User ImageBifrost didn't have any particular plans for the day. He had eaten at the kill the thralls had brought in for those unable or unwilling to hunt. After that he'd groomed and napped, keeping one ear open for juicy gossip. You could pick up all kinds of things around the shared kill, but today he heard nothing out of the ordinary. The strangest rumors about Ru's exile still circulated, but by now he was pretty sure he'd heard them all. He had even started one or two, just to see how long it would take to get back to him again. Always a fun pastime.

At the moment he was sprawled on a sun warmed rock, grooming lazily and exercising his voice when his mouth wasn't otherwise occupied. The endless humming and scale singing was enough to drive anyone batty, but he did it without thinking. A reaver had to spar and fight to stay fit, right? This was exactly the same thing, and if anyone had a problem with that they could go bugger a hedgehog.

"Hah! Hah! Hah!" he exclaimed, using his deep abdominal muscles to help the tone carry strong.

Udongo had had a pleasant task today, one she had felt fairly confident in handling: Hunting. Of course, she'd not been the fastest or fiercest of the thralls sent to collect food, but she had managed to keep her paws underneath herself, and she had certainly been helpful when the time came for hauling the prey back to the pride.

Of course, after that she'd been given a few other errands, but as a thrall she could hardly expect to be allowed to eat before the freeborns had had their fill. She'd figured that much out, at least.

So now she was coming back to sniff around at the remains and see if there was any room for her to have a go at them, but a series of very odd sounds made her hesitate and look around. Her eyes fell on a blue lion reclining on a rock nearby, and she stopped dead in her tracks as she realized that the weird sounds were coming from him.

Her head tilted first one way, and then the other, as she puzzled over the blue male, but then some very sudden, almost cough-like noises made her take a few steps towards him, ears turned back and held low in concern.

"Are... Are you all right?" She inquired, her confusion as honest as it was obvious.

Bifrost turned to face the large lioness that had addressed him. He couldn't remember her face, and he could certainly not connect it to a name. That either meant that she was a newly joined outlander or that she was a thrall. And he did make a point to keep on top of the new arrivals. Thrall, he decided. She looked strong enough, but even strong lions could be captured. Perhaps she wasn't that smart. He considered making fun of her confusion and lack of knowledge of the arts, but messing with thralls wasn't really his thing. There was no sport in picking on the lowes of the low. And add to that the fact that he'd seen what thralls sometimes did to meals intended for the worst bullies of the pride.

"Oh, there's nothing wrong with me," he said, "I'm just warming up so I don't hurt myself."

Udongo frowned in a way she hoped looked like she was totally getting his point, and nodded slowly while she did a thorough double-check of the blue male to see if there was something about him that she had missed, that could make his statement any clearer. He did seem to expect her to get it, after all.

She had always implicitly accepted the belief of the Mizimu'Tungika that the color of a lion's pelt reflected the color of the soul within, and therefore told a lot about any individual lion's personality, but ever since she'd begun her long trek away from her devastated pridelands - and especially since coming to these Stormborn people - this worldview had been continually challenged. So even though this one's decidedly blue pelt made her instinctively think "sacrifice, possibly priest" she didn't dare to assume that what he was preparing for was something spiritual.

Then again, she had absolutely no idea what sort of physical activity could possibly require the sort of warm-up exercise that caused one to make noises like that.

Her nods slowly turned to headshakes as she gave up trying to intuit anything. As usual, this was something that would be immediately obvious to anyone else, but she just couldn't get it.

Kind of hoping he wouldn't be offended or tempted to get violent (granted, since her very confusing capture, Udongo hadn't been at the recieving end of much physical abuse at all, but she was perfectly aware of her status, and frequently saw other thralls get smacked around, so, you know, it could definitely happen), she heaved a tiny little sigh aimed at herself and asked:

"Sorry, what are you warming up for? Er, if... You don't mind me asking..."

Wow... He had managed to mess with this thrall without even trying today. Definitely a bit slow, this one. Bifrost was vain, and tended to assume that everyone knew who he was and what he did, but thralls couldn't be expected to keep up with everything freeborn did, so he had more patience with this female than he would have had with a reaver or another freeborn. She might even be a new thrall that hadn't heard about him yet.

"I'm a bard," he explained with a patient smile, "Name's Bifrost, you might have heard about me. I could ruin my voice if I don't warm up before I sing, and that would be a disaster."

A bard without a functioning voice was a sad sight indeed. Sure, he could still soak up the gossip and think up clever ways to tell the tales, but it just lost a dimension without the music. Sometimes he amused the other Stormborn with catchy poetry, but when he really wanted to make a point (or mock someone) he needed music.

