A dark lioness stood with her muzzle in the air, eyes closed, jaws slightly parted to draw the scents in the air around her over her tongue. She relished the breeze that ruffled her fur, and the sun that warmed her pelt and the pelts of the other lions that accompanied her. I'm finally here.

Bryndis turned to see her sister Svana and her Reavers fanned out around her, and her heart swelled. All her life, the ebony lioness had been conflicted about whether or not she wanted to become a Reaver - she had trained hard to learn combat techniques, and her demeanor had always been that of a warrior; still, something had held her back from making an absolute decision. Now, whatever had caused her doubt was suddenly gone, and she had humbly asked her sister to help her in achieving her goal of becoming a Reaver.

She glanced over at Svana and their eyes met. Bryndis dipped her head in immeasurable affection and gratitude before returning to the task at hand. Pulling the air over her scent glands once again, and deciding that - as of yet - nothing of interest was nearby, Bryndis padded forward and continued searching for a bounty.

I don't really know how these usually go - the ones I read didn't really have much going on (one was actually just two characters discussing having sex, which was odd) but I'm going to throw in my leopard and have Bryndis rob her of a kill and her prized vulture skull. She's kind of a coward but, hey. A fight's a fight.

Svana had been quick to spring into action when her sister had finally expressed an interest in becoming a reaver, gathering up several of her reavers and chivvying them into an impromptu raid. Now they were all some distance from the pride boarder, gathered in a loose group while they waited for one of the scouting birds Svana had been trying to train to return with news. Her experiment with the flying beasts had been a little hit and miss, but it was at last showing some success, though she rather suspected she would need to select just one or two birds and bond them like she had with the snake Sipho. Though that had been something of an accident.

Sipho was safely tucked up back home though and Svana stood with her head tossed back, eagerly scanning the skies above. If no birds returned however she still had plan of options, this was just a chance to test out how the feathery messengers were performing.

Glancing across at her sister she caught the dark lioness's gaze and grinned. Well, it seemed the birds hadn't found anything yet so... "Move out!" She called, already setting out once again, following the almost invisible rogue trail she had spotted on a previous Viking. Behind her, her experienced reavers settled into their assigned formation, the scouts moving perpendicular to the main group in order to maximise the chance to scenting a fresh trail. Bryn herself, Svana would keep close, for this was her first Viking and the red Captain never took unnessassary risks with a new lion. This was for Bryn to learn the ropes, she would likely take a more active role as she attended more and more raid parties,

Sounds good!!! And Vikings can be almost anything, since it's usually just a moment of time within the larger situation.

Bryndis had been a little surprised to see birds at the beginning of the outing, but when her sister explained their presence, she was intrigued. As she watched the lookouts take to the air and slowly shrink into the distance, she had entertained the notion of catching an avian of her own. That is, if her sister's tests proved successful.

Back to the matter at hand, Bryn watched her sister scanning the skies and padded forward with the rest of the group as the order to advance was called. Though she'd never admit it aloud, Bryn was glad that her sister insisted on keeping her close; even though she had a clear picture of the Reaver she wanted to be, it was her first time viking after all, and she needed to learn the ropes. Besides, she thought to herself, I wouldn't want to be given too much freedom and end up messing things up.

As the troupe strode onward, Bryn was careful to watch her fellows and take hints from what they did. She began to notice more acutely the details that led a Reaver on an expedition and observe the subtle mannerisms of her companions. She made mental notes to adjust her techniques and ensure she practiced hard. She had already practiced fighting, stalking, scenting, and the likes, but nothing compared to being in the field and seeing what really worked.

As they plodded forward, Bryn's ears flicked; something seemed different. Pausing, she did a quick examination of her surroundings and, when nothing looked out of place, inhaled deeply to sniff out potential concerns. There it is. She trotted over to her sister and leaned in to whisper her findings, just in case she was wrong.

"Captain - I can smell something; feline, and it seems fresher than the other scents." Is it just me? she added silently. Looking to her sister for direction, Bryn waited apprehensively to see if Svana agreed.

Svana had been keeping one eye on the trail up ahead and one on the skies above, still hoping one of her feathered scouts would return. She had discovered that a Captain's role was vastly different to the one a reaver held. She did not scout, or scent the air so much as she made sure the rest of the party did so. She relied on them to be her eyes and ears, to find possible targets while she kept the band together and in a cohesive formation. She was the one that decided which leads to follow and which to leave for another day. It was far less exciting and far more work than she had ever assumed, but she wouldn't ever give up her job. Her reavers were her pride and joy. The way they worked together so smoothly, looked to her for decisions and guidance but were perfectly capable of making up their own minds and acting without an order from her if necessary. They were an elite team and she couldn't be prouder.

As her sister came over she turned, grinning broadly. The rush of a viking running through her blood, making her heart thump with power and anticipation. She loved this, she had been made for this. Listening attentively she nodded at Bryndis. "Show me." Glancing over at Asher, her Second-in-Command, to take the lead, she moved to follow her sibling to where Bryn had discovered the scent. After checking the area and scenting the air she nodded again. "Good call." Glancing at the rest of the party she motioned with a distinctive tail-flick and the other members all altered their path, turning to strike out on this new trail. Off to one side Rook, the all-black male reaver who rarely spoke and almost never socialised, could be seen flittering through the shadows, barely more than an insubstantial shadow himself.

Bryn led Svana back to where she had originally detected the trail; her paws pricked with anticipation, and her pelt bristled slightly with a mixture of excitement and nerves. While she was certain now that the scent was not imagined, her fear remained; her sister could still decide that it wasn't worth the time following it.

Bryn positively glowed at Svana's commendation, but she was sure to maintain a cool exterior. No point celebrating yet; this may not pan out. Even as she asserted the thought, she could tell that this creature had some reason to avoid them; the scent trail indicated that the feline had been walking toward them head-on, but had stopped and suddenly taken a sharp turn to head perpendicularly away from the party. Following a trail this fresh only became easier the longer they stayed on it, and by now Bryn had discerned that their quarry was a leopard based on the scents of random Thralls. This being her first time outside of the pride's lands, this would be her first encounter with a leopard - or any creature - that was not subservient to her or her comrades. A twinge of anxiety threatened to flare up, but Bryn reassured herself that, even in the event that this creature was aggressive, she had trained hard and knew her techniques well. Plus, the "training" between Freeborns and Reavers was hardly gentle.

As the scent grew so strong that the leopard should have been clear in front of them, a cluster of rocks came into view off to the right, with a kenkiliba shrub to the left - small-ish, but large enough to hide in. Bryn slowed to a halt and looked to her captain for guidance. Will we be searching the hiding spots? How will we split up to search? Bryn kept the questions to herself. The questions were purely curiosity based, but she felt it might be disrespectful to both her sister and her captain to so boldly ask them.
