How could she trick them. How did they always know? What did this have to do with alchemy!
"Fear," they demanded.
She looked up, hope scrawled across her features. "Yes! She said, beginning to scramble with her ingredients. "Yes, yes, yes! I have it! I'll put something together. Just wait!"
She became a tornado of preparing, simmering, and stirring, until she had crafted a perfect row of fear-stuffed pastries, one for each of the council, and set them out for anxious approval.
One of them took one polite bite, then spat it out.
"If only," they mourned, "it had some chocolate. I'm sorry. But we just can't let anyone of this caliber through." They whispered, "not without the chocolate."
And the entire table left. Again.