She did a pretty comical double-take and her ears perked right up. A bard! She'd heard about them, fleetingly, but she hadn't yet had a chance to actually meet or listen to any of them. Well, this was certainly exciting!

"Oh, oh, oh." Her paws stomped out a quick, excited little rythm against the ground, and she unknowingly inched a little closer to him, for the moment forgetting the deferrence she ought to be showing as a thrall. "You're a bard? One of those storyteller, singer, history keeper sort of people? Oh wow!"

In the Mizimu, there had been no such thing as bards - just imagine it, a whole occupation devoted entirely to entertainment! - and it was one of the things she decided she needed to understand better, if she was ever going to get a good grasp of the more peculiar aspects of this pride. And here was a real live one, right in front of her! It was an opportunity she decided she couldn't miss.

"So, like... You sing... To adults? What's that like? To have that as a... A task?"

Bifrost didn't care who adored him, as long as someone did. He puffed his chest out and basked in the attention. He was starting to change his mind about the large thrall. If she had the sense to be a fangirl she was surely worth his time. So what if she seemed a bit slow when she grasped the important things in life? He wasn't going to stick his nose in the air and refuse to entertain his audience just because it happened to be low in rank.

"Oh, it's harder than it looks," he said, and flashed his teeth in a winning grin, "Not everyone has what it takes. We must have just as good memory as any Lawspeaker and we have to be able to sing those stories, and make them funny."

Lawspeakers didn't have to be boring, and some of his father's colleagues had possessed a dry sort of humor that he had really appreciated as a cub. They had helped him realize that it was just as important how a story was told. It was possible to retell history accurately without boring an audience to death, but for the Lawspeakers it was a fine line to walk. They couldn't embellish as they pleased, and that was what had ultimately made him work to be accepted among the bards instead.

"My brother is a Lawspeaker," he said, "He inherited the position after our father. And he just doesn't get it... In fact, he's a bit of a stick in the mud. I had to work very hard to be accepted by the other bards so it wasn't as easy as inheriting a position."

"Wait, what bit of him sticks in the mud?" Udongo was listening as intently as she could, since the last thing she wanted was to have to ask and ask and ask about everything until he got angry at her slowness, and unfortunately this anxious concentration was the very thing that let the expression throw her for a loop. The moment after she had uttered her question, she realized she had most likely interpreted it far too literally, and she squeezed her eyes shut in an expression of painful embarrassment.

"Nev-nevermind. Nevermind. Nevermind. I-I-I shouldn't... I forgot to take my time and-and-and think before I spoke." Augh, and now the stress made her stutter. So much for having a decent conversation on her own, without anyone smarter around who could keep up the talking so she could do her thinking in her own time.

No, this wouldn't do. Getting worked up was only going to make things worse. Udongo took a deep breath, clamped her mouth shut and exhaled through her nose, imagining that all the stutter-knots on her tongue wafted right out of her with the rushing air. Then she looked up at the bard again, ears lowered apologetically.

"I'm sorry, I interrupted you. Your job takes a lot of hard work, and you didn't inherit it like your brother inherited his, and not everyone has what it takes." She paused for a moment as she sought the right words. "So I guess that makes you pretty awesome, right? More awesome than your brother? Because you sing stories and make them funny?"

Oh, he liked this girl! Not only did her ah... slow uptake... give him some excellent ideas for future performances. She also found him awesome. Awesome! Not everyone saw that. The large lioness had unknowingly stumbled on Bifrosts greatest weakness. Praise. He could go on and on about how good he was, and how little he cared about other Stormborn's attention but he couldn't resist honest adoration and flattery. And you could tell that this Thrall was honest, he kind of doubted she even knew how to spin a lie.

"Soo," he drawled, very pleased to have gained another fan, "What's your name thrall?"

His den had started to get rather messy, and he had meant to ask a thrall to clear out the scattered remains of his meals. Why not take this one? He could entertain her while she worked too, she would surely appreciate that!

She hesitated a moment before she answered him, her ears flicking uncertainly. She could tell that he seemed happy, but she wasn't sure what for. She'd learnt from cubhood that smiles didn't always mean people liked you - sometimes they meant that the other party had realised they were intellectually superior to her, and was about to flaunt it in a mean and hurtful way... And she HAD just made her slowness painfully obvious.

Still, she had been the one to start the conversation, so she should see it through right and proper. And besides, sometimes a smile was just a smile, and his did seem genuine, and her minders had taught her that showing some trust was never, ever something to be ashamed of. Betraying trust was.

