It was freezing. Snow covered her legs and brushed against her belly. More of the stuff fell upon her head and back. She was freezing. The blue cub paused and glanced at her siblings with her ice blue eyes. Rin Kokoro shivered violently then resumed her slugging through the snow with her five siblings.

She couldn’t remember much at this point. It was all a blur. She couldn’t remember whose idea it has been to go looking for their mother after she had failed to show for several days. Hunger had finally driven the group to go looking. The weather had been fine at first but had quickly turned cold. It had been fun and fine when the snow started. They had played and frolicked for hours then it had gotten colder and they remembered their hunger. By this time they were well lost. They didn’t have any place to curl up from the storm and had to trudge on.

Why had their mother left them? Why hadn’t she come back? These questions burned deep into the young cub’s soul. If she hadn’t been so numbed, she’d almost be on the verge of hating her mother. As it was it felt as though the cold was invading more than just her body. Her eyes drooped. All she wanted to do was lay down in the snow. Rin staggered a few steps and sank up to her chin. She sighed and closed her eyes. Just for a moment.

Aquapuga was out on patrol because that was what he did when he wasn't being a personal shadow for the queen. He believed the safety of the whole pride was important too, since it was important to Elsa. He was doing a lot of that lately, calling things important just because they mattered to Elsa. This patrol duty was turning out to be very cold and boring so far. He would have to go out just as fresh snow started to fall. He did not mind snow so much these days, but if not for the cloak he had been given, he would be freezing his leopon tail off out here! The wind blowing did not help to make him any warmer that was for sure. Ah well, as long as he kept moving and did not stay out longer than necessary for his duty, he would be fine.

Aquapuga squinted his eyes, seeing some things small moving in the distance and wondering what could possibly be out of it's den in a snowstorm. Prey stayed inside in this kind of weather, but they had to be something living. He moved in the direction of the small whatevers to investigate. He was a guard, so whatever was out there was his job to look into and report to the pride. As he got closer, his mind froze a moment. His eyes could not be showing him what he thought they were. Lion cubs? Out here, on their own? It was hard at first to count all of them, the blue and purple ones stuck out most, but there were some mostly white ones too. Six cubs.

The leopon did not hesitate to pull off his cloak and make it into a sling. He loaded cubs into it and looked down at the blue one that looked almost asleep. That was not good. They all looked starved and very tired. "Wake up little one." He licked the blue cub's face before picking her up and putting her with her siblings in the makeshift sling. He double checked that the end of the cloak was tucked up into the clasp properly and started for home. Someone else could check for the mother, he had to get the cubs to safety. If they had been full grown lions, he might have left them, but not the cubs. He kept checking the blue girl with the white tipped mane and tail to make sure she was not asleep. The last thing they needed was to go to sleep when they were too cold.

She was finally comfortable. Her and her siblings were back in their den with a faceless lioness curled around them. They were warm and she thought she smelled milk in the air. This is perfect, the little cub thought. Everything was once again as it should.... A warm tongue came out of nowhere and went across her face. Rin pulled back and grumbled. As if that hadn't been enough, she was jarred out of her dream when someone picked her up.

The young cub cracked open an eye. She started shivering again, realizing how cold she felt. What had happened? How long had she been asleep? She had only meant to rest a moment. And who was that? Rin scowled at the funny looking creature that had woken her up. It wasn't very effective in her current state. He wasn't their mom, but she couldn't figure out why he was doing what he was doing.
