"Rejoice, for the end is nigh! Repent, for the Great Lion's back is to the pride!" the black lioness moved through the pride, calling out her joyous discovery. Every lion she came near was someone who had to hear the word, every person someone who needed to know! It didn't matter to her that few wanted to listen, it mattered even less that she looked like she'd completely forgotten how to groom herself. In fact, she'd begun acquiring adornments here and there - mostly vertebrae. The small ones she had slipped onto her toes, making her every step clack against any rocks. The larger ones had been slipped onto her tail. Between those, her scruffy fur, and wide open eyes, it was hardly surprising that even Nyeusi's closest relatives seemed to be avoiding her.

Though he was a guard and still technically had a job to do, Vesper was feeling rather useless lately. They had failed to do anything effective during the attacks on the King and Queen, and now with Shangyue in charge, the Royal Guards seemed to be doing the majority of the work. Except they were as focused inside the pride as out.
By some strange coincidence, he had yet to spot his cousin in her current state and as she pursued her current goal-- but that was about to change. He was wandering around, trying to convince himself this counted as being on patrol.. and he was drawn to a commotion that seemed to be moving to and fro.. and always driving others away.
When he spotted Nyeusi, nobody else was around and he was so surprised, he could only stop and stare.

It didn't matter to Nyeusi that people were pulling away from her with expressions ranging from disgust to confusion, to amusement and everything in between. If one lion left, she simply moved on to the next.
Then she unexpectedly ran out of lions. This brought the black female up short for a moment and she looked around. Aha! A white male with purple wing markings. He was vaguely familiar, so he'd been around for a while. Maybe his whole life. Whatever. Nyeusi wasn't someone who made it a point to know every Mwezi member by name and face, so there were a lot of people she barely even knew by sight. This was one of those.
"Have you heard?" she demanded, going straight up to the male. "Have you heard the Word?" Blue eyes shone, but probably not with sanity.

Vesper, on the other paw, knew exactly who he was looking at.. kind of. He knew who her parents were and how the two of them were related, though he couldn't remember her name- if he had even ever known it. That, aside from the obligation felt due to the commotion, was enough to keep him standing there even as she walked right up to him.
"What?"
He'd have bet his next meal this wasn't going to be something that made any sense. But he didn't know what to do in a situation like this- what was happening exactly?

"The Word!" Nyeusi repeated, waving one bone-clad paw in his face for emphasis. "It is our hope, our desire, our salvation!" she informed the older lion.
It was clear to the her that the white male had not heard the Word at all. But that was okay. She'd be happy to explain it to him. After all, he was still standing here, wasn't he? And if the expression on his face wasn't joy, it wasn't any form of rejection and that was good enough for her.
"Rejoice, for the end is nigh!" she cried, repeating the mantra she'd created. "Repent, for the Great Lion's back is to the pride!"

He remained skeptical even as Nyeusi raved about their salvation, though he could tell simply standing there and listening to her was encouraging her and he wasn't sure that was a good thing at all. When she finally got to her point, he was surprised- and took a small step back. He raised an eyebrow, beginning to really understand why everybody was trying to get away from her. "W-what makes you say that?"

"The Great Lion has turned His back on the King, and thus on the pride," the lioness answered promptly. She even managed to sound saner when she said it, which was saying something. "The King thought to make the Great Lion bend to his will by subverting the slaves of the low class, but the Great Lion is beyond all that. He will not aid the pride while the usurper reigns, and things will get worse until the King is dethroned. The end is nigh!"
As Nyeusi's explanation wound down, her tone gradually ramped up the chaos and insanity until she was shouting into the white lion's face.

Well, it wasn't exactly surprising to hear someone say it.. but her method of saying it was something else. And the degree to which she took it was rather intense and very dangerous. It was extremely tempting to just smile, nod and hurry away- especially when she was shouting.
"You can't go around shouting things like that!" he exclaimed, wishing he had the nerve to argue bu not exactly optimistic about what the future held for the pride under Shangyue either. The only certain thing was that she could get into a lot of trouble this way.
Not that arguing loudly was going to do him any favors unless he supported the King, and he wasn't intent on doing that. Yet, he couldn't help but raise his own voice.

"But it's the Truth!" the female shouted right back, blue eyes wide as she took another step towards the white lion to stand right in in his face. "You cannot deny the Truth, just as the King cannot ignore it, no matter how much he'd like to!" she informed him loudly.
"This is the Word! We must spread it to the whole of the pride!" Nyeusi declared, taking a step back again and waving her paw for emphasis. "Think of how many live here, and how many have yet to be freed by hearing the Word!" And with someone to help her, things would go much more quickly and they could be rid of Shangyue that much sooner.

Well, arguing was making her louder and more aggressive. The next obvious step was to try the opposite approach.. but was there was a way to do it that might actually minimize the damage to be done? Was there any way to do that?
Stunned, he stood there silent and staring far too long.
"Uh," he stammered, "O..k?"
Not quite what he was aiming for but he got something out. That was, at least, slightly less awkward than silence.

"Wonderful!" Nyeusi beamed a smile that would have been a lot more attractive if its wearer had paid any attention to her appearance. As things stood, it served to further emphasize that she might not be entirely present in reality as the male knew it.
Turning so that the white lion was at her side, leaning on him slightly, and curling her tail around him, the black lioness began to forcefully steer her newfound comrade to the next nearest lion.
"We'll spread the Word to the entire pride! To the world! From now until the King is King no longer!"

It struck him far too late that he had sad exactly the wrong thing and she was at his side, steering him off to continue this dangerous endeavor against the rule of the murderous king that currently ruled over them. He was clearly the first person to actually listen to her and not just walk off, and he was already filled with regret.
His only hope was that her apparent insanity and his own apparent reluctance would spare them both when the king inevitably found out that there was a lunatic (now a pair of them) spreading crazy rumors- if you could even call this a rumor.
"Oh God," he muttered, glancing up at the sky but not fighting back as she pushed him along to find some other poor soul too kind to just walk away.
Fin!
