Her track record hadn't been so good lately.

Not this was particularly pressing news to her, but for Armada, the lack of decent toss ups was becoming a vexing preoccupation. Ever since the pride had gone under lockdown during Kimacho's investigation things had just been too damn quiet. Exciting maybe. She had sort of a morbid fascination about the idea of a murderer being amongst them- like some sort of thief in the night. But now that was all said and done with. Nothing had really come of it, save for a few rogue deaths and poor Vlam getting his face all mangled. The pride was safe. Or, about as safe as the Firekin ever would be.

And now, she was itching for something to sink her claws into.

It was a somewhat practiced exercise for soldiers and guards to come down to the borders, and check out whatever vagabonds were scrapping about. For the first time in a while, she was rather earnestly looking forward to it. And not just for the combat.

People were getting boring. Time for some new blood.

And so, Armada settled herself down on one of the small rocks which crested just above the sand's peaks. She could scent someone on the wind, and quietly shifted her shoulders in anticipation. She had an amiable look on her face- but coupled with her strange, vacant eyes... it was somewhat arguable as to how 'amiable' it really seemed.

Aedan had heard whispers of the pride he lurked on the edges of, was fairly confident in his abilities to prove himself and merely waited for an opportunity to do so.

It seemed after a few suns of said waiting such an opportunity now lurked on the horizon's. Although the wind was set against him her red hide stood out well enough as she sat hunched upon the rock that she was easily spotted. He was pretty sure this was on purpose and that despite the amiable look on her face she was quite capable. "Well then.." He intoned after a few moments of watching her. "Might as well get this over with yes?" She had the high ground which was a bit of a problem but such was the luck of the battlefield and you didn't always get to choose the area a fight would take place in. It was preferable yes..but not guaranteed.

Aedan was a strong lion and a few bounds brought him quickly up the hill, another and he was set to land upon her - or the the rock she sat upon - depending on what he did, claws extended and aiming to strike at her legs so that he might attempt to foil any attempt at escape she might make. It would be nice to roll her off the rock, pin her and done with things - but he doubted it would be that easy. Never was.

It didn't take long to attract attention. There was a kind of thrill in that. That there were rogues, just outside their borders, waiting- waiting for a fight. Waiting for a chance. She'd been given a chance long ago. Although she was vastly changed from the lioness she'd once been, memories of war and rebellion always brought a soft hum in her chest. How exciting!

She waited, even though he charged in plain sight. Was he expecting to take her so easily? Ah! Her days of buckling so easy underneath men's wills were gone and over with. But she still liked the sight- him charging up that slope. She almost forgot to move when he sprung, attempting to trip her up.

But it seemed it was his attempt that had faltered. Armada danced to the left. She didn't have enough time to mount a counter-attack, but a careful spring, and she was off the rock and onto more agreeable [for firekin, perhaps], ground. The sand slipped between her paws as she gripped the hot earth. "Well! You don't waste any time, do you? We might be brutes, but we do have names."

Her tail swung, enjoying the frivolous banter. "And you- vagabond? You want a chance in the pride? There must be a dozen around here! Why are you so different from all the rest?" She mused.

Aedan spin about following the Lioness' movements with keen eyes as she evaded his initial attempt. "Time is a precious commodity - I have found that few desire it to be wasted" He told her, tail tip twitching slowly from side to side - although watchful his tone is not disrespectful and his action's show no malice towards the Lioness..this was not after all a fight between enemies..but one between the hopeful and the gatekeeper so to speak.

"I am Aedan - and I have traveled long to find a Pride such as this, as I am sure many other's have, my worth and my differences for the others is for your to judge is it not?" He replied with a sly grin as he looked down at her from on top of the rock. A soft leap down and he joined her on the ground, circling slowly as he sought an opening in her defenses. A moment and he thought perhaps one existed. Aedan wasted no time to further examine the opportunity and launched himself forward, large paws reaching out to batter at her hip and hopefully..knock her off balance. Even a stumble could turn the tide in his favor - and if she fell completely to the ground well..that would be even better.

Armada snorted. A common story, to be certain. "So I hear- there are quite a few who share a story the same as yours." The red lioness moved to the side as he repositioned himself. "But not all of them are firekin. You'd do yourself a favor to just turn around. Even if you best me- you might still end up dead, out here in the desert."

They weren't a resort, that was for certain. If he was looking for shelter, he'd find little. If he was looking to hide, well- they didn't have much shade to hide secrets in. "We don't take refugees. We take warriors."

As if on cue, he pounced. He moved fast, down from the rock and hitting her sharply on the flank. It sent a burning prickling of pain down her hip. Had she been any other lion, or lioness for that matter, it would have been a solid call for retreat. Instead, the burning feeling became like a call to battle.

