((backdated to juve/adol))
User ImageN'Seka really enjoyed his increased freedom. He had grown quite a bit even if he still was one of the smaller boys in his litter. His healthy brothers were larger and bulkier, but he figured he'd catch up soon now. The plague seemed to have run its course in his small body, and being a carrier was awesome. For once he had the stamina to explore as much as he wanted (or until mom sent one of his older brothers to fetch him. Not cool!). One of his favorite pastimes was to find adults or adolescents with cool jobs and then pester them about what they did. Today he was stalking the outer areas of the inhabited part of the pride's territory, hoping he'd meet a scout, a returning hunting party or perhaps even a warrior. He didn't dare to go as far as to the border proper since his mother seemed to have eyes everywhere.

He had changed his mind about what he wanted to when he grew up tons of times already. Since there was no Monster hunter job he figured he'd have to settle for warrior, or scout, or even just a hunter. Some of the prey-beasts looked pretty monstrous to his young eyes so it'd probably be cool.

Malaya was bored with the dull fundamentals of learning to be a scout. It seemed like all her mentor had her doing was staying safe, and learning tracks or something equally boring. She wanted action. To spy on those who weren't suppose to be in their territory. The young lioness was prone to imagining all the great things she would do as an adult, rather than focusing on her studies.

A paw print in the dust just in front of her pulled her wandering mind back to the present. What was this? She had to study it a moment before realizing sheepishly that it was a lion paw. Albeit a rather young lion. Clearly the owner then had to be part of the pride, so it was ok. Malaya looked in the direction the paw prints headed. What was a young lion doing out here anyhow? He couldn't be sick could he? She suppressed a shudder even though she knew the disease had already passed through her. Deciding it was her duty, the black female followed after the trail.

N'Seka had no idea he was being tracked since his focus was on a disturbance near the horizon. The cloud of dust he spotted in the distance might come from a hunt, or perhaps a large flock of prey animals moving about. Or... something. Probably not monsters. Most likely not the Goddess coming for a visit. Ah, and now he'd run out of unlikely causes too. All N'Seka knew about the lands outside his home was what stories and fairytales had told him, and he wasn't sure if what was true or not anymore. Back when he was sick all the time he listened a lot to stories, and he had been laughed at plenty of times for being too trusting and believing all stories to be real. In time he might learn what was what, but now he was just confused when it came to the world outside his pride.

The tracks didn't even try to hide. Malaya found it ridiculously easy to follow. She might not have been so pleased with herself if she realized the tracks didn't challenge her any. As it was, it took only minutes for her to catch up to the lion making the tracks. Like she'd thought, only a young one. She mischievously tried to approach him as quiet as possible. Unfortunately she wasn't the most graceful yet.

"So aren't you a little young to be out here?" She said loftily from her vantage of an adol. Her mentor had gone off to do his stuff and left her on her own with time to kill. While she didn't relish leading the young lion back, it was better than doing something for those sick lions. Malaya didn't mind hunting, but taking the meat to them made her skin crawl.

N'Seka nearly jumped out of his skin when someone close behind greeted him. He turned around and felt very foolish for overreacting like that. Some warrior he would be if he was spooked that easily. The girl that had talked to him was probably around the same age as his older brothers and sisters and she looked healthy. Her colouration told him she was probably related to the guard Sliabh. Many of the stories he'd heard while he was sick had been about the guard that brought so many new members to the pride.

"You scared me," he said and laughed, "I was watching that thing over there. Do you know what it is?"

He turned around to check if the moving dust was still out there. The older girl might know. He didn't mean to ignore her question, but the disturbance in the distance was intriguing and he simply forgot to answer.

Malaya gave a pleased purr that she'd sneaked up behind him. She twitched her ear as he didn't seem to take her seriously. That irked her slightly. "Well young-lings shouldn't be out here alone." She tried to give him a stern glare to get his attention that he had ignored her.

Giving a sigh, the female lifted her head to look. It took her a moment to realize that the cloud she took for granted was what fascinated him. Her tail gave a non-interested flick. "It's probably the hunters. Now," she said sternly, "what do you think you're doing out here?"

"Oh," N'Seka said, and finally managed to focus on something else than the intriguing dust cloud, "Are you going to be a hunter?"

He squirmed under her stern look, and figured he better explain himself somehow. She was older after all, and he was supposed to listen to older pride members. But he wasn't that far out, was he? The border wasn't that close, as far as he knew, but he could have strayed too far. N'Seka truly enjoyed his newfound freedom from disease, but he needed to learn that there were still boundaries.

"I'm just watching for hunters," he said and lowered his ears, looking a bit ashamed, "And warriors, and scouts... I want to be something cool like that when I grow up! I'm not too far out am I? It's just so fun to be able to go explore without getting all achy and stuff."

