Kasi stood by the duelling area, her body aching lightly from the daily strains that had been placed on it. Water was still absent and the sun was still so hot. She was thankful that evening was fast approaching which meant that the sun's punishing heat would finally fade a little. It dropped down to cold quickly though, so she had to be mindful to not stay out too late. She paused, shaking her head. Wow, she just imposed her own curfew on herself, she thought with a slight smile. She really was an 'adult' now, she supposed.
Shaking her head to dispel those thoughts, she glanced around, looking for her duelling partner for the evening. Spotting him, she shot him a crooked grin. "Ready to get beaten again?" She called out, standing straight. She had gotten lucky on her last duel with him, but she didn't think that she would necessarily be that lucky again.
She motioned towards the duelling area and moved towards one of the empty places. There weren't many people around that evening, though that was probably due to the drought and not due to the time of day. She was comfortable when it came to duels. They were something constant - something the drought couldn't take away. Well, they could, but Kasi would fight to not let it.
She slid her gaze back to Xennek, a small smile on her maw.

It was a lazy day for him. Normally the lion would be out patrolling with others or at least training with soldiers, but today the heat had gotten to him. Well not so much the heat, but rather the lack of water. No water meant no real activity as everyone sought to save energy or at least wait until the sun was lower in the sky. And today Xennek went for that. It nearly killed him. Well not literally, but boredom was pretty bad. Almost as bad as the drought. Almost.
The one thing the lion hated was standing still. And so by the time the evening started to approach he was out on the prowl. This time it wasn't a random walk either. He had a purpose. And it required a certain other firekin. Surely she would be arriving anytime. Grinning the male slipped into the dueling area.
"'Bout time." He chuckled, "The heat must be gettin' to ya to think that I'll let that happen again." Returning the smile he started over towards her. "Ladies first~"

Kasi gave another crooked smile. "Well, I'll go easy on you - make sure it doesn't happen again." That was a lie. Kasi didn't believe in going easy, especially since he had gotten a hit or two in last time. He was a good fighter, he was just having a bad run last time. This time, she was excited to see what would happen.
As he gave her the first attack, she moved rapidly, launching herself towards him with her paws outstretched. She was a fast female, she knew that, so she had expected to take him off guard by acting quickly, but as she reached him, paws expecting to land a blow, she felt only air. She hit the ground smoothly and spun to find him. She'd missed! How embarrassing...

Xennek laughed. "Alright." The next thing both of them knew the lion was actually twisting backwards in order to avoid the pair of claws aimed towards him. Woah! He had nearly forgotten how quickly the girl could move. That was a close one. "Must really be going easy now, Kasi." He teased as he felt the lioness brush past him.
But the close call was fine with him. A miss was a miss after all. And he did love playing things dangerously. Too safe was just too boring. As he thought that the lion had been moving and with ease of experience Xennek raced towards Kasi, moving in when she spun to find him. Head down he rammed her hard in the ribs. As much as he enjoyed a fun duel Xennek was not going to take things so lightly this time. Rolling away from the lioness Xennek shot a grin her way. It was not going to be so easy to duel him this time.
He had his pride as a warrior to protect after all.

As she turned, she prepared to retort to his tease, but was caught offguard at the solid hit that landed to her ribs. She let out an omph as she was forced backwards and fell onto the sand, landing with a heavy thud, though she rolled back to her feet quickly. Her ribs throbbed, but she kept her gaze firmly on Xennek. Good. He was playing to win this time. The last time they'd duelled, he had seemed so distracted. Not any more.
She moved around in a circle, watching him closely, before she threw herself once more at him, claws aiming for his side - fully outstretched. She had to pay him back for that throbbing in her ribs, but even as she felt her claws glide where he had been moments before, she once again felt only air, and landed dissatisfied in the sand. She resisted a growl and turned swiftly, bracing herself for another attack.

Grinning the male dived to the ground gaining very few scrapes compared to the damage he would have gotten it he had allowed her attack to get any closer. Jeesh! Still the lion couldn't help, but to flash a grin towards Kasi as she landed. He remembered that speed from last time and had made certain that his own body matched it this round.
Giving less than a moment for her to breath the lion rushed forward again. This time instead of ramming into her Xennek acted as if he was going to attack her front before twisting sharply to the side and made a swipe towards her legs. Feeling his attack connect the male rolled through the sand so he could face her again. Normally he might have spared a minute to just turn normally, but not here. Speed was key in this match.
And he knew better than to leave his back open to this fiery opponent.

