My Story»» Born the great-granddaughter of a cursed member of the last generation, Asami grew up on the Sohma estate surrounded by tales of the Zodiac. Unlike other outsiders, the girl wasn't as repulsed by the sight of her cursed cousins in their true forms. Sure they were terrifying the first few times she saw one of her cousins transform, but she actually spent most of her life wishing that she could be one herself, which is why died her hair an auburn red - to make her appear like one of the Zodiacs who all have natural hair colors other than black. What she wants is to have the same sort of connection the Zodaics have. She wants to have a group people who could actually understand her and love her for who she really was the way Takami loved his Zodiacs, that was what Asami longed for. But that was just because her parents only cared about their status in the Sohma family and the business they ran in the nearby town, Of course, she knew deep down that Takami would never care for an outsider the way he did for his Zodiacs, but maybe, someday she could find someone who would love her and protect her the way her own parents never would.

Fortunately for her, Asami's longing to be a Zodiac was never transformed into an envy of the actual cursed members, but rather she was completely mesmerized by her cousins and idolized them in her mind. When Takami took over as the head of the family, she immediately pledged her allegiance to him and practically worshiped the young god. An action that in her beyond optimistic mind was later rewarded when she graduated college as education major and Takami happened to hire her as a tutor specifically for the younger Zodiacs.

Her only downfall and best kept secret is her sympathy for the cat. She has always felt sorry for the poor soul who would be truly cursed as the hated cat. She has longed for nothing more (other than her impossible wish to become a Zodiac) her whole life than to be able to show the new cat kindness and offer him a friendship that she knows will be denied by other outsiders and Zodiacs alike. When she heard that the new cat had been found a week before her new pupil arrived, Asami was ecstatic, only to have her hopes of meeting him shattered when he was immediately locked in isolation for slipping into Takami's precious coy pond.

She has never spoken to Joshua Theodore Sohma, the name she soon learned belonged to the cat, but she has seen him around the estate. Part of her longs to find friendship with the one person who might possibly understand her lifelong wish of being a Zodiac member, while the more dominant logical side worries that Takami would consider her tainted by a relationship with the cat and would find her services an unnecessary indulgence that would only serve to taint her pupils with Joshua's despicable cat-ness.

What would you do if you got a telephone call telling you that your brother was dead and he had left a child behind? Had that situation been replayed the outcome would be anyone's guess. For me, I dropped everything I had and flew down to Japan, Shikoku. I was only sixteen, but I had the backing of my uncle, who could not leave Russia or our homeland; our people needed him. I met with the head of the Sohma family on my first night in Japan. He was a strange man, but he told me that their family held a secret, which he would only divulge if I agreed to look after my brother's son. Had I more time to establish relations there, I might have turned the tables and forced him to spill the beans without using a mere baby as a hostage.

Ah the stupidity of a teenager. I agreed (I mean my nephew in their hands wasn't it?!) and they were 'kind enough' to allow my two escorts accompany me. The drive to their remote estate sent chills up my spine. For all I know, this could be my brother's deathbed. They brought us past the main gate, then a few minutes later, yet another gate. The japanese are strange people... so many gates but no proper security it seemed. Eventually we were asked to get out, and I was asked, politely again, to follow Sohma-sama and the translator alone into the main building. We walked along the garden path, past a few ponds with croaking frogs. He explained, trying to keep his tone casual but I could sense a nervous stutter, that their family was afflicted with a strange phenomenon. Some called it a curse, others called it spiritual purity. Few in their new generations believed it, and only thought it a story passed from senile elders, but the proof had finally shown itself once more.

We entered what seemed like a traditional Japanese building, wooden boards and struts and ceiling beams. Before I knew it, we had stepped outside again, into the backyard. I swear I nearly bolted then. Which idiot would actually follow in his dead brother's footsteps into the grave? I heard a small wail, the unmistakable cry of a baby. It came from outside, in the evening darkness, at the bottom of one of the slopes.

'Oh he's still in the play pen.' Sohma muttered.

Really? An outdoor playpen at seven in the evening during autumn? We took some stairs down, the ground sunk into a concrete pit which looked a bit like an unfinished swimming pool. At the bottom of the stairs was another gate, wooden fences surrounding the small 'playpen'. It looked more like a dog kennel, with toys strewn over the bare concrete floor. We weren't alone. A young maid quickly stood and bowed, before shuffling nervously to the side to whisper to the head of the family. The child in question was no where to be seen, but it was easy to guess where he was. Nestled in the corner of the concrete prison was a small kennel, lined with the fluff of a blanket. Was that supposed to make this whole thing seem marginally humane?!

'Rei-kun! Kochi kochi!' The maid bent a little, waiting for a small black-haired head to appear before waving him over. To my horror, the toddler was naked and he tottered over to her with some reservation, distrust evident in his dark eyes. A moment after he had bumped into her leg, I felt my heart plummet. Whatever that creature was, its unnatural appearance had stabbed into my mind like a heated iron.

'The dragon of the zodiac. The other spirits will likely be reincarnated in a few years.'