"Nope," she couldn't help lifting her head in pride as she denied that common role. In her eyes, anyone could be a hunter. "I'm in training to be a scout." Her voice clearly said she thought that was way much cooler. Malaya eyed him as he squirmed a bit. At least now he took her seriously. He was looking for them?

"Why are you looking for them? Don't you have a mentor teaching you? You could get hurt or lost if you don't know your way. Besides you probably wouldn't even be able to find them if their doing their job. Can you imagine how much trouble you'd be in if you got in their way at a critical time?" She could just see all sorts of bad things happening to him. Her ears perked up at the mention of aches.

"Oh? Are you a carrier too? I'm Malaya." She smiled at him. It was indeed nice to get away from the scent of pain and death.

"Coool," N'seka said, clearly agreeing that scout was a worthwhile task. His ears lowered a little as she told him off for being here. He hadn't meant to get in the way or get hurt. "I'm not old enough to pic a mentor yet," he admitted in a low voice, "But I wasn't going to get in the way, I promise!"

So perhaps he shouldn't stray like this, but it was too tempting not to now that he could. She seemed to understand that part at least, and he smiled back at her when she told him that she was a carrier. That meant she knew both how it felt like to be sick and how it felt like not to be. As a sick cub he hadn't really known what he missed, and his completely healthy peers didn't really get how lucky they were. It was one thing to see others being sick, but when he saw sick lions he knew what it felt like.

"Yeah, I am," he said and beamed at her, "I still need to take some of the icky herbs, but I don't feel bad any more now. And I can wrestle without coughing!"

That leopard he'd play fighted with a couple of days ago would probably never understand how awesome it was to be able to wrestle without coughing.

"You're one of Sliabh's kids, right?" he asked. "I know your brother Ruko with the butterfly mask. is he still sick?"

Malaya looked down at her pridemate. She wanted him to be impressed with her, yet she could understand where he was coming from. She was sure that if she didn't stay with him he'd absolutely find trouble. Then if he got hurt, she'd be in trouble for not watching him.

"Alright. I'll go with you for awhile to keep you outta danger then we go back." Maybe he'd be grateful for a lesson or two. She grinned. "Any ideas what you'd like to mentor to?" Find out his interests.

"Ugh I remember those and wish I didn't." Malaya made a funny face for him. Why couldn't the healers make them taste better? "Tell you what N'seka. You become a healer and figure out a way to make 'em taste better and I'll go gather herbs with you." She laughed, making it into a joke. The coughing was bad. It always woke her up at night.

A nod confirmed her as one of Sliabh's many children. She often wondered how her mother and lone brother were doing. "I..... I don't know." Malaya frowned. She'd been so busy with her training that she hadn't checked up on her siblings. She really should do that.

He's still sick, (Ruko that is) he dies at adolescence after siring a litter of cubs with Pestilence.

"Meh," N'Seka said and wrinkled his nose, "Mom is a healer but I don't know if I want to be one. My friend Mlinzi is all into herbs and cures and stuff, but I get fed up with them sometimes, you know? He knows what herbs are good just from the smell, but I can never tell one from the other."

He hadn't answered her question about what to mentor to. Mostly since he wasn't really sure yet. He knew by now that monster-slayer wasn't an option, and it was a bit embarrassing to think that he had wanted to be one when he was tiny.

"I'd love to help protect the pride somehow," he said, "It doesn't really matter how I do it. I just know I want to, somehow. How did you decide to train as a scout?"

"That's alright too! It's nice to be able to do something different. Egh that does sound boring and tedious. Well what about hunting? There's so many options out there." She gave a smile of understanding.

"That's a good goal." Malaya contemplated his question. Her answer was a bit of an embarrassment. She ducked her head slightly. "Well.... I really don't like being around the sick. It's um... It makes me uncomfortable. So I chose something where I'd spend a lot of time out and about."

"C'mon N'Seka. We should be getting back." Malaya got to her feet and started heading back.

N'Seka nodded, he could certainly underrstand being uncomfortable around the sick. Many of his friends were sick since those were the cubs he could keep up with as a sick little cub. With his new freedom he was starting to make new friends, but he wouldn't forget his old ones. By now he knew his sick friends would leave him sooner than his healthy ones, but that was just the way it was, right?

"Oh ok," N'Seka said, "If we have to."

He went with her without much fuss. She'd made his little trip more legitimate after all, and he wondered if he would be able to join her some other time too.

"Malaya," he said, trying to look like a cute and well behaved kid, "Can I please try scouting with you some other time?"

Malaya was lost in thought when N'Seka spoke up a again. She pulled herself back and looked over her shoulder with a grin. "Sure I don't see why not. We can have a day arranged were you can come with me." He must be relieved to be better, she thought. It wouldn't hurt to take him. Maybe he'd decide to become a scout too! As they made their way back, she was already planning on asking her mentor.
