Maansi sat in the shadows as was her customary watching place. She was observing the way of things. It was waking time and most were rather funny about the whole idea. It was the one time when the pride seemed to take on another light. Not fully awake demons stumbling out of dens into the night aire. Most were very grumpy, save maybe cub nurses who could hardly be any such thing. Who really wanted to be reprimanded for being idiotic with with someone elses cub. Maansi smiled a knowing grin and lay down. Most did not notice her and Maansi like it just that way.
Shababa plodded out of her den and stretched, tail corkscrewing over her back as her vertebra popped. She always enjoyed the dusk. At this time there was still some color left in the sky, not blue, no, but red like an antelope’s innards spilled across the horizon. As the sky slowly darkened, Shababa groomed herself in front of her den and watched the other demons spread out. Eventually her eyes settled upon a figure sitting in the shadows, whose pelt seemed to mimic the sky. Something about her seemed vaguely familiar. Curious, she rose and went to greet her. “Good evening,” she said casually. Everyone knew she was the Aran’shale’s niece. That was partly because she told everyone she met. She sat down beside the lioness, curled her tail around her feet and looked at her with an inquiring stare. There was nothing else readable in her expression.
Maansi grinned at the figure that sat before her. She was impressed that the adolescent had managed to spot her. Not surprised and not upset either, even though she like to be alone. "Good evening," she said in an even tone. The observant lioness looked over the other lioness and smiled recongnizing her, she practically made it her business to do so. "You are Shababa, yes, one of the Aran'shale's nieces right?"

Shababa smiled in return. Her smiles always had a staged look, as though she only ever smiled out of politeness. “That’s right. I’m studying to become Tu'azane.”
From a young age she realized that the rank of Tu’azane suited her best. Pride law was one of the few things that interested her more than causing pain. She would have made a fine Ra'alme, even practiced for that rank on some of the slaves, but there was no true power in being a torturer. Shababa desired a rank with influence.
Maansi raised an interested brow at the young lioness's statement. She knew what the ranks were and she had not decided to take on one, other than for now that of hunter, which she was not participating in much. No, she knew her task was to learn, to find her demon and know all there was to know about the pride.
Maansi gave a smile of her own, "Is that so? I think that is a very good choice. I myself seek to know to the best extent everything there is to know about this pride. I have thought maybe that particular rank would be best for me. I will have to ask Drathir for is opinion on the matter. What is it that draws you to that particular rank?"
“I simply enjoy being in charge of others. One day I’ll be a council member.” Shababa preferred to speak in absolutes about her future. To use words like ‘hope’ and ‘maybe’ would make her sound weak. If you want to gain rank in any pride, you have to have ambition. She looked at Maansi curiously. “Do you know Drathir personally?”
She realized she’d forgotten to ask the lioness’s name. Unless she gave up her name on her own, Shababa would ask once she found out about her uncle.

Maansi, "Ah I see, just what to be expected of a prince's daughter, and a kings niece. You will do well. I can see it quite clearly."
Maansi nodded at the next question, yes she did know him and she saw him often enough. "He is the one who brought me into the pride. He found me headed toward determined to gain entrance to the volcano. It from him that I have learned much of what I have come to know about the pride, that and observing, and my Sinta'har, not that he is of any real help."
Ah, so this was the lioness she’d heard about. There were rumors that she and Drathir were developing certain ‘feelings’ for each other. Shababa understood the implication, though the concept itself was out of her experience. She didn’t even love her father. It seemed like a useless emotion, anyway.
“I find it’s better to learn on your feet. Teachers can only do so much. By the way, what’s your name?”
Maansi nodded, "That is very true. A training session in fight and a good talking to aren't often enough for one who was born in the pride. I myself, do however prefer to learn from the shadows, but that is just the way I do things." She gave a feral grin to Shababa and stretched slightly. "I am Maansi'Vani. It is so very good to make your aquaintance," she said looking the female over. This one was different and intriguing and Maansi decided then and there to keep an eye on her. She might learn something interesting or maybe make a needed connection within the pride.
