“Yes, it appears that your rival Darwin seemed to have-“
“Outta my way, I got a score to settle.” Allen said, shoving aside the recently defeated Lance.
He walked into an arena filled with guests, the stage black as the night with Darwin standing on the otherside. “Oh? You actually beat Lance?” Darwin sounded surprised as he stepped forward.
“Yeah, I did.” Allen said, gripping a Pokeball in his hand. Rabbitguy guy didn’t have the kind of relationship that Smaug had with him. If any Pokemon could be considered his starter, it’d be him. Was it wise to bring him? He beat a weakened Dragonair and a few others but…
“Well color me impressed. I honestly figured you ran back to Cinnabar to your parents. Did they even notice you were gone?” Darwin gave one of the cameramen a look with a sly grin, earning a laugh from the audience.
“I-“ Allen didn’t need to look at the reserved seating to know that they didn’t make it. Ever since he gave back the Aerodacytal they pushed on him, they were too insulted to reply to his calls. There was research to be done on fossils! They couldn’t make it to the other side of the country for a silly Pokemon battle.
“You should be relieved! Now at least they wouldn’t have wasted their time to see you-“
“Shut up! I’ve curb stomped all the Elite Four,” he said, gesturing to the four sitting to see who would be the reigning Champion ,”and now I’m gonna curb stomp you, you giant p***k!” Allen shouted, arms shaking as he sent out a Butterfree. Just this once, he’d like to earn a real victory. Two of his badges were given freely out of spite and pity. Their last battle, just handed to him. He even caught a legendary with a Master Ball even if he hadn’t used it yet! Allen wanted meaning and he grinned when Darwin flinched. The Sandslash was sent out and the battle for the title of Champion had begun.
“Psychic!” Allen barked as Smaug flew up into the air, sending a stream of psychokinetic energy at the little hedgehog from above.
“Poison Sting.” Darwin said smoothly. His Sandslash leaped skywards and curled into a ball as his spines began to glow purple. The Psychic was sliced clean like a hot knife and butter and the Sandslash rammed into the Butterfree.
Allen scowled. “Again, come on!”
Smaug flailed as he took a dive, the Sandslash falling with the intent of hitting it again. He flipped around and sent another blast, this time striking it back into the air. Flapping with everything he had, the Butterfree zoomed above the Sandslash and hit it with another Psychic, sending it to the ground. Done.
A sigh of relief left Allen as he refocused his attention to the recently sent out Alakazam. “Get in for a Toxic.”
Darwin yawned and gave his Alakazam a knowing glance. The Butterfree got up close and bit the Alakazam’s shoulder. “Grab it. Psybeam.”
The Alakazam grabbed Smaug and held him with both arms. “C’mon get free!” Allen shrieked. Oh no. Darwin stared him down as his Pokemon blasted Allen’s point blank.
Allen actually cried while his Pokemon received a blast of direct Psychic chi. No...
“C’mon really?" Darwin laughed "A Butterfree? You’ve gotta be joking, those things are really just for novelty. Toss it.” His Alakazam obeyed and tossed Smaug’s body over the edge of the arena. Allen stared, his hands shaking. This was his fault. He shouldn’t have-
“Uh, hello? You’re kinda just wasting everyone’s time. You forfeit yet?” Darwin asked as he stepped onto the main platform of the arena from his trainer’s post, arm outstretched to accept Allen’s defeat.
“Get back up there.”
“What?”
“I said: get back up there. The battle isn't done yet.” Allen said, staring coldly at his rival. He switched into Mary.
Once Darwin stepped back to his post, Allen looked at his Kangaskan “You know what to do,” The Normal type slammed her arms into the ground and took out a chunk of the earthy terrain. “,Rock Slide!”
“Psychic!”
The rock flew through the Psychic, though Mary was struck by the incoming attack. She fell, alive, but barely. The Alakazam got back up, bruised and ready to- whoops the Toxic got him.
“Tch, dumb luck. Exeggutor finish this one off.” Darwin said as he withdrew his Alakazam and sent out his Grass type.
“Mary, I-“
“Butterfree!” Smaug cried out as he flew back from below the platform, not giving the Exeggutor any space so as to bite it with another Toxic!
“Ref?!” Darwin looked up at a league representative for help, who couldn’t help but shrug.
“It never hit the floor, I saw it with my two eyes. League rules don’t state that a Pokemon must return to it’s ball for it to be counted as withdrawn from battle. It never hit the floor and your opponent switched Pokemon. Unless he intends to use his Kangaskhan?” Bruno stated. He gave the referee a glance, who nodded nervously and agreed with the Elite Four member.
“I don’t.” Nope, nope. He returned her- she was done battling.
“Hypnosis!”
