, but not lofty. He is the main storyline creator, responsible for keeping the flow of events properly intertwined behind the scenes. He delegates, but also knows when it's necessary for him to take charge of a situation. It's important for him to get to know his members on a personal level, so that issues can be easily resolved should they arise. He must be able to tackle a problem head on and find a resolve or compromise. He is certainly the authority figure, though usually issues are resolved before needing him to intervene. If a disagreement arises where the Crew, as well as the Vice Captain, are on opposing sides, the Captain's word is ultimately what goes. He should be among the first to welcome a new member (simply out of courtesy, to show he cares about the Guild and all it's members). Most importantly out of all of these, a role model for other members to follow.

Dragon for your Thoughts?

(Dragons)

Dragons are our Guild's form of currency. They can be used to purchase items from Cayden`s Caravan and Liar`s Dice as well as used to get hints for Puzzles/Go Problems. Every Dragon is issued by the Vice Captain and is recorded in the Dragons thread. It shows how many dragons each member currently has, along with the total amount of dragons earned for each member. The member with the highest total dragons earned is listed at the top of the thread, following with the runner up and so forth; its always good to have a friendly competition. They can be issued as a reward for completing a Puzzle/Go Problem, winning a contest, or going beyond what is asked of you.

A few of the possible things that you can do to go 'beyond what is asked of you':

- Displaying Selflessness (caring about others before yourself)
- Constant Participation in Guild Activities
- Going out of your way to Improve the Guild
- Recruiting New Members
- Posting Regularly

Here are the Dragons and their values:

It can be turned in for rare items or exchanged for 15 Dragons (does not count towards 'total dragons earned' only towards 'current dragons').

It can be turned in for rare items or exchanged for 20 Dragons (does not count towards 'total dragons earned' only towards 'current dragons').

These Rare Dragons can also be used to Gamble with in Liar's Dice, in which Cayden will give you exactly what you wager if you win.

As the Guild grows there will be more and more things to do with your Dragons, so make sure to try and earn as many as you can.

I'd like to thank...

(Awards)

Awards are our way of showing your achievements in the guild. New awards are added over time based on contests, games, etc. Their main purpose is for fun, and to hold it over your friend's heads that you have that awesome award and they don't, but they also earn you those Rare Dragons I talked about in the previous post.

Each award that you earn will be listed on the thread's first post under your name. It will appear as a small icon. The second post lists all of the current known awards underneath their full sized picture. It explains what you have to do to get the award and what type of Rare Dragon you will receive upon that award's completion.
[Minor] rendering a Radiant Dragon, [Major] a Stunning Dragon, and [Secret] an Elegant Dragon. Secret awards will only be listed after a member earns the award.

All awards will be announced in the News Cast following the award's completion, but it will be put up on the first post of the Awards thread as soon as I know you completed the requirement for earning that award. The Rare Dragon will also be put into your stash of dragons in the Dragons thread. If you feel that you've earned an award and have not received proper recognition and/or reward, feel free to let the Captain or myself know in a PM.
