Oh boy. This was awkward. Tikahn knew he wasn't that great of a fisher - it was why he wasn't one in the first place - so he had never intended on joining the little game Elsa had put forth to the pride. The furs looked very nice, but in all honesty, he didn't really need them. The cold was worse for others than for he, and he could make do without fuzzy prizes. Still, he had wanted to show a bit of support to his 'friend', so he had shown up to the little announcement. Of course Ezen had been there as well, silently watching from the crowd. Their eyes had met and the larger lion had raised a brow, nodding to the lake while flexing his claws. Tikahn knew a challenge when he saw it and, as much as he wanted to say no, he had nodded weakly. This was his chance to prove to Ezen that he wasn't some weak, useless lion that was hanging around the queen. He could do it!

So here he was, staring at the lake, an unsure look on his face. He could see fish swimming around under the ice - being out on it was terrifying enough thanks to the warmer weather, but the bigger fish weren't close to shore at all - but he had no idea how to go about getting one other than sticking his paw into the fishing holes that were opened up by the frequent fishers. He glanced over at Ezen and was pleased to find that the larger, heavier lion was also looking a bit unsure. The ice was groaning under his weight and little cracks appeared here and then when he stepped on a soft spot.

"So...you sure you wanna do this?" Tikahn asked with a weak laugh. "I mean, the ice can barely hold you, so-"

"Yes," Ezen said firmly, glaring at Tikahn. This was a test, after all, one that he had issued. If he backed down because the ice was breaking, that would be a loss in his book. And he would not lose to this scrawny lion. He had to test him to see if he was truly worthy of Elsa's affection and, while fishing wasn't his own forte, it was something. "You heard the rules," he added as he moved to an open hole. "Five fish. The best ones win."

He didn't waste any time after that, his huge paw diving into the water. He leaned down so he was nearly sticking his whole arm in the water and felt his claws catch something. He pulled up sharply and, attached to his paw, was a decently sized fish. Tikahn's eyes widened at the prize, because rather than the blues or greys he was used to seeing, this fish was bright orange and had black and white spots on it. He stared first in amazement, then in discouragement. How was he supposed to catch something like that?

Ezen smirked as he set the fish aside. Not a bad start if he did say so himself! He set to work again, not wanting to let up the pace. He had fish to catch and little lions to beat.

Tikahn let out a slow breath as Ezen returned to the hole he had used previously. The smaller lion wiggled his toes before dipping his paw into the chilly water. He shivered just a bit but leaned down, trying to get a bit deeper than just the surface. There had to be something down here...oh! Oh, there! He pulled up sharply and a decent sized fish came out with his paw, flopping on the ice, mouth working for air that would never come. Smiling, he looked over to Ezen to see if he had noticed. The other lion's paw was down in the water again and there were now two fish beside the icy male, the strange colored one and another similar to Tikahn's own.

Tikahn felt his ears droop as he turned back to his hole. Great...he had some ground to cover. Dipping his paw in again, he felt something swim by his toes almost instantly, so he swiped and caught it by the tail. After lifting it out of the water, however, he found it to be hardly worth eating. It was so tiny and transparent he could see its little bones and organs! Feeling a bit badly, he set it with his other 'prize' and continued to fish around.

Ezen's luck had run out with the second decent fish. For a while there was nothing near his paw, so he switched holes. There were lots of little fish here but they were too fast for his movements, which was probably just as good. He didn't want little fish, he wanted big ones! Trying a third hole, he swiped quickly and brought his paw up, disappointed to find a tiny fish there. He tossed it in the direction of his other two and went back to work.

A half hour or so passed before Ezen sat back, glaring at his pile. The first two fish were fine specimen, but the last three he had grabbed didn't even equal the length of the second fish he'd pulled. Oh well...that first one was a winner for sure. He looked over at Tikahn who wasn't doing much better, which made him smirk. One decent fish and three tiny ones. He padded over to the other lion, watching him tremble as the ice cracked under their paws, the joined weight making the whole area groan.

"Well then? What's your last fish?" he asked. Tikahn swallowed thickly and closed his eyes, swiping his paw once more time. Ah, there! He yanked and tossed his fish onto the ice, scared to open his eyes. He heard Ezen make a soft 'tsk' noise and, curious, finally peeked. His heart sank at what he saw. It was a nice fish, to be sure, but not nearly as nice as Ezen's first grab. The winner was clear, if close.

"Ah...good job," he said softly to Ezen, to looked at the male in surprise. He was congratulating him? The larger lion stood in place, taken aback by the sportsmanlike conduct. Unsure of what to do, he gave a 'hmph' and scooped up his fish in his mouth to take them back to the island, leaving Tikahn alone. The smaller male sighed softly before picking up his catch, hoping it would at least feed a few hungry mouths later in the winter.