So she chanced giving him a tentative smile back.

"I'm Udongo. Um. Pleased to meet you. Um... Bifrost?"

She wasn't a quick thinker by any standards, but she was pretty decent at retaining stuff she'd learned. Like names. The bard's name sounded kinda exotic, though, and she wasn't sure she was pronouncing it right, so the end of her sentence lifted up into more of a question than a greeting.

Udongo pronounced his name with a bit of an accent, but some thralls came from far-away places and had little knowledge of the old language so it was to be expected. But it was close enough, and she was a polite thrall, so he didn't comment on her way of speaking. Bifrost was much ruder when it came to newly joined outlanders with funny accents. He figured that since they had won an askorun they should be thick skinned enough to stand some ridicule.

"Bifrost," he confirmed, and nodded his head in greeting, "Pleased to meet you Udongo. I need some help if you don't have other tasks to complete."

It was bad form to steal a thrall from under someone's nose, and while it usually only backfired on the thrall in question he liked to at least try to check that they weren't already on an errand for someone.

"I could use some help cleaning out my den," he continued, "And I could always amuse you with a tale or two while you work."

He almost made it sound as if he was asking her for a favour, when in reality she was the lucky one. He'd been accused of being too soft with thralls before, but Bifrost liked his approach. Some of his best sources of gossip were thralls, and he doubted that they'd keep coming to him if he beat them up regularly.

Bifrost, Bifrost, Bifrost.

Udongo's lips moved slightly as she concentrated and repeated the blue bard's name to herself, trying to fit her mouth around the specific pronunciation that he had given it.

In response to his request for help she gave him a nod, that quickly turned into a headshake.

"Sure. No, I don't have anything else now."

Then her ears perked right up and she was quickly on her feet, dark eyes glittering with excitement when she realized what he was offering her in return for her help.

"Oh, oh, would you? And would you tell me more about what it's like to be a bard, too? 'cuz that would be awesome! I've been wondering and wondering about it since I got here, but I've been told I should just work and not ask questions, so I haven't really had a chance to ask... and I've been real busy, too. And..." she faltered, her ears drooping a little as some of the enthusiasm was replaced by concern and a little bit of disappointment. "And... I'm not supposed to ask questions, 'cuz I'm a thrall, and you don't owe me anything because it's my job to just do what I'm told." She heaved a tiny sigh and looked up at him with a friendly smile. "So if you want to tell me stuff, I'd be real happy, but if I'm being annoying, just tell me, and I'll shut up. You don't even have to hit me, I promise I'll shut right up, right away. Yup."

She punctuated her ramble with an emphatic nod, hoping she had made it clear that she totally understood her position. Then she made a double-take and hurriedly added:

"Uh, but if you want to hit me, that's okay too, of course. I don't mind, really. I'm not complaining or anything."

Should we end it after your post?

Whoa... Udongo sure could be chatty when she wanted too. Bifrost didn't really mind, especially since she obviously knew her place. Many of his best sources were thralls who enjoyed talking when they were allowed to.

"Good," Bifrost said, when Udongo had finished, "Then that's settled. There will be no need for beatings at the moment. Follow me, Udongo."

He rarely beat up thralls, but he had always been told that you shouldn't let a thrall feel too safe in her position. If you let them know you didn't want to hit them they could get uppity and try to take advantage of it. His father had rarely hit his thralls, but when the situation called for it he had no trouble disciplining them. Bifrost had watched and learned. His mother had been more inclined to randomly dish out punishment to the thralls, but they all respected Father more for some reason. Bifrost didn't own any thralls, but he tried to emulate his father's behaviour when dealing with them.

Sounds good to me.

"Yes, sir."

Udongo beamed. Right about at this point, she more or less decided that she liked this Bifrost guy. He was probably a lot smarter than her, but he didn't make any fuzz over it, even when she knew she was acting pretty dumb. He didn't seem to want to get violent at the first given opportunity, unlike that Ruzanski, and many others she'd seen since she'd come here, and even though he hadn't promised her anything, she was still pretty sure he was the type who would talk to her a little more, and tell her more about this whole bard thing, if she just made sure to behave right.

As she fell into step behind the rainbow tip of the blue lion's tail, Udongo's face fell into a sober frown. Right, she had better behave right... And he'd asked her to clean up in his den. The brown lioness' ears lowered with worry. She sure hoped he didn't have anything breakable in there. She'd have to be careful, for sure... but not so much that she would be taking too much time.

Hum. This might turn out to be a tougher task than she had thought at first...
