Hello, my students.

We're going to be delving into some more complicated grammar in the next few weeks, but I figured I should give you a break first and spend some time building up your vocabulary. This lesson will consist of new nouns, verbs and adjectives for you to memorize... enjoy!

NOUNS

mado - window
hondana - bookshelf
tsukue - desk
tansu - drawers/chest
e - picture
isu - chair
todana - cabinet
denwa - telephone
heya - room
otearai - bathroom
shukudai - homework
yasai - vegetable

All of the following words are written in katakana:

sutando - lamp
terebi - television
beddo - bed
doa - door
teeburu - table
biiru - beer

VERBS:

Group 1 Verbs/ U-Verbs:

asobimasu - to play (This word doesn't just apply to children. Adults also "play")
oyogimasu - to swin
utaimasu - to sing
tsutsumimasu - to wrap
mochimasu - to hold
yobimasu - to call, to invite

Group 2 Verbs/ Ru-Verbs:

misemasu - to show
motteimasu - to own, to have
iremasu - to put in
tsutomemasu - to become employed (NOT "to hire")

ADJECTIVES:

i-adjectives:

atarashii - new
akarui - bright (not as in, "intelligent")
semai - cramped, narrow
furui - old
hiroi - spacious, wide
kitanai - dirty, messy
kurai - dark (not as in "morbid")

na-adjectives:

shizuka - quiet
rippa - splendid, gorgeous
yuumei - famous
shinsetsu - kind
jyouzu - skillful

These lists of adjectives should greatly expand your current Japanese vocabulary. For those of you who are serious learners, I would recommend writing these out on flashcards in hiragana, to improve your reading skills.

As always, you can leave any questions or comments for me here.

Study hard!

how do we make it into a good sentences forms?

This is a whole bunch of new vocabulary that you can use with any of the grammar forms you've already learned here. I'll give you some example of how you can use the new vocabulary with the grammar you already know.

lesson 16. like, dislike, hated lesson.

You learned to say watashi WA object GA suki desu. Here are some new objects to use!

ex. わたしはビールがすきです。 watashi wa biiru ga suki desu. (I like beer.)

lesson 10/12. days/past tense

Here you learned to change verbs to past tense. You can do the same with the new verbs you learn.

ex. きのうともだちとあそびました。kinou tomodachi to asobimashita. (Yesterday I played with my friend)

Your turn!

i was trying to say i hang out with my dog at home.

So some vocab to use in that case would be:

家/いえ/ie = house
犬/いぬ/inu = dog
遊びます/あそびます/asobimasu = to play
たむろします/tamuroshimasu = to hang out

One way to say it is...

私は家に犬と遊びます。 わたしはいえにいぬとあそびます。 watashi wa ie ni
inu to asobimasu.

In this case I used asobimasu.

I can see now that you were trying to use the verb tamurosuru. You need to have the suru as that makes it into a verb. One common example of this is benkyousuru, to study. Benkyou by itself isn't a verb, it needs the suru or shimasu to make it into a verb. So, to use the verb tamurosuru...

私は家に犬とたむろします。 わたしはいえにいぬとたむろします。 watashi wa ie ni inu to tamuroshimasu.

Does that make sense?
