Was he the only one left? The colony had sent out several of their best Sentinels after their rogue brethren when he'd fnally escaped the pit meant to hold him until his inevitable end. The irony of the situation was not beyond Kiwara Chuma's grasp. The same leaders who had wanted to toss the deviant Sentinel out into the wilderness where he could be someone else's problem were now hellbound and determined to see him back where they could keep a close watch over him. Not because they thought him of any use to them or anything. Oh no. They had given up on that idea long ago, but they feared him and what he was capable of.

They wouldn't be satisfied until they saw him dead with their own eyes.

Unfortunately, Kiwara hadn't seen hide nor hair of their target or any of the trackers he'd left with at the start of the hunt. They had split off in a broadening expanse the further they traveled from their home territory, trying to cover as much ground as possible, but amidst the foliage he was at the advantage.

Shouts of surprise—and then pain—erupted first to his left side where a flock of birds burst through the canopy with noisy calls. Wara had been forced to double back toward the disruption, scrambling across a bridge of several entangled tree limbs. As quickly as the sounds of struggle had reached his ears, they faded to a deathly silence even faster. Damnit!

Creamy color ears strained to listen, pricked attentively forward and quivering. Kiwara was certain he could hear the quiet movement of footsteps on the jungle floor. Creeping into position to pounce when his prey slunk by blow. Adrenaline ran high in his veins, making his gold inscribed pelt twitch. Just a little bit closer. Any second and....

A flash of a dark hoof and the long slim leg of a bushbuck popping out of the thick underbrush made the skilled hunter release the breath he'd been holding in a sigh of exasperation. s**t.. I thought that was--

The blow that blindsided him in the ribs could have been from a charging elephant for all the wind it knocked out of Wara, sending him flying from the safety of the branches to the forest floor with a hard thud. He'd never seen it coming.

The Grudge.

They would send others after him, he knew. The fear they felt when they looked at him was visible in their eyes. So strong he could smell it. How amusing that they invited their own doom, not knowing that it was their terror for the monster they had created that sustained it. The other Sentinels, leopards bred specifically to be the colony's protectors, were amongst the trees with him now. Their heavy-footed steps rustling noisily through the branches overhead. Brave. Reckless. Stupid.

There was one amongst them though, one the Chuma considered almost equal and had since their days together in training as cubs. Kiwara Chuma. He had always regarded the mossy male differently than others. With caution and respect, but never fear. Even now Polzuchii Chuma could pick out his trail through the jungle amidst the group barreling forward in search of the escapee. The only real potential for danger if he was caught. Yet for that very reason, Zuchii longed to see the leopard, on his terms of course.

Both ears flicked forward, attention drawn suddenly to the underbelly of a Chuma running right over his head, oblivious to the threat lurking camouflaged below. Breath misted hot against the inside of the bone mask that muzzled him, designed by the colony's most talented crafter in a hope to end the reign of terror his wicked jaws had committed. It was believed that this cage gave them power over him, that Zuchii was somehow less capable as a Sentinel because of it. How easily they forgot the killing prowess that had been the catalyst of this entire disaster.

Pain, sharp and sudden, echoed through the trees. Slithering between the crowded branches and clusters of foliage to grab Kiwara's attention. Yet it was only a means to alert his chivalrous brother to his potential whereabouts. A better trap yet to be lain.

Staring at the lifeless body beneath his heavy paw, where unsheathed claws sank into flesh that was surprisingly delicate, Polzuchii Chuma could only think how pitiful it was. They were one and the same, but that did not make all Chuma equal. Some had simply been born better. Eying a bushbuck that had been disturbed by the birds taking flight in response to the startlingly abrupt death cry, Polzuchii circled around it from above. This was his trap. Following it's fleet motions silently as it lead him directly toward the leopard he knew was approaching from the opposite direction, the malevolent shadow lay in wait for the perfect moment. Breath stilling in his chest, eyes nearly watering as they watched—unblinking—for the flash of gold. Wara was so close Zuchii could smell him. His muscles quivered until finally, without warning, he sprang, the full weight of his body crashing into the distracted Sentinel.

Though his claws scrambled for purchase and his body twisted, there so no relief for Kiwara from the onslaught of driving blows as his heavy body thudded against each branch that seemed to purposely stretch across his path to the ground. By the time he'd reached the jungle floor the fallen leaves, moss and other detritus was like a welcome cushion to his battered body. I've had better days. The thought crossed his mind with a low, aching groan. He had to get up, quickly, but his body wasn't quite yet ready to cooperate floundering uselessly like a newborn cub.

You fall like a rock. A voice, both muffled and amplified by the mask that contained the jaws their colony feared spoke from overhead. His tone both amused and disgusted at the same time. Polzuchii expected better of his brother.

We can't all be as perfect as you. Kiwara muttered as he finally picked himself up off the ground, his head craned to pick out the murderer from amidst the rest of the canopy.