She stumbled once down to the earth, and made a warning swipe with her paw towards his face in an attempt to drive him back before she completely toppled. Her paw didn't connect- but hopefully it was enough to keep the next onslaught at bay. "Hah!" She thrummed. "At least you've got a little more bite then the last few I've faced."

"I seek a pride worth living in, one that is strong..I am tired of finding placid prides with little to no training, such places are more sitting targets then homes worth putting time into" He expanded on his reasons for seeking the Firekin. He could have gone on and continued to explain his reasoning - but really it didn't seem like the proper time for such discussions.

As she stumbled he was was quick to try and press his advantage, closing in swiftly with the intent of pinning her to the ground, his attempt had to be aborted however as her claws sang by a mere hairsbreadth from his face. It was a good tactic on her part, there were many places on his body where Aedan would have chosen to take the hit rather then back off...but the face was different he was a bit fond of his sight. A blind lion certainly couldn't pursue the path he'd decided to take. So she had foiled his attack and he attempted to recover his balance and momentum before she did.

Armada bounced back a few times while they traded glancing blows. By now, she had recovered her balance- but the speed on which he had first assaulted her had her on her guard for a retaliation. Blood roared in her ears. She loved that electric feeling of battle.

He was still speaking while she recovered. She seemed satisfied by his answer. At least enough not to have a retort so readily. The firekin were not a welcoming sort- but they protected their own, and they held their lands. She couldn't think of another place worth putting time into. And she had been to quite a few places.

The red lioness back up, suddenly curling and arching her back. There was no sense in charging headlong but...why the hell not? She twisted, letting her paws sink down into the sand for grip before lunging at him again, attempting to drive him backwards. But while her paws slashed- they did little more then sing in the air.

It seemed as though his expanded explanation had been enough to satisfy her questions, that or she was focusing more on the duel then she had been at the beginning. Aedan would take that to be a good thing - he wanted to be a challenge after all, leave her with a good impression.

When she dug into the sand and charged towards him - no doubt with the intention of driving him back, and he had to admit if he been less then intent on proving himself her fierce charge would have done exactly that - Aedan steadied himself, waiting..waiting as she drew closer and closer until at the very last second possible, while she was still committed to her charge the dark lion flung himself sideways, twisting to strike at her shoulder as she charged past.

His claws struck at her shoulder, ripping as she moved past. She let her body go limp- rolling to the ground and to the sand, hoping to take the weight of the strike from doing too much damage. Had this been a fight to the death- she might have worried about her exposed neck. As it were, she was still ready for a retaliation should he try something foolish... but the risk seemed good enough for now. She rolled to a stop once her belly hit the sand, a low growl seething from her throat.

But despite the growl, there was a grin stretched across her face. Her hips quivered, ready to move. She wasn't ready to try another assault- this time, she'd hold back and see what he'd do.

Almost like a taunt- she let her tail swish about in the air in an arching curve.

Aedan spun about to follow her path as she tumbled to the ground seeking to escape further damage from his strike to her shoulder, he could have tried to follow through with a second attack as she had tumbled but given the status of this friendly competition he felt no need to try such a thing.

Neither however was he fooled by her ploy as she lay on the ground - Aedan eyes her warily as her tail twitched in an almost taunting fashion. He was sure that she had some other trick up her sleeve but they could stand here forever waiting for one or the other of them to make their next move. After a few moments Aedan stopped waiting, circling about her as she lay on the ground before darting in to try and tag her on the rump.

Her ploy might have been transparent, but sooner or later he would have to come at her. As he charged at her she gave a hop backwards- lifting off the ground and using her change in position to give him a surprise cuff with her left paw. It gave a satisfying crack as she tensed her muscles to absorb the impact. It took some control to stop herself from doing a follow up.

Well. She raised her paw as though she was before realizing that her decision had already been made. She regretfully stop the last hit, letting her paw still and her body fall back to all fours. The grin that had been on her face continued, and with a satisfied snort, she dropped her battle stance.

"That wasn't bad," she said, leaning her weight on one side. "Better then half the lots that hang around her. At least enough to put a good word in for you."

She took a step back, shaking off her fur of the sand that had clung to it in her roll. Her shoulder was sore, but she was sure it wouldn't take much to harass Ea into babying it for a while. "If you mean what you say, and you are ready to live as we do- then you may want to follow!"

And with that- she took off down the sands.

Her cuff clipped him well on the chest but Aedan had not expected to get out of the fight scott free and the needling of the wound was a pain her could overlook. Stretching the muscle and satisfied that nothing to important had been damaged and that it should heal well enough on its own Aedan wasn't going to give up this opportunity due to a small wound.

"I always mean what I say" He told the female who sprinted off nearly as fast as he could respond. Without so much as a backwards glance from the direction he had come from Aedan loped after the red girl.
