It really makes me cringe every time I see that. I always feel a bit "gross" (the word escapes me) when I hear it. Especially when this person is someone who's coming from a monotheistic religion who doesn't believe that God is male or female.

What do you think?

I wouldn't know, I don't believe in God, or any gods.
However, I don't blame people for refering to him as "He".
It's impulse to use pronouns; they just aren't use to saying God all the time.

English lacks a gender neutral 3rd person personal pronoun. The closest thing we have is the impersonal object pronoun "it." Feel free to invent one, get Merriam-Webster on board, and I'm sure in just a few short months we'll be referring to God by the new gender-neutral one.

For more in the realm of linguistic gender travesties, see Spanish. In Spanish, if I call out to a group of people, all of whom could be women, those women become "chicos," as opposed to the female form "chicas." In Spanish, this is grammatically correct, as the default unless otherwise specified is to use the male form rather than the female form.
