To kick off a month of crazy Hiragana madness, I want you to test yourself, right now. Pull up this chart and see how many you can identify without looking them up. Then put that away. Next, take out a blank piece of paper and a writing instrument, and see how many hiragana you can actually write down from memory.

Then, answer these questions honestly:

How well can you read hirigana?

I was able to read all of them on the chart, but I just finally was able to memorize them all yesterday, so it's all very new to me. I read it very very slowly, and have a lot of issues with it. Plus I haven't learned all the ones with the circles and dashes that change the sounds...


How well can you write hirigana?

The characters, pretty well.
Sentences, very badly.

What is your hirigana goal?

I want to be able to read and write all of the hirigana characters without agonizing over every little line. I want to know them, and not just on a hesitant level.