Kasi had braced herself and tried to dodge the attack to her front, but had not expected him to change his attack so sharply. She felt the swipe hit her legs and it forced her to stumble, but she didn't fall this time. Great, now her ribs and her leg ached, but still she stood firm. He had twisted back to face her quick. She had been fastest last time, but it seemed her luck had changed.
She wasn't going to go down easy though. She aimed her next attack at his chest. She didn't have the bulk to move him if she slammed into him, like he had done to her, so instead she used her claws and swiped at him hard. She felt her claws connect, finally, and she rejoiced inwardly as she twisted and bounded back a pace or two, preparing to move again once he attacked.
She grinned.
Finally landed a hit!

Xennek almost flinched back. That stung. Though seceretly the male was proud that she had hit him. This was good. The duel was now finally starting. Grinning the male looked back up and over to his opponent, "Starting to get serious now?" He teased.
Taking a step back the lion started to move, slowly circling around Kasi. Just ramming into her wouldn't work. Or it might, but next time he would have to make sure to put more pressure on her legs if he was to bring her down and pin her. Hmm. Xennek smiled, ah well. He should probably stop thinking so much and act more. "Sorry. I was just wondering if you're ready to start now or do we need to keep warming up?" He chuckled low before bracing himself for her next attack.

Kasi huffed at his comment. "I'm always serious with fighting!" She snapped, even though she knew it was a tease. Kasi was..not good with teasing. It let her feeling out of sorts, even though she usually knew the other person was not being purposely cruel. It was the problem she had with Kakek, every time he was around, he would tease her and she would strike out in annoyance, mostly verbally. She shook her head. Wow, this was not the right time to be thinking about that jerk, she thought firmly.
She scowled at his next comment. "I don't know where you've been, but this isn't a warm up."
She knew the instant she threw herself at him that she would miss. She had let herself get annoyed at him, and hadn't aimed her attack properly. She kept her paws outstretched and followed through with the attack though, landing disappointedly in the hot sand, before spinning back to face him.
She had to focus. She was better than this, she thought furiously.

Xennek just chuckled at her reaction to his teasing. He had nearly forgotten how easily it was for him to get such a reaction from her during a duel. It actually reminded him of someone else he had trained. That 'cub' always had a temper during their duels and it was the key to his winning streak in the beginning. Eventually Sekayi growed though and began to keep that temper of his in check during their fights.
Seemed he would have to teach the same lesson here.
"Oh really? You could have fooled me." Grinning the lion dodged as she threw herself at him. Anger definitely had turned that attack from its target. It also left him an opening. Perfect. Without hesitation Xennek pushed his body off of the ground and just as she turned to face him sent a blow to Kasi's ribs.

Kasi rolled her eyes at the taunt, but the blow to her ribs sent her reeling back. How had he gotten so much faster? Or perhaps she was simply slower today? She didn't know what was wrong with her, but she just couldn't get herself together and fight properly!
She stumbled back a pace or two, and aimed her blow at his face - but she didn't keep her claws out. Hitting his jaw was one thing, but if she missed and scratched his eyes and had her claws out? That just wasn't right. So she kept them in as she threw the blow.
She shouldn't have worried, because she missed him altogether and scowled. Damn!
Her eyes locked on him, her body strained and tense.

She missed. The lion gave a sigh of relief. Though thankfully her claws hadn't been out his face was important to him. Sekayi wouldn't let him hear the end of it if he got busted there. The thought made Xennek laugh softly to himself. Really should he care about something like that? Probably not, but still.
Focusing on Kasi, Xennek only shook his head. "You let emotions rule for a bit there." He commented slowly moving forward. But just as quickly his direction and speed changed. Slamming into Kasi Xennek didn't pull back, but instead stood over her. "That was good for today. Call it quits?" He asked looking down at her with a small smile. He knew better to push it during the drought and he did have her this time. So for him it was over.
"Come. The shade looks nice right now, don't you think?" Backing up Xennek sent a smile over his shoulder to Kasi and waited a moment before heading out of the dueling area and towards the dens.

Kasi hit the sand heavily with his last attack and she laid there a moment, knowing from the way he stood there that the duel was over. She was tired, anyway, she excused her poor behaviour but had to concede his point. "I don't do well with 'teasing', I suppose," she said from her spot still in the sand. She pushed herself and nodded, agreeing to call it quits. There was no point continuing. She'd only end up more sore due to his attacks.
She stood straight and shook the sand from her fur, before giving him a small smile. Okay. She might hate it, but she had to admit it. "Good duel," she told Xennek honestly, before following him out of the duelling area and towards the dens that offered shade.
"But you do know you owe me a rematch." She shot him a crooked grin, looking forward to redeeming herself with their next duel. She was just distracted and tired today. She'd beat him next time.
