He had a fever that morning and a hacking cough that pulled the muscles in his sides taut and left him gasping for breath. Breath that he found hard to catch after one of those coughing fits that came so frequently.
It was hard to say whether his condition was worsening or whether it was staying at the same level. The disease had been late to manifest in him and since its emergence in his early adolescence, it had held true every day since. Sneezing, coughing, sudden switches in temperature. It was something he had grown used to, though he wasn't sure why he had been chosen to linger when so many others were taken so quickly. And now with his family all gone and so many of his friends already lying dead, he'd begun to wonder whether Pestilence was testing him.
Or maybe this was just a punishment.
He gave another cough, dragged a paw across his muzzle and turned bleary, tired eyes to look around. The mists had begun to lift, revealing the dark, muddy banks of the curling stream he had walked down to that morning. The shadows were still thick but the hint of sunshine above hinter promises of infiltration.
He sat amongst fallen leaves and twigs and leaned back to rub his back against the rough bark of the tree.

Umeko wrinkled her nose she had been walking for a long time and had found her self in a thick fog. When she first encounter the fog she had liked it, it was so different she had never experienced anything like it but now it had grown really dense and the lioness found herself overwhelmed and slightly disoriented this fog.
Somewhere in the distance Umeko could swear she heard someone coughing but as she spun around in circles she could see no one, she couldn't really see anything. Giving up Umeko sat trying to get her wits about her.

He was not alone.
There was the sound of paws - strangely muted against the mists - though they didn't seem to be coming any closer or getting further away. Was it another pride member come for some peace or quiet or was it an outside lion, wandering too close to the borders? He'd not had much experience with rogues - not before they had joined with the pride, anyway - but he was certain this was a place that most of them would not want to be close to.
What with the sickness and all.
Slowly, joints creaking, he padded down to the stream and stepped through it - the water so shallow they only just covered his paws. "Hello? Who goes there?" He called, hoping he was heading in the right direction.

Umeko spun around again quickly... was she loosing her mind now had she just heard someone call out her name? Umeko wondered if it was her visions coming back she hadn't had one in so long and she usually had such a hard time distinguishing them sometimes. "Hello" she called back into the mist hoping she wasn't just talking to herself now.
The purple lioness sat squinting into the mist she was pretty sure that there was someone there, she turned towards a stream to her side, she could hear someone walking around by it coming towards her if she wasn't mistaken. A smile grew across her lips when she saw the green lion come out of this mist towards her. "Hi there" she greeted him a kind tone to her voice.

He gave her a nod when the mists finally revealed her; dark of pelt but bright of eye. "Are you lost?" He asked after a moment, his voice still gruff and perhaps a little guarded. "Because I should probably warn you where you are." He gave another step and then paused, not wanting to feel like he was trying to corner her.
"These are the lands of Kitwana'antara. Are you already a member, or...?" He trailed. Or what, exactly? Should he escort her back to where it was safe.
"Because if you are not, you may find you are in a place you do not want to be." He ended at last, the markings around his face enhancing his sickly appearance.

"Kitwana'antara? Member? Lost?" Umeko mumbled back the words that the male had said to her. "I suppose I am lost, I do not know what the Kitwana is or what it would mean to be a member. Umeko imagined it w as a pride of sorts but she had never been a member of anything before, though she thought that she would life to be.
"What do you mean a place I don't want to be?" she asked cocking her head to the side. She took a step towards the male, the markings on his face made her wonder if there was something wrong wtih him, something just didn't seem quite right. "My name is Umeko'Maly, are you alright?" she asked him taking yet another step forward. .

"I am Galonii and I am as well as I will ever be." He replied at last in his low, solemn voice. "And I am one of the Priests of Pestilience within these lands. The Kitwana'antara is a place of disease. Most of us have been touched by it's presence and all of us know someone that it has taken from us. It is an incurable illness. A terminal illness. You will not catch it by simply being in our presence, but prolonged exposure could render you vulnerable."
He blinked very slowly and gestured with his head in an attempt to encourage her to turn back the way she had come.
She should be spared of the hardship he had lived with.
"So, Umeko'Maly. I think it best that you leave and steer clear of this place."

Umeko listened to the male speak her head slightly tilted to the side. She had never really come across a pride before much less one that was being ravished by a terminal illness. Umeko felt her heart strings being pulled the male seemed so kind how was it possible that he would be dying.
"But some don't get get the illness?" Umeko asked kindly. Umeko's thoughts were racing she had a strong blood line, the daughter of a God, perhaps she could stay safely help those in need in the pride. Umeko hadn't known what she was looking for when she was travelling about the rogue lands.
"Do new lions ever join prides?" she asked her tone was calm and concerned. She wanted to know more.

His jaw tightened. "Not all. Lions are the only ones who can contract the illness. We have other species living here to aid those who are perishing." He paused a moment before continuing. "For a lion to be immune to the illness...it is possible, but it is also extremely rare. There's also no way of finding out. You would have to be exposed to the disease to discover this and by then, it'd be too late."
His dull eyes closed for a moment. "We have lions join, though I do not know why. Perhaps they wish for heartache. I do not know. I can't answer for them because I was born here."
"Why would you want to join, Umeko'Maly, when it would only bring you sadness and death?" He shook his head gruffly. "No, enough, heed my warning and leave." And he started to turn away, hoping she would listen to him.

His words made her freeze and think but only for a moment. She didn't know why and she wasn't sure that she would ever understand it but she was drawn not only to the pride but to this particular male. She took a step towards him following him. She hoped that he wouldn't turn her away.
"I want to stay, I was called her I know not why but I am here and this is where I was meant to be." she said with a firmness that told she wasn't messing around. She hoped that the blood from her father would run strong in her veins and give her more then just the sight that she could rarely rely on. She didn't say anything else to the male as she followed him into what she assumed was the prides lands.

He gave no indication that he heard her, dipping his head and moving on, mist swirling around his paws as he stepped down through the slew of mud and began to follow the path back to his home. Back to his den.
Some people couldn't be helped.
If it she wanted to meet an early death then so be it. He wouldn't be there to watch it happen, not until the end when he would be praying over her dead body, preparing to send her onto the next life. He just couldn't understand why anyone would want to join. Couldn't understand why they didn't just turn and flee. Maybe it was because they did not truly understand death the way that he did. Maybe they underestimated the coldness of its touch.
