It was possibly just his imagination, but the carpet under his feet was starting to look slightly more worn than the surrounding area. He couldn't help it, needing to burn off the energy coursing through him but unwilling to leave their rooms, not even to go to a training area and spar. That would be too far, and while it was probable that the pumpkin nestled in the basket would take several more days until it was ready one could never be too sure.

He had checked. The research might point in a certain direction but early emergence out of a pumpkin had been recorded multiple times, though for foals the chance was remarkably low.

It was hardly likely that anything would happen to the basket or the pumpkin inside, but he still felt a small sense of dread when he looked at it. What if something happened and something flew across the room? Perhaps they had not taken enough precautions, and before he fully thought about it he was fetching cushions, creating a small barrier around the basket just in case something were to happen. Maybe he should have built something sturdier, but it was too late now.

His stomach growled loudly but he dismissed it without a thought. He could go much longer without Fear than this, it was a good test, really. "Neru, do you think it's too cold in here? Should I build up the fire?"

By contrast, Nergui seemed relatively calm about the whole thing. It seemed her guardian worries enough for the both of them, fussing and fretting while the priestess herself stood by and smiled. Further reassured that he would indeed make a wonderful father, not that she had ever had a doubt.

She watched him now as he paced, an old book laying open across her lap, and had to stifle a chuckle when yet another worry seemed to strike him, and he surrounded the basket resting on the floor with as many cushions has he could find. At a certain point she might have have tried assuring him that the babe was fine, but no matter, he worried regardless.

Her brows arched at the question. "It's already very warm in here my love." Warmer even than they usually kept it. "Why don't you come and sit with me?" And she'd pay the place beside her invitingly.

He could feel the amusement from her, in her voice and through her mind, and perhaps she had a point. It was almost difficult to sit himself down next to her, but he didn't completely relax, still leaning forward slightly to keep a good eye on the basket in case anything decided to move.

Surely their foal would emerge soon, and then there would be things to do, a child to fuss over. For now he should probably be resting and enjoying the peace while they had it. He covered Neru's hand with his own, peeking over to see what book she had before another thought crossed his mind.

"You don't think it's too warm in here, do you? Should i open the door to the balcony?

No sooner had he settled in beside her then she felt him tense again, ready to rise back to his feet to cross the room. She blinked up at him again, silvery brow arching as she gave his rough fingers a gentle squeeze. She was used to him worrying, but this was to a degree she'd not seen since she'd returned to him after her run in with the white haired hunter.

"I do not, but if you feel it needs to be opened," she offered gently, letting him make the choice for himself. The priestess didn't think the temperature of the room rising or lowering by a few degrees was going to have much of a difference on their foul, but if it helped to settle her guardian's mind, than she wasn't going to stop him.

She would try to offer him some of her own calm through the connection they shared. The voices were quiet tonight, as they usually were when Soren was with her, and between the precious basket on the floor and the book on her lap, Nergui was rather content.

The calm flowing from her, combined with the slight pressure was enough to coax him into remaining seated, for the moment. After a long moment he let out a breath in a way that could only be described as a sigh, and actually settled back, closing his eyes for a minute.

"I can't stand the wait," he admitted, and it was good to get the words out in the open. "There isn't anything else to focus on."

And he needed something else to focus on. He needed something to think about other than worrying over his foal's safety, which gave him far too much time to think about how he'd failed in the past. How there had once been another he'd have given his life for, and he hadn't been there for her when it counted. How he'd shirked his duties with Nergui herself while he was avoiding commitment. And here they were, bringing a life into the world, and he didn't have anything else to focus on.

He'd rather just be faced with chasing after the foal as soon as it got it's legs under it, and having to worry about it dashing off the balcony, than dwelling in his own head.

"Do you think it'll be much longer?"

He settled, as much as he was able, and the priestess took the opportunity to knit her fingers between his, drawing his hand up so she could brush her lips along the back of battle rough knuckles. It was ironic to her how very similar they really were. Once upon a time it had been her that had been on edge, a constant state with cacophony of murmurs and whispers that had flooded her mind, and it had been Soren that had quieted them and brought her peace.

Now it seemed their roles had reversed. She could feel his nerves like the strings of a harp pulled taunt and sharp, and did what she could to sooth him.

"Only the Goddess herself can know." It was out of their hands. They would just need to have faith, and that had never been a problem for either of them.

Another kiss to his hand, then the mare was turning, her book set on the cushion beside her, so she could rise up on her knees. Small fingers slid along his shoulder, following the raised line of his collarbone, until she could wrap her arms around him and bump her cheek to his. She could not make their foal come to them faster, but she could, at least, give him something else to focus on while they waited...
