Quinlan was sure he could come up with some better tricks. Big, grand shows to amaze the masses- things the creatures of the world only thought possible through the use of magic. Real magic, like from the Gods. He could make the whole of the rogue lands aware of his prowess with illusions. Instead, he found himself once again playing around with little tricks- things that could be considered nothing more than a way to pass the time.
But he enjoyed them.
He had a red flower sitting in front of him, poking up from the otherwise barren earth with life and color. The only thing, himself notwithstanding, to not be a shade of gloomy brown. He hovered his paw over the flower, plucking it from the ground and raising it up to give it a look. Then, with a swift motion, he turned his paw over, turning it back without wasting too much time to once again look at the flower. But it wasn't the red flower he had been holding that he was looking at- it was a butterfly sitting on top of his pad, flapping its wings slowly without flying away from his grasp.
Smiling, he watched the butterfly, before heaving a sigh. Maybe he only liked doing the little tricks because they were so much easier to think about. His mind constantly boggled over the bigger illusions- there were so many details to work through. Every time he felt he had finally managed to think his way over one hurdle, he found himself in front of an even taller wall. A never-ending uphill battle. Was the payoff going to be worth it? Would the lions and other animals of the lands even care?
Magic wasn't the only mysterious thing to take into consideration.

Quinlan had not been expecting company, and found himself rather surprised to see a female lion suddenly beside him, looking at the butterfly like she had never seen one before. He was too stunned to do anything but watch as she touched his paw, observing the butterfly resting on it very keenly. The butterfly flickered its wings and took flight, flapping away silently. It didn't get too far, though, landing on Quinlan's forehead for a rest.
The male lion didn't seem to mind the butterfly hovering over his right eye, his focus on the female.
"Haha, did you see my trick?" He asked, though he wasn't sure she would be able to understand him. If he had been paying attention right, she hadn't used a language he was familiar with right then. Did she knew the common tongue?
"It's magic," he offered anyway, "magic!"

Butterflies were nothing new to Kawasemi. They flew in swarms through the tropical oasis she hailed from, with some growing as big as birds! However, a butterfly appearing in the blink of an eye, as if it had been manifested from nothing but air was an entirely new concept all together! With her cool silver eyes still wide in disbelief, she watched the insect take flight at her nuisance nudging. Fluttering barely a few inches before it rested upon the dark lion's head, causing Kawa to giddily wiggle in place. That sealed it! Id'r saer! Id'r saerrirr saer!
Chirping like an excited cub she didn't seem to acknowledge his questions, though one particular word clearly caught her attention. Head canting gently to one side as she attempted to mimic the foreign syllables, Mmaaa..jik?
It had a nice feel to it, not so different from her own language, though she wasn't entirely sure what it was. His name maybe? That was usually the first thing strangers out here in the dry lands tried to teach her.
It's real! It's really real!

He was excited to see that she had acknowledged the most important word he had offered her, and had even tried to say it. He didn't know if she had connected it with the illusion, or if she thought it was his name or something along those lines, but he was still excited to hear her almost say it. Clearly there was a very strong difference of language between them, something he had never encountered before. That alone made her very interesting to him.
He liked learning about new things. He was so curious to find out what she was saying to him! If only his magic were real- that he could translate what she was telling him with a simple spell.
Wouldn't that make things easy!
"Magic! Yes!" He raised a paw, as though telling her to wait, and nestled himself down against the ground, perched as he looked at a patch of ground sitting between them, barren and empty. He places his paw over the ground, patting it twice before raising his paw again. Nothing had changed. Smiling, he looked at the female, waving his paws and wiggling the digits to show there was nothing there, before hitting the ground a third time. This time, when he moved his paw away, a flower poked up from a crack in the ground, where he had placed it very skillfully, to look as though it had always been growing there.
"Magic!" He laughed.

He was happy she seemed to understand that what he was doing was called magic. More than that, though, he was happy she seemed to enjoy his tricks. It made his heart soar to see others having as much fun with his illusions as him. Heck, maybe she enjoyed it more than he did! His trick had produced such a shocked look on her that he couldn't help but laugh merrily along with her.
This was a lot of fun, even if they couldn't really understand one another. They didn't need to! They both understood magic.
Then she stopped her dancing around him and looked at him with an expression that caught him by surprise, his own smile melting away as he tilted his head to one side.
"Uhh.... I don't know... what you're asking..." he offered awkwardly, not even completely certain it was a question at all. It seemed to have the inflection of a question, but had he done something wrong? Maybe she wanted to know his name? He pointed at himself with a claw, offering her a smile.
"Quinlan," he said definitively, hoping he had it right.
