It had been a peaceful night for Mozhgan so far. She’d been told to give a message to a demon and after completing her task successfully and managing to avoid any kind of punishment, the young cub was now sneaking back to her den, desperately trying to stay out of sight. Balia had told her she had to be careful and the cub had taken that advice very seriously.
The night’s events – and the fact she wasn’t tripping on her own paws quite as much - made her proud and she hadn’t had funny dreams in a good while. The little slave couldn’t help but to let a smile grace her expression. Maybe she wasn’t crazy after all. Maybe she could even be happy here.

Sometimes, Domefae wished he had his own Na'artu. But then...he didn't think Yakuti would be very happy with him if he took one. Even if he treated them far differently from the crueler lions, she was still very much against that part of his life. But at the moment...he needed something taken to his grandmother. Matata, pesky little bird he was, had dropped a rather large old claw with him, not even bothering to find Hakuna'jina himself. And Domefae had lessons to get to, lest his father or grandfather be disappointed!
So when he spot a pale coat that definitely WASN'T one of the 'pale demons' within the pride, he let out a silent sigh of relief. And moved to get her attention, his silent gestures causing him to make a rather odd squeaking noise.

The cub froze at the sound and gulped quite loudly when she saw the one who had originated it. A demon, a rather dark demon was staring straight at her. Mozi really needed to practice this whole “stealth” thing.
He didn’t say anything and so the olive cub was quite unsure on how to proceed. She almost spoke to the male but there was no way she’d ever approach a demon (one she’d never met before at least) unless specifically asked to do so. Still, she was quite sure the sound had been meant for her so she couldn’t just leave either. Heart rate quickly accelerating, Mozi took one step towards the black lion and eyed him expectantly with a tentative expression as she waited for him to address or dismiss her. Hopefully the latter.

Dome was glad when the Na'artue noticed him. He smiled slightly, setting the claw down and motioning to it. Then made as if to pick it up, and trotted in place. When he stopped, he pointed to his face, making a motion just above it with three claws out, in the area of his right eye...from his ear to his muzzle.
For anyone who understood, as his aunt Runya so suscintly put it, Dome-ese, it was obvious he wanted the claw taken to his grandmother, Hakuna'jina (the only creature in the pride with the exact scars he'd motioned). But to anyone else...well, there were LARGE disadvantages to being mute.

Oh boy, she’d really hit the jackpot this time! The demon didn’t look quite as aggressive as she’d feared (he might’ve even smiled at her though the slave couldn’t quite bring herself to believe it) and Mozi had only just started to relax when the… mocking (?) began. First it almost seemed like he wanted to give her a gift - surprising as it might seem – but then the adolescent start trotting and mimicking and just generally fooling around on the spot.
The olive-colored slave took an almost imperceptible step back, bristling a little as her eyes quickly returned to the initial worry. This was a big lion, not fully grown but more than capable of killing her ins an instant. If he was bothering to spend this much time playing mind games with one puny slave Mozi didn’t really want to know what he had planned for the big finale.
“I’m sorry… do you want something from me… sir?” she had to behave, she had to be polite and respectful at all times. She truly believed that was the only thing that could save her now.

The turquoise-eyed adolescent facepawed. Craaaaaap. It figured he'd find a Na'artue who didn't understand him. He silently sighed, then nodded and repeated the motions. Praying she understood. If not...well, he would need to figure out a way to let her know that he couldn't vocalize enough to speak.
Sparda above...for all he knew, the poor girl thought he was mocking her! And though Dome was every inch a demon, he wasn't the sort of demon to do such a thing. He was, after all, a direct descendant of Sparda himself! And his ancestor certainly wouldn't look kindly on such behavior.

Oh great, now he looked frustrated! The little slave flinched a little, looking a little more afraid. Why did he keep repeating those gestures?! She was feeling particularly intimidated by the slashing motion he made across his face. Knowing demons, that kind of sign was a nasty foreboding.
“I will do anything you ask of me…” so just ask, the frightened crimson eyes seemed to beg. “But I don’t understand. You will cut me if I take the claw…? I wouldn’t steal it, sir. I’d never do that!” Why didn’t he just talk to her? Was she really that beneath him that he wouldn’t even bother to speak directly to her? Was he accusing her of something?

Domefae sighed silently again, shaking his head. Obviously, he wasn't worried that she would steal it. He scratched one of his forelegs in thought a moment, then pointed to himself. He started making the motions of talking, then stopped and shook his head, pointing to himself again, this time his throat.
Hopefully, she would get the clue that he couldn't speak. Gods...where was Runya when she could actually be HELPFUL?

