xxxPERSONALITYxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
INDECISIVE Varus has a way to constantly weigh options, even after making the decision. He'll often regret it if anything goes wrong, or wait for something to go wrong when it was the right choice.
CAUTIOUS Something going terribly wrong is one of the things Varus likes to avoid as much as possible. Pairing up with his indecisiveness to prevent worst possible outcomes, his cautiousness dominates most of his personality.
RECLUSIVE Meeting new friends was never his forte, as his prudent nature passes off as annoying, as what he started believing after his brother said it to him. Varus ends up isolating himself to not bother other people.
PRIVATE Varus was never the type to blurt out everything about it. He looks at his thoughts and history as a confidential matter. During first meetings, he'll share what he thinks is only necessary and keeps it at that. This causes his relationships to be at arm's length.
STUDIOUS Varus turned to books and facts to compensate for the evident lack of his social life. He'd prefer to be stuck in a library or by his bed, surrounded by books, rather than going out. Supporting his decisions with facts give him relief, since it lessens the percentage of anything going wrong when it's been documented and proven already.
INVISIBLE Barely socializing and keeping mostly to himself, Varus tends to end up being invisible to most crowds. He rarely talks, and if he does, it's mostly to himself. Since social interaction is kept to a minimum, he becomes easily unnoticeable. Though it pains him a bit, he thinks this is the best for him.
ORGANIZED The constant need for things to be set right where they're needed is a critical thing for Varus. He needs order as a way to reassure himself of the state of things.

xxxBACKSTORYxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
EARLY CHILDHOOD Varus had a very... withdrawn childhood. His parents decided to live in the middle of nowhere, rather than in a village, which was what Varus preferred. He had a keen interest in books and magic since young; his parents were enthusiastic about it. Being the oldest, Varus was spoiled at a young age--but not with toys, but more books and an occasional artifact from his father. He never liked extravagance, focusing about the simple things that would help him learn.
When his younger brother, Arcturus, was born, Varus was enthusiastic. Probably the most enthusiastic he was with something other than books. He took care of his brother dearly, making sure he fell asleep comfortably or changing his diapers manually. (His parents suggested they do it quickly with magic but Varus rejected the offer.) Having a 3 year gap was fine for the family; the brothers were close with each other despite rarely venturing outside their homes.
When Varus was 9, Arcturus 6, the Heathcliffs went out to Diagon Alley to tour the children. It was a fun experience--Varus ended up buying more books than he can carry. He immediately began to read one while following closely behind his parents. Arcturus was, however, fascinated by other things. He began heading towards Knockturn Alley when the rest of the family was looking at owls. Considering he wasn't paying attention before, he noticed Arc's suspicious movement from the corner of his eye. Distressed at the same time bewildered at his brother's actions of going on his own, he followed discreetly. He wondered why Arc was going straight to Knockturn Alley, which was as dusty and as destitute as Varus remembered. Before Arc could even take 5 steps into the alley, Varus grabbed him from the armpits and carried him back to their parents. When the Heathcliffs were reunited, Arc began crying, saying that Varus had taken him to Knockturn Alley and that the wizards there were scary. Appalled at the preposterous accusation, he defended himself. They were both scolded by their parents for wandering on their own and not even having the thought of telling them about it.
A few days later, Varus woke up in the middle of the night from a dream. It was brought to his attention that Arc wasn't beside him. (He had insisted they share room until Arc was older.) He got up and looked around until he found his brother inside their dad's study, crouched under a light, reading a book. Varus later found out the book was about curses and dark wizards. He told his brother that it wasn't an appropriate book, but Arc just sneered at him and went back to bed as if nothing had happened. The morning after that, Arc mentioned the three unforgivable curses during breakfast. When asked how he knew about it, he pointed at Varus. Once again defending himself and sharing what had really happened, they were both scolded again. Their dad decided to lock his study.
Months passed and Arc continued to put the blame on Varus about anything he'd done, and act innocent afterwards. This strained Varus's relationship with his little brother to the point where he felt like he had to confront him. When asked why Arc blamed him, he only answered, in a really passive voice, "It's fun to see you get so riled up."
A month after his 10th birthday, Varus had dinner with his mother's old friend, who came alongside her family. There was a boy, a couple of year older than Varus, who liked to smoke. Varus asked him about it, and it later became a series of conversations about history(the muggle version, anyway) that he was really glad to have. Before he greeted the guests goodbye alongside his parents, the older boy gave him a cigarette lighter. Varus was reluctant but he accepted it nevertheless since it was his first gift from a friend. He hid the lighter at the bottom of his drawer. When Varus got back to his room for a shower, there was a small fire in the room, and Arc was looking at it with a smile. Varus immediately called for his parents as he pulled Arc downstairs. When their parents came down, holding a lighter, Varus was at a loss for words. He was interrogated thoroughly the next day. However, he knew at once by the breathy laughs his brother whispered under his breath as he was pulled downstairs that it was his doing.
SCHOOL YEARS
■ FIRST YEAR As expected, Varus talked to very few people. Talked--even that was an exaggerated term. He made conversation with another Ravenclaw first year, and maybe an acquaintance with a Hufflepuff girls (but that's questionable since there wasn't any other interaction other than listening to each other answer class questions). He stayed quiet, kept to himself and was not involved to any other thing. Clubs? Nope. Quidditch? Definitely not. The books in the library and common room were enough to keep him occupied for the entire year.