We retreated into the building upstairs, the maid as well, leaving the strange biped reptile thing to run around in the darkness. He offered me some sake and I accepted, drinking myself half-drunk before I told him that I would take him as my own. He sounded relieved, then ever so kindly reminded me that my escorts were getting worried. I sent them back to our hotel room and spent the night in the Sohma estate, listening to the shrieking wail of a penned dinosaur.
Over the next few weeks, I discovered the evil cycle. But there wasn't much I could do about it. The demon had nearly bitten a maid's hand off and the head of the family insisted on all precautions to ensure the monster didn't escape its prison. I was not prepared for parenting, but I wasn't new to human psychology. Rei wanted attention, but in a dangerous form, no one could really interact with him or give him the reassurance that all children needed. It was no surprise that he spent most of his time in such a grotesque state.

I went over the family records with the translator. It was depressing. If the god was not born, many of the cursed members ended up dying from illness or depression, some committed suicide, or were killed during their demonic rampages.

I needed to move him out of those concrete 'pens' as soon as possible, but it felt like an uphill battle. Regardless, we got a Sohma relative, an architect, to design the house. A dome house taking on western designs, appearing quaint on the outside but proving as contained as a bunker needed to be. Ground floor garage and store, second floor lounge, kitchen and dining, third floor bedrooms... but it was the basement everyone worried over. We sat the house like a snow-globe atop a base, braced by a network of wires and frames to allow the whole building to shift and tilt in event of an earthquake. We brought in stainless steel, welded them into the skeleton of the building to secure the prison bars. Toilet, bath and bed, all secured to the floor, all behind bars. The head of the family insisted on it. After seeing the maid's wound, I had no choice but to agree with his paranoia. It was disturbing to think that a ten-month old had caused those scars.

When all was done, three-year old Rei chose the wrong day to throw a tantrum. We ended up tranquilizing him and carrying him over to his new home. I felt like killing myself when I saw the look on his face after he woke up.
Its spring now. Raleigh is five. I've thrown all parenting textbooks into the fireplace. At best they give me an insight into a child's mind and brace me for the nightmares to come. At worst they depress me with their promises that he will learn to grow up and lead a healthy and happy life socializing with other friends et cetera. There's still no news of another zodiac being born. 'A few years' my arse.

I'm working with an underboss, setting up a proper base here in Japan. The other yakuza rings tolerate us, but it hasn't been easy-going. I've had a few rough fights myself. My typical day is as such: Wake up, prepare breakfast, wake Raleigh for breakfast, play with him until he falls asleep, transfer him into the basement, go to work, get ******** up by work, come home, make dinner, try to placate him enough to transform out of his demon form, feed him, bathe him, read him stories, wait for him to fall asleep in the third-storey bedroom, watch the camera recordings of the prison room, make notes, read scientific papers, fall asleep, wake up in the middle of the night, placate him, fall asleep or watch the sun rise.

The head was right on one thing though. I'm incredibly lucky. Dragon's fortune they say...
Raleigh's a little slow with reading, but I'm not too concerned. If he can't live in normal society then I don't see the point in rushing his education along. Its not like he has to go out and graduate from high school and get a job in the provision shop or the refueling station. I honestly don't know what he can do after he's grown up. He bit his tutor two days ago. I hope the man doesn't quit - where am I supposed to find a replacement Sohma who has enough patience with that brat?

Speaking of patience, no, rather... speaking of that brat. He called me yesterday.

'Hi. Da. Can you come pick me?'

'Yea..', I go, 'where are you?'

'I think I'm in Tokyo.'

'You think...?!'

'Yea. Uh hang on. This kid knows the address! Oh... um... yes we're in Tokyo.'

At that point in time, I could yell at him and waste the rest of the phone call, or do the sensible thing.

'Give me the full address. Now!'

The yelling can wait until I meet him.

As a father, I've learned to "prioritize stuff". I spend the rest of the car ride thinking of how to punish him, yet I can't stop imagining him getting knocked over by vehicles or stepping onto the train tracks or transforming in the middle of a traffic crossing...

My Story»» Growing up, Zeke would hear stories of his grandparents from his father. Zeke had never met his grandparents, both of them having died before he was born. Zeke had always wanted to know more about them. All of his friends still had most of their grandparents, but Zeke was raised by just his father so he didn’t even have his grandparents on his mother’s side. The stories he heard he believed as a young child, but started to think his father was crazy for believing them as he got older. His father talked about being the son of two demons, members of a cursed group that were of the zodiac. It was all too much to believe. His father would talk about never being able to get a hug or be held by his mother because she would turn into a demon if that happened. Zeke just thought it was some complex set of lies being told to him. He thought there was some other reason why his dad was talking about how his grandparents were great people, and he loved them dearly, but life hadn’t been the easiest for them or for him. That changed though, when he actually saw a demon. His father had made it a point to go and try and see some of the zodiac as they were being born again. Later, Zeke would figure that it was because his father missed his parents dearly and this somehow made him feel close to them again. Zeke doesn’t remember much about what happened, but he had seen Rei in his demon form. He remembered how scared he was, how it had finally clicked in his head that everything his father had been telling him was right. That he was related to demons too. Zeke couldn’t sleep for days, being afraid all the time, even if there was no danger. His father then told him the story of the first time he had seen his parents transform, how scared he had been. That he had ran and refused to do anything with his parents for a while and how much it broke their hearts. Zeke was told he shouldn’t be afraid. As Zeke got a little older, he started to better understand the curse and wasn’t afraid anymore. Instead, those fears he had he turned into something else. He started to understand how hard their lives had to be if everyone was afraid of their true form. Zeke wanted to do something. As soon as he graduated high school he went to college and then into medical school. He’s currently working as the Sohma family doctor.
