Taym, being a smoker, was intimately acquainted with all the little exile islands scattered around Ashdown, and none more so than the bench outside of Darlene's, where he generally opted to instead stand with his back against the wall, one foot propped up behind him: a coolguy lean cultivated so early that by now it pretty much entirely lacked affectation and seemed like, you know, just the sort of way he conducted himself.
His first thought for the backpack was--naturally--that it belonged to a child. But the longer he thought about this the less it made sense. Outside Darlene's? On the smoker's bench? He waited for an owner to manifest, and none did.
It looked familiar, in a vague way, and after half a meditative cigarette he reached the conclusion that it quite possibly belonged to the paint-stained twink that ran recreational relief to the Broiler, and, a couple of times, to him directly. Or maybe it didn't. Ashdown was a town rife with types that would carry novelty backpacks well into adulthood, only if he'd ever met the one himself. It remained a mystery through another drag, at which point he decided to figure out whether it had, in fact, been abandoned by a child. He told himself he was looking for ID as he settled down next to it.
There was a certain wild hypocrisy in this, because Taym had, for quite a stretch of time, lived his entire life out of a backpack that had been as vital to him as his own lungs. If someone had availed themselves of its contents if he'd somehow left it anywhere he'd have been devastated, and this one looked about as beat up as his own had been. Then again, he'd always clung to his backpack like a limpet, and clearly this one's owner had been negligent.
With an easy casualness that suggested it was not the first time he'd rifled through an abandoned bag, he pulled open the unzipped sides to take a look inside. It's not like he didn't have a solid excuse.

iloveyouDIE He's got a hat and a jacket pocket full of bottlecaps for Mr. Bitterberry and a wallet and a lighter and cigarettes, go nuts if you want to lol
He startled. He was a man of thin nerves, but also a man of much experience trying to look Cool (tm) and thus his momentary alarm was not accompanied by any kind of unmanly shrieks or anything else compromising.
Very, very gingerly, he leaned back, pulling his hat back down over his ears as if he was afraid it might have leapt off, cartoon-style, in the wake of his start. Eyeing the leash but considering where he was, he leaned back in and cast a glance around to make sure he was alone before asking, conversationally and feeling incredibly stupid: "You're not a person, right? You can't talk or something?"
