Kasi watched her daughter approach with a detached look, her body aching and her mind racing. She shook her head in annoyance, trying to clear the muffled and rapid thoughts which filled her head. She offered her daughter a smile, affection showing in her eyes despite the tiredness that lingered there.
"Are you ready to begin?" She asked, voice firm. Her daughter was not a fighter, she had never wanted to be, but desperate times called for desperate measures and Safi had dropped her guarding duties to train with her mother. Surely, the firekin needed more fighters and Kasi was sure that her daughter would be a fantastic addition to the army.
Safi nodded as she approached her mother, offering her a small smile. "Of course, Mother," she agreed readily. The scratches on her side still irritated, but they no longer hurt. She was still learning how to fight, and so there was quite a few scratches and bruises which had come her way. She knew her mother did not do it on purpose, but if she had been in a real battle, she would be dead, not just bruised.
She pushed down the sadness of her great-uncles death and fell into a defensive pose.
"Your turn, mother," she said calmly.

Kasi fell into a defensive position, her own mirroring her daughter's, but she began to circle. Unable to stay still, her eyes narrowed in concentration.
"No, no daughter," she corrected. "You are the learner. You should attack first." It wasn't being polite, it was training. Safi could not always give the first attack to her opponent, she couldn't afford to. There was a chance that giving away that first attack could mean death, and Kasi would not lose her daughter.

There was a reason that Safi had not followed her mother into fighting when she was younger, why she had apprenticed under her father and become a guard instead. She was not always keen for a fight, and today she wasn't able to get her head into it. Not against her mother, not when she could see the tiredness in her eyes, and the wince in her face when she stepped too heavily on her front right paw, the one she had twisted yesterday in a duel similar to this.
Safi shook her head. "Age before beauty," she prompted, unable to summon the desire to attack her own mother, even in a mock battle in the duelling grounds.
