Seriously.
It's getting tiresome quoting people just to say how awesome their comment was.

Gaia needs moar social media tools, yo.

I think Gaia should devolve into a BBS.

Just one landing page with a long list of forums and tons of topics?

Yeah. I did prefer Gaia before all these games and MMOs and cash shop and other money-grabbing BS.

And I can see how the gold system does lend itself to pointless spamming...

But if you want a regular old BBS.... find one! 'Hate Forums' was a fun little community before I found Gaia.

Gaia still reminds me of a BBS. Total random anonymous interactions of every type. Apparently it also has bells and whistles beyond the Avatar system. I'm tired of bells and whistles. I have a whole 'nother device for bells and whistles.

BBS stands for Bulletin Board System. They were all that was the Internet (as far as civilians outside a select few who were granted access to the NSFnet were concerned) before the invention of the World Wide Web. You had to dial their numbers directly using a modem and the numbers were traded amongst friends, listed in BBS magazines or posted on other BBSes. There's a documentary series about it if you're interested.

Professor Charles Severance of The University of Michigan teaches a fantastic course on the history of the internet and you can take it for free at coursera.org. I've taken the course once already and will problem take it again this coming fall.

If you're a visual learner than Coursera might be a great website for you. It offers full college classes in the form of videos and message boards (hey! kinda like Gaia!) but sometimes a little reading is required.