“Hey! Hold on to it and don’t let go!”
A dirty sneak attack! Smaug gripped the Exeggutor as it flailed around, trying to get a move on the Butterfree. He jumped, he flailed, he even slammed his three heads on the floor to loosen the grip but it never worked. Smaug was going to stall until the Toxic ran it's course! “Stop, drop and roll! Then give it a Stomp!” Darwin ordered. “This’ll teach you.”
“Teach me what!? That you’re a jerk?!”
“That you should’ve stayed home!”
Falling to the ground, Darwin’s Exeggutor steamrolled Smaug to get him off. He got back up and stomped his wing.
“Free!” Smaug cried out, trying to fly up to no avail.
“Again!”
“Smaug use Psychic!”
Allen watched as his Butterfree caught the second stomp and blasted Darwin’s Exeggutor up into the air and he watched as it hit the ground with a thud. A knockout. “Oh thank god…” he returned his Pokemon. “You’re done for today.”
The trainer took a moment to breath. Smaug didn't die. He wasn't like Tom and Goodenuff. He made it.
“And you’re just done for.” Allen turned his attention back to Darwin as he sent out Rabbitguy, his Nidoking.
“Guy knocks out a few Pokemon and suddenly he thinks he’s something. You are nothing. Get it Ninetales!”
A Quick Attack.
“Wow that tickled him. Earthquake.”
“Go Magneton!”
“Earthquake.”
“…”
“Oh I’m sorry, did run out of dirty tricks?” Allen asked as he called back Rabbitguy and replaced him with his Venusaur: Toadplant.
“Na. My starter is just gonna wipe the floor with you like he did your Pikachu!” Darwin sweated with a feigned cocky laugh. This was over.
“Awesome. Sleep Powder.”
“What?!”
“Ya know, throw in a Leech Seed for good measure.”
“You’re an idiot!”
“Prepare the Solarbeam.” Allen pulled out a phone.
“What kinda trainer do you think you are?! You don’t even take this seriously!”
“I’m the kind of trainer that just beat you. Fire!” Allen shouted, taking a selfie as the sleeping Vaporeon was Solarbeamed out of the arena.
The crowd let up an uproar as Allen finally let himself grin. This was it.
“Excuse me, Champion? It’s time we recorded your progress.” Lance said after pulling Allen aside. The battle was won and it was time for him to be remembered in glory.
“Um, yeah. Can you just give me a moment?”
“Well, you really should-“
“Yeah thanks.” He waved off the dragon master and walked to the center of the arena. He took out the Master Ball and sighed.
“I should have trusted them more. Thanks but…,” he took a pen and clicked the little black button on the underside of the Master Ball and let out Moltres. The arena went silent. The Champ had been blessed by the bird of victory? Well no wonder. The ball deactivated. “, I didn’t need you.”
“…”
“So um-“
The Moltres leaned forward and let the boy pet it. Then it flew off, maybe to a nice volcano this time. Too many trainers had seen it near Victory Road now. Then Darwin shouted.
“So you cheated?! You had a freaking legendary Pokemon this entire time?!”
“I never used it!”
“Nuh-uh! This ain’t a real loss then! This ain’t-!”
“Darwin. A Champion loses with grace, not whatever this is. I should know.” Professor Oak said coldly as he flew from air on a Fearow to the stadium. “It’s not the strength of the Pokemon that determines a victory. It’s the strength of the relationship between the Pokemon and their trainer. You’ve let me down.”
Darwin looked down and gave up. “Yes sir… Sorry Allen. Just… sorry.”
“Meanwhile you,” Oak turned and pointed to Allen “,you have grown up so much. I can hardly recognize the boy who was handed a spare Pikachu and then a Rattata because he couldn’t wait to go on an adventure.” The professor put his hand on Allen's shoulder.
“I’m proud of you Allen. It’s truly a shame that your parents never came today.”
“…”
“It’s not your fault.”
Allen looked away. “Can we just go heal my Pokemon?”
“Of course.”
The two of them walked past Darwin into a long golden walkway with a special healing machine at the end. “What happens after?”
“What do you mean Allen?”
“I don’t know… I only became a trainer because my parents didn’t think I was smart enough in school. I’ve kinda just rolled with the punches.”
“Well then they are fools Allen. You may not be book smart but…. you were clever enough to outwit a legend and the Pokemon League. You were kind enough to forge a bond so strong with your Pokemon they came out on top against all odds. It is absolutely marvelous.” The man said kindly. “Maybe explore the world, see what it has to offer a young trainer like yourself. Now… welcome to the Hall of Fame Allen, where the exploits of great trainers and their Pokemon and recorded and remembered. Welcome to the Hall of Fame, our new reigning Champion!”
