He was just completely confused. Oh sure, sometimes patrols were done in pairs, but mixing a Guard and a Royal Guard? 'Varinen was pretty sure that hadn't happened yet. And frankly, even if he was proud that he had a real status in the pride, he was not up to spending an extended period of time in the company of a single lion who'd always had that kind of status.
"Yeah, I'll just...do that. Thing," he replied lamely, turning to patrol in the opposite direction. Since he was actually out here to do that. But no one had said anything about patrolling with someone else, much less Machholz. The male thought, though he couldn't be certain, that that was the type of thing someone would have mentioned at the start of his shift.
He fled to his duties before the starry lioness could say anything else confusing.
