Most Americans Say Birth Control and Divorce Are 'Morally Acceptable,' Gallup Poll Finds

A large majority of Americans consider birth control and divorce "morally acceptable," according to the findings of a Gallup poll released this week.

Gallup noted Wednesday that nearly nine in 10 Americans consider birth control usage to be morally acceptable and about seven in 10 found divorce to be morally acceptable.

The two items were the top rated issues in a list of 19 different subjects that included gambling, the death penalty, pornography, polygamy, gay or lesbian relations, and abortion.

With its 89 percent favorability rating, birth control was the most accepted on the list, being the lone entrant for the "Highly Acceptable" category.

Divorce was the top entrant for the "Largely Acceptable" category at 72 percent. Other issues in that category included sex between an unmarried man and woman (67 percent), having a baby outside of marriage (62 percent), and gay or lesbian relations (60 percent).

Birth control is something I've struggled with because 1. I loathe being pregnant. It is miserable and uncomfortable, and 2. I have 2 kids already and those 2 alone are a handful, and 3. Having a newborn/little baby and being sleep-deprived is stressful & depressing...

We've been seriously trying to avoid getting pregnant for the past 2.5 years.. But darn it, I'm pregnant again mad

I guess if God wants me to have another, He's going to give me one whether I like it or not.

I feel like I can't vent to anyone either, because everyone is excited about it... And sure it's easy for them to be excited.. Because I am the one that has been nauseous for 2 months straight now. And I am the one who has to go through the discomforts of pregnancy.. And I am the one who will have to take care of 3 kids all day alone by myself. crying

I think it goes to show that you can't build a country on inherited faith.

lol. You are lucky. We can't get pregnant, and those times my wife was pregnant she miscarried. Very traumatic, and it is still hard for me to just talk about. Do understand though that kids can be a handful. I used to work at a kindergarten.

Not sure I understand why prevention is a problem. I have never heard anyone give reasons why we should not use birth control.

Do you have any relatives close by you can ask for help? Doesn't seem fair that it should rest on you alone to take care of them all day. Another way of looking at it is that now you can equip them with a sound worldview because there's no one to interfere or object.

Proverbs 22:6
Train up a child in the way he should go,
And when he is old he will not depart from it.

I'm sorry you guys haven't been able to have a child. I know how it feels when you really want to have a baby, because I've been there. But I only know second-hand how much a miscarriage hurts. I hope one day you two can have your own child.

I haven't heard anyone say why we shouldn't use it either. But I'm not sure. I have mixed feelings about it. Not just for moral reasons.. But because hormonal birth control can mess up your natural rhythm.

My mom lives nearby, and she does offer to watch them for me on occasion. But everyone works during the day. So it's just me. I can handle these 2, but I'm afraid I won't be able to handle another lol. I do plan on raising them in the right ways. Honestly, I don't even want them to go to pubic schools because I hate some of the things that they teach.. And I hate that being in school has the potential to expose you to so many things - sex, alcohol, drugs, lgbt people, etc. This new generation of teens/young adults just seems absolutely insane to me.. And it's just going to get worse by the time my kids are that age. Saying it makes me feel like I'm being that crazy over-protective mom, ha! But I don't want to control my kids, I just want them to see those things for what they are, so when they're on their own they will make good choices. They're 2 & 4, though. I'm a little ahead of myself lol