You don’t … speak? Because you… can’t?” the cub asked tentatively, first with a hint of acknowledgement and even curiosity in her tone but she seemed to slowly grow fearful again. Accusing a demon of being handicapped was quite serious and not really something she could just say lightly. Mozi didn’t even want to think about the horrible things he’d do to her if she’d offended him. There was enough distance between them that she could manage to avoid a sudden swipe but there wasn’t any kind of cover behind the pale cub where she could hide if he went berserk on her. One of her front paws trembled noticeably.

SHE GOT IT! Oh thank Sparda, SHE GOT IT. Domefae nodded, hoping to assauge the poor Na'artue's obvious fear. He came up with an idea when he noticed a bare patch of dirt in front of them, free of grass. AH HA! He pointed to the dirt, and started drawing in it with a claw. When he was done, he placed the claw on part of drawing.
It was a line in the dirt. On one end was the claw and a poor drawing of a cub. On the other was a rather poor, but recognizable drawing of a lioness. He pointed to the claw, followed the line, then pointed to the lioness. Then made the motion over his right eye again, pointing to the lioness one more time for emphasis.
Hopefully she'd get it this time.

Mozhgan relaxed considerably when her assumption was confirmed. She exhaled quite loudly and moved closer to the demon, sitting opposite from him with the drawing in between. It was rather hard to understand the pictures when they were upside down but the little slave would rather not sit next to the dark male just yet. As such it took a while for her to realize the smaller shape was not a rabbit as she’d first assumed but herself!
“Rabbit… oh, that’s me. And a lioness…” she said slowly looking closely at the demon’s reaction. This was starting to feel like a game and she might actually have started to enjoy herself if the little cub wasn’t constantly thinking the worst of Domefae.
“You want me to take the claw to the lioness…and scratch her 3 times?” Well, that was awful. It was also quite plausible, a very demon-y thing to do. But she could get in serious trouble if not outright killed for even attempting something like that. She’d never get away in one piece if she attacked a demon, would he really force her to get involved in a fight between two demons?

Dome sighed silently. She'd almost gotten it. He shook his head, then looked himself over a moment. Ah! he pointed to a scar on his back leg, then made the motion across his eye again. HOPEFULLY she would get what he was trying to communicate. It was obvious the poor thing thought he might be trying to get her to do something bad.
Dear Sparda...Yakuti would never forgive him if he hurt a Na'artue or Na'artu. It was something that helped him push angry thoughts away whenever he got annoyed with one.

He seemed to be growing frustrated again but not angry which definitely frustrated the little slave in return but not as much as it confused her. He was wasting his time with this… why didn’t he look upset? Was this one of those demons that Balia had talked about, the ones that didn’t go about hurting little Na’artues like her just because they could? She prayed the gods she could be so lucky.
“Oh. Scars. The lioness has three scars. You want me to take the claw to the lioness with three scars across the …” she looked up to the demon, trying to remember which side he’d pretended to scratch. “…right side of her face...?”
Was that it? Yes, she was quite sure. All the pieces put together, this was the most likely answer and it was a rather easy request even. She just had to ask an adult Na’artu about the scarred lioness, finding the name of the one who possessed such distinct scars wouldn't too difficult - she hoped. It was just another simple errand and Mozi felt relieved.
“If you point me in the right direction, I’ll get it done right away, sir.” She said, bowing her headas a small smile pushed at the corners of her mouth. She was quite pleased with herself really.

The adolescent nodded vigorously. She got it! He could almost dance for joy. Almost. He was too 'dignified' for such a thing around anyone but Yakuti. He nudged the claw towards her, and pointed in the direction his grandmother would most likely be in. Then he smiled slightly at her.
It was a shame he didn't have anything on him to reward the Na'artue with. She'd figured out what he wanted, despite not really understanding him well. And he knew some slaves tended to do better with encouragement rather than pain.

Yes! She’d gotten it right!
The little cub did a funny double take as the demon smiled at her, looking positively dumbstruck for a short period of time until she finally managed to recover her focus. It would be far easier for the little slave to assume that she’d imagined things but it was far too obvious that the dark lion had really smiled at her and she couldn’t disregard it as something else it this time.
“Then, with your permission…” the small Na’artue said as she picked up the claw in her mouth. “I’ll deliver it right away, sir.” And with a small bow – and a tail lashing happily behind her – Mozi waited an instant to make sure she truly was dismissed before walking away from the spot.
Hopefully, the claw didn’t have any nasty hidden meaning that would upset the scarred lioness but Mozhgan was willing to open an exception this time and trust this particular demon’s intentions. Just this once.
