Zahid laid back against the cold solid cave wall. Beside him lay Ivette, the mare of his life. Even while sleeping, not a single hair is out of place in Ivette's blond locks. Time had passed and both had aged in different ways. Ivette's hair had volume and had grown long. She had taken care of her hair. It looked like silk threads with a body thick and lush. The weight of her long hair slid to one side of her shoulder and coiled perfectly on the ground. Zahid had grown his hair out too. Only because he thought Ivette liked it that way. His mane he at least kept up part in a loose bun, so as not to slice it off or have it get in the way of battle. His old scars had healed to be less noticeable, and some new ones had appeared, though not many. Ivette cared for his wounds anytime he got one but she preferred to keep him from getting them at all. She always fussed over him. Sometimes Ivette would put nutrients in his hair and brush it. Other stallions might feel like a doll being fussed over, and their stallion hood challenged. Zahid felt. Well. Pretty! He felt like she was helping him look his best for her, and he loved it. She was always caring for him in ways he hadn't thought to. Sometimes this would backfire, as other mares tended to notice his well-kept look. Something about a stallion with a sharp blade and a bun in his hair. Zahid made sure to never pay them any mind. It mattered not. The fact that they looked at her stallion, sealed their unlucky fate. Lucky to have the looks and unlucky that they looked his way with wanting eyes. Zahid tried to return the action of protecting his prize. It always seemed that Ivette didn't need protecting. The minute he tried to stand up to a stallion that might insult her and make rude comments, Ivette already had the stranger on the ground! She was not to be trifled with. Zahid appreciated and loved every part of her. If she had been more of a damsel in distress, surely it wouldn't have ended well with his luck. Ivette is his perfect match in so many ways.
This week, he had taken her to this cave to escape a cold front that swept the lands. The cave he had found once before meeting Ivette, while being chased by bandits. He had managed to anger their boss while gambling one night. They had accused him of being a cheat and the boss wanted his head! Zahid had only been unfortunately lucky at the wrong time. His bad luck had played into even his good luck! So this cave helped him to lose the mobs that chased him. He had almost got lost winding through its corridors. While there, he had found a natural hot spring with milky waters filled with minerals.
So now he had brought Ivette here. As luck would have it, he did find the cave again. However, he had not been prepared. Torchless, he could not find the hot spring tunnel. Lucky unlucky. The story of his life. The cold wall reminded him of such now.
The snow at night could be deadly. He would go to the local market and buy some torches at first light. He would leave Ivette here if she let him.
Had morning come yet? He couldn't tell in this dark hole. His aching back made it feel like hours had passed. He endured a bit longer, so as not to wake his sleeping beauty.
