Being punished put Huo in a sour mood.

Maipe always got him in trouble, so Huo was quite constantly in a sour mood. Today, after breakfast, he had been unable to find her. It was unfortunate, because he was going to give her quite the speech. He had it all planned out, and he was quite certain she would be shaking on her little fuzzy paws after he was done with it.

Though in reality, Huo was not that far from his den--his mother would have snagged him and drug him back inside by now--the white Firekin felt like he was miles and miles away. To him, he had successfully snuck away and was now on his own, ready to be an impressive Firekin.

Feeling energy welling up inside of him at the idea, he let out a large snarl an leaped at twig jerking out of the sand, swiping at the accosting plant-life.

There was always a silver lining.

In Tundu's case, his mother's lack of love for him meant he could generally wander as far as he wished, as long as no one else bothered to interfere. So he spent his days wandering about. At least he was clever enough not to go to the open desert.

Right now he just so happened to be walking by where Huo was. When he spotted the other cub, who as all the right colors for a proper Firekin, Tundu was tempted to not-so-inconspicuously change his route, because he didn't want to deal with the privileged cubs today. But stubbornness won over, and he decided he wasn't going to hide like a rat form this other cub!

He was passing behind Huo when the other cub pounced at a twig, and couldn't hold back a derisive snort, because Tundu was an unhappy little cub.

Huo barely heard the snort. No, he was much too focused on his twig. The young cub grabbed it with his teeth and tugged with great force. Mouth still on it, he rotated his back feet around until his head was facing the opposite direction.

That was when he saw Tundu's creme-colored feet and followed it up to the male's reddish back patches.

For a moment, Huo was in a state of debate. To continue killing his victim, or find a new sort of game. Carefully, he let go of the twig. His sister might laugh at him for something like this, so he narrowed his eyes at Tundu.

"Who are you?" he asked. Huo had not seen this cub before! It was not a family member and it didn't look like a Firekin should.

He had no idea why he lingered long enough to end up caught by the other cub. To Tundu, being spotted at this point was just as good as being caught, anyways. Because now he had to engage this cub, or something.

"What's it matter to you?" He replied, the very epitome of cub bravado. In other words, not at all a very impressive display. He often answered like that, though Tundu might be more inclined to sparing bigger lions some of his cheek. He wasn't a total idiot.

Still, even though he didn't seem eager to stay and chat with Huo, Tundu completely failed to exercise his ability to just walk away right then, and hung around.

Given how polite and kind the majority of his family was, the last thing Huo expected from another soul was great bravado. The one exception to this fact was a hated rival, and so the tone made Huo's fur bristle.

"I want to know," he puffed out as though this were the answer to the entire question.

"Who are you," he repeated, the cub's voice much more firm. As if offended by the lack of split-second response, he added, "You're not even Firekin, are you!" It was a strong accusation; a very strong one indeed.

Tundu rolled his eyes. Spoiled cub! "You can't always get what you want." He chided irritably, a rule he knew very well. In fact, Tundu barely ever got anything he wanted.

The accusation made his fur bristle, and for a while there it looked like he might charge at Huo right then. But Tundu knew next to nothing about fighting. He didn't even play with his siblings. So he forced himself to deal with it another way. "No, I'm not. I don't want to be a stinking Firekin anyways!"

It was what he wanted the most. If he were Firekin, everything would be better.

"I can't wait until I'm old enough to be free from this place!"

For some reason, this twitched a terrible nerve in Huo.

He hopped on his front feet, chest puffed to maximum size. His brows had furrowed as tightly on his face as was possible and he let a large puff of breath travel towards the brown cub.

"Yeah?" he shouted back. This seemed to be the appropriate response to being yelled at.

"And where would you go?" The cub had heard his mother and some of the other lions say this when they threatened running away from home.
